(SR5) One more “unexpected” NEX to come soon!
I have no specific details yet but I have been told by super trusted sources that a new NEX camera is coming within the next 5-6 weeks. And I don’t mean the long awaited NEX-5F but another one!!! I have been only told that this NEX will be the first of new series. No NEX-3/5/7 but something else! And I have been also told it is neither a Full Frame nor a “professional” camera.
Stay tunes on SAR. I am working to get some more bits about it!
P.S.: Remind you to join the super nice SAR community on Facebook (Click here).

Artichoke
11 months ago |I’m guessing (hoping?) a NEX fixed Zoom w/ APS-C sensor and Zeiss approx 24mm to 100mm equiv., and the OLED EVF like the NEX 7. Everything’s sitting in the NEX 7 body waiting for the fixed zoom to arrive, and with the RX100 they’ve proved they can keep that sized zoom very compact (not pocket-sized, but small). The RX100 is great and this won’t compete with it because of the size difference…, but it will compete with, and beat the pants off the Canon G1X.

but that would be answer to those “you-won’t-have-a-pocketable-cammera-with- ASP-C-sensor” complainers.
Other guess would be NEX<3 as the new F3 is almost equal to 5N so, the place for lower-end has been made.

11 months ago |Really can’t imagine what it can be, since they need lenses, not bodies.
Stevey
11 months ago |It seems Sony is an electronics, not optics, maker. 3 x NEX3s, 2 x NEX5s, 1 x NEX7, and six lenses (seven if you include the Zeiss as a Sony lens). I think they want to keep bodies and lenses at a similar number ?
Lofote
11 months ago |Why do I keep reading Sony makes so many NEX bodies?? They currently make 3 stillcamera NEXs: F3+5N+7 (not counting the primary-film-cameras). You can NOT count a C3 or a 3 or a 5, because they are precessors to the current ones. A 5N is an upgraded 5, nothing else, they didn’t need to do anything from scratch. Thats like you would could Word 2007 and Word 2010 a two word processing programs Microsoft sells. It is just two versions of the SAME program, one is the successor to the other that has features added – they brought it uptodate, nothing more nothing less. The lenses however all have to be calculated INDIVIDUALLY. … And just for the record: other companies are not much faster with lenses, how many years did the mFT companies need to have this lens lineup now!? And you can’t compare it with DSLRs/SLTs because they have been round for many many years, that is the result of many many years!! Also on the NEX not every lens does make sense. A 24-70/F2.8 or a 70-200/F2.8 is just not the right thing for such a tiny body. But you can use such lenses anyway: just use one of the two adapters. Problem solved. So stop complaining about Sonys lens lineup. With the Zeiss 24/F1.8 they even have a high-professional lens of a quality level that is not available with native lenses for mFT or Nikon 1 cameras.
kirk fuk
11 months ago |yuup. Additional lenses would be nice (pancake zoom) but if you are more into phtography rather than collector, lenses that available right now (native +via adpter) is good enough to produce images you want from nex camera
Stevey
11 months ago |You keep reading it because it’s a fact; 6 bodies and 6 lenses. And of those lenses, the 16 is way below average, the 18-55 is good, the 30 is below average, the 50 is excellent, the 55-210 is average, the 18-200 is slightly above average. Little wonder so many ppl here are complaining about Sony planning more bodies, and not more lenses. So really, two or three good lenses and three or four bodies currently available. If you choose to ignore the facts, go look in the mirror and say to yourself, I am a fanboy.
Lofote
11 months ago |Maybe you should look into the mirror and say “I should learn to read”. Have you understood anything? Doesn’t seem so if you still think there are 6 bodies developed from scratch or that ANY company is faster in offering lenses for a new mount. Read my post again and please just TRY to understand before you reply.
Stevey
11 months ago |Unlike you, I don’t think Sony are doing well with developing NEX. Just 2 or three good lenses ? I use an NEX5 with an f-mount adapter because the lens choice is so poor. I don’t own any Sony glass. So the thought of two more bodies (another NEX5 and this mystery NEX) and not two more lenses… well, as you can see from all the comments on this thread, it’s becoming a joke even among ppl here. Too many bodies and not enough lenses. As I said before, if you don’t see this, it’s because you don’t want to.
Kevin Z
11 months ago |Stevey, don’t make bodies won’t help them in making lenses. Just different teams’ job.

