(SR5) More bits about the new 70-400mm II G lens (and hints about a surprise)
The new 70-400mm will be white like the just announced 500mm lens you see here on top
My (awesome!) sources contacted me to share some more details about the new lens. First I can safely put an SR5 value on that rumor. And this is actually a very new version of the older Sony 70-400mm f/4-5.6 G SSM lens lens. It has following new features:
1) The new II version is weather sealed!
2) It has new coatings.
3) It comes in white like the current super expensive 500mm f/4.0 lens (over $12.000 on BH).
But the changes are deeper than you think. The 70-400mm II G lens will actually be the first lens of a complete new Alpha lens line up! And that includes ONE single surprise I cannot unveil yet because I am still trying to get some more info. But it is a surprise many of you will like. So please stay tuned on SAR. And if you can help me to find out more about the upcoming announcement sent me an email at sonyalpharumors@gmail.com or use the anonymous contact form on the right sidebar.
Thanks!
Reminder (SR = Sonyrumor):
SR1=probably fake rumor
SR2=rumor from unknown sources
SR3=50% chance it is correct
SR4=rumor from known sources
SR5=almost certainly correct!

+ Macro capability
+ Cheap (very unlikely)
PhotoNut
2 years ago |This is all rather underwhelming.
So Sony is going to update a few of its lenses. What about actually releasing new ones?
Where are the affordable FF 35mm or 24mm prime lenses?
Where is the affordable fast 85mm lens?
Where is the affordable 135mm lens?
Where is the affordable FF wide angle zoom?
For NEX where are the affordable fast primes or fixed aperture zooms?

2 years ago |I would hope the surprise lens is a G macro lens 100mm with SSM as an update to the 100mm f/2.8. Or a Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 SSM would be pretty nice.

2 years ago |There are a lot of insane suggestions here, IMHO.
The most likely scenario here would be to base it on the same optical design, so no optical stabilizer.
The Mark Weir quotes points to something very different – something to do with the lens limiting the fps speed. Probably the biggest bottleneck in the current lens design is the mechanical aperture control.
My guess is that new lenses will come with an lightning fast (somehow) electronic aperture control that works with all new cameras. To ensure backwards compatibility, there could still be an aperture lever with “fly-by-wire” control of the aperture.

let’s wait for its final review.

2 years ago |Two guesses for me.
1)Optical Image Stabilization
2)Electronic Aperture Control, so they go beyond 12fps.

2 years ago |I agree with Steve, Sony released just the 100mm 2.8 from Minolta, the macro line needs an update. I dream of a new CZ 100mm 2.0 macro lens…

2 years ago |The macro is fine as it is, I’d rather they released some “normal” lenses.

2 years ago |maybe the big surprise from this lens is fix aperture F/4 for all focal lenght

If I ever get in to shooting cats at ISO6400 in my house I will definitely come back to Sony!

2 years ago |Unnnngh knowing Sony they’d get the design wrong and base it off of the f/3.5-5.6(?) version…
The Beercan is so inexpensive used it doesn’t matter too much about the screw mount : P

2 years ago |instead of making new 70-400, sony should make a sharpp 400mmf5.6
Xmi
2 years ago |That would not make as many users happy as anything else. There are only so many customers that will buy such a lens.

2 years ago |No they shouldn’t. The prime will not sell well compared to the new 70-400mm.