11 months ago |Fuji managed to launch the X-Pro with three lenses (two excellent and one good prime) – and they are coming out with more lenses including zooms in under a year. The NEX was launched with a mediocre 16mm pancake lens, a 18-55mm and 18-200mm zooms. Two year later they have a total of 7 lenses. The 50mm is good and CZ 24mm is nice – but it is overpriced compared to the Fuji lenses.
The Samsung NX system, which was launched only about 6 months before the Sony NEX, has about 9 lenses with 4 more on the way.

11 months ago |I agree the bodies are important, but there have been 6 bodies(3, 5, 7, c3, 5n, and F3) in 2 years, and about as many lenses
Seriously though, there have been 10 lenses I think, and two of those are adapters for the 16 mm, two different 18-200 lenses, so if another body is announced before another lens I just might scream
(last original lens, not counting 18-200, was 50 f/1.8 back in December).

For what?
Sony has a small choice of good lenses, and this small choice is run out every time and not available.
That is really poor, i regret my change to the sony nex system.
Sony is not interested in making firmware updates (nex-7) for his customers, is no hearing the wishes of his customers.
To use a sony nex-7 camera is a high priced experience for users with high level patience.

11 months ago |Why do you keep even mentioning the idea of a FF Nex? The E-Mount does not accommodate anything larger than APS-C, and even if Sony somehow managed to squeeze a larger sensor into its opening, the existing lenses would yield heavy vignetting.
From a strategic point of view, Sony positioned the Nex series as a consumer product. Even the excellent Nex7 is a high-end enthusiast camera, not a professional one; the enthusiast market for FF sensors is quite small. APS-C sensors already offer a good-enough quality for most enthusiasts, while allowing for much more compact systems.
obican
11 months ago |E-Mount is exactly the same as Nikon’s F-Mount, and therefore FF capable.
I’m not talking about the two being in the same diameter, They are actually quite identical, apart from the position of the locking pin. You can take a Nikon to NEX adapter and use it as a macro tube on a Nikon body. Or you can take a Nikon rear lens cap and use it on a NEX lens.
Stevey
11 months ago |Identical except for the differences. Sweet logic. Perhaps you mean similar ?
Torsten Bronger
11 months ago |The flange focal distance is 18mm for the NEX and 46.5mm for the F mount. So much for “exactly the same”.
obican
11 months ago |I’m not talking about the flange distance, I’m talking about the mount itself.
Stevey
11 months ago |One of the problems of a short mount to sensor distance is the difficulty in keeping the corners sharp. This would be made far worse by increasing the size of the sensor. If Sony do a ff nex-style cam, it will need a deeper mount to sensor distance than nex/e-mount. For that, Sony already have the a-mount. So maybe they’ll do an nex-style a-mount camera with a 1.3x crop sensor.

so we would have:
- nex1: smallest body, very cheap, NO EVF, NO FLASH
- nex3F : flash
- nex5F : EVF
- nex7 : EVF, Flash
and it would make sence

11 months ago |Every rumor like this one makes me groan in frustration, *IF* the 5f is coming along with yet another body and NO LENSES, arrrrrggghhhhhhh! Its getting to the point where if Canon pulls its collective head out of its arse and does 1080/60p on its cameras I’m going to dump my FS100 and 5n and go back to Canon. There are just too many holes in the Nex lens lineup, no fast zooms and only a few primes, with the 24/1.8 and 50/1.8 being the only good ones, the rest are just average.
Samsung builds a camera few pay any attention to, yet its lens lineup is the envy of any Nex owner – because of the emphasis on fast aperture lenses. If Samsung figures out the noise issue and ramps up video – the NX will be the giant killer.
Currently available:
16/2.4 pancake
18-200/3.5-6.3 OIS
20-50/3.5-5.6
20/2.8 pancake
50-200/4.5-5.6 OIS
60mm/2.8 macro OIS
18-55/3.5-5.6 OIS
85/1.4

11 months ago |So in order words a NEX camera that nobody but soccer moms would care about?
I joke about soccer moms but sometimes all I really need is a compact camera with good sensor and versatile lens — even if it is a NEX or RX100 type.
I just returned from a vacation where I took my older A700 camera and Sony DT18-200mm and I was so unimpressed with many of the pictures with that lens and sensor combination. I carry this heavy gear and yet on sunny days and at f/8 and high shutter speed, very few of the pictures are sharp and there was a lot of problems with the camera overexposing up to 1 1/2 stops in some cases when shooting scenes with white objects (boats and stuff) in them. The exact opposite of what I would expect. I was really bothered by the lack of dynamic range to handle the average sunny background and these bright white objects. Lightroom was unable to fix some of the pictures because of the brightness in the scene and objects. I really should have taken a circular polarizer.
In any case, I think I would have done better if I had brought one of the new super zoom bridge cameras that have come out instead of my heavy DSLR kit.
emopunk
11 months ago |I think you would do better investing in photographic knowledge. You can’t blame A700 for poor results, honestly.
PhotoNut
11 months ago |Hey, I’m not saying that A700 is to blame for crappy user skills. Until I upgraded to A850, I used the A700 and captured a lot of great photographs. What I had not used the A700 for until now though was for the usual travel photography. Basically snapshots. In this scenario when shooting during daylight at f/8, ISO 100, the advantage of a large kit was really not there as the latest bridge cameras have pretty good sensors and most importantly support video and have long zoom ranges.
The overexposure problem was either caused by incorrect logic by the matrix metering algorithm or maybe the aperture was slow in some circumstances. There was no reason why the camera would in aperture priority mode (f/8,ISO 100,high shutter speed) would take RAW pictures where the histgrams would begin at the half way mark. It would then require 1 1/2 stops pull down of exposure and moving the black point right by up to fifteen points to fix the image in Lightroom. That is not user error and I don’t see why I should be forced to use manual exposure for such simple snapshot photographs.
Anyway, the lens too was not sharp at all in the center or anywhere even though I stopped down to f/8, used high shutter speed and held the camera steady. It was also much less sharp that my previous experience with it. So clearly the bad results can’t be chalked up to user error. Maybe the lens is out of alignment or something. I will need to do some test of shooting far-off static objects using tripod to verify absolute sharpness.
frank
11 months ago |Your first mistake was to think that the 18-200mm would give you sharp results, your second mistake was not knowing how to use the metering on a dSLR, my A700 never exhibits the problems you had.
You’d probably be better off with a super-zoom.
The Lotus Eater
11 months ago |A photo-nut that doesn’t know how to take photos? You couldn’t make this up.
Really, the metering in the A700 is almost fool proof. Well, almost.
Tanglefoot
11 months ago |The 18-200 is know to not be the best of lenses & the rest of the complaints I would be inclined to put down to lack of user ability if you think a bridge camera would get better results in those situations. Comparable maybe, better only if auto will make better decisions on the settings than the user……
PhotoNut
11 months ago |Again, this was not a case of user error. My suggestion that perhaps a bridge camera might have been better for my vacation was based not on absolute image quality but on the following:
1. Size/weight . The bridge camera does not need multiple large lenses for telephoto & wide angles. I could have carried just one small camera with me the whole time instead of needing to carry a lowepro slingshot for the DSLR and lenses and another large lens case for the 135-400mm.
2. Live-view . The bridge camera supports live view which lets me shoot and compose while holding the camera above my head to avoid folks blocking my view. A700 has no live view.
3. Video. This was a biggie for me. I couldn’t shoot any video when video sometimes was the only way to really capture some of the vacation experiences and moments. The A700 cannot not capture video.
4. Lens reach. The latest bridge cameras have up to 30x (or more) zoom while still retaining reasonable quality. Since I was shooting on bright sunny days and stopped down anyway, there was no advantage to the SONY 18-200mm and Sigma 135-400mm APO lenses that I brought with me. The latest super zoom bridge cameras have an equivalent lens reach (compared to 35mm) of up to 600mm and they also have in-lens optical stabilization as well which was very important when trying to compose the picture on a moving boat and trying to photograph distance marine mammals at the same time.
In short, all I was saying is that normally I look down at the consumer cameras like NEX and bridge as “soccer mom” cameras but that in my last experience, I may actually have been better off with a bridge camera than a DSLR for the situation I found myself in, wanting small size and long reach + video/live-view.

11 months ago |Sony should have just labeled the RX100 a NEX-1 because it is that good and expensive according to the reviews I have read.
Also, what is the deal with the numbering scheme in NEX. Sometimes the number is followed by a letter unless it’s backward. Is that a translation into English deal ?
So 3/5/7 aren’t enough. We will get a 4 or 6 with the obligatory 18-55.
Rooru S.
11 months ago |Nah, the RX100 stands well over other NEX-series cameras in control (and menu) layout and customization, and we have to remember that NEX-series are for E-mount cameras, not fixed lens. So RX100 maybe it’s the first of a series of new high end cameras and hopefully, we will see a F828 successor in a few years.
And we will never see a NEX-4…the 4 is not used by the Japanese.
