(SR5) Sony DT 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6 to be announced in a couple of hours.

Not really a big deal but I have been told that Sony will officially announce the new DT 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6 lens within the next couple of hours. I asked my soruces if there would be “something else” and the answer was “no”. Anyway, don’t get sad. One month from now we will have ton of new cameras and lenses.
P.S.: RX100 beats Canon EOS-M for now at Amazon ranks

11 months ago |Just a wild guess but this lens will sell 1000x more than a CZ 50mm ?

Much too slow. Seems like a glorified kit lens.

11 months ago |Yes, but it will be a very good lens, I suspect–for a good price.

Steve
11 months ago |It’s a DT lenses and it works on every current DSLR that Sony makes.
Let’s hope us few full-frame shooters soon see something for our a850/a900 and the soon to be announced a??
Mike
11 months ago |That’s not difficult to achieve since Sony is currently not offering any DSLR. All current models are SLTs.
Spoon
11 months ago |Be sure to inform Sony, since they call them DSLR’s still (with SLT as subcategory).
Steve
11 months ago |Spoon,
Thank You!

11 months ago |I wonder if it’s worthwhile to make a DT lens up to 400mm or 500mm.

11 months ago |I hope we’ll get some e-mount announcements as well the coming days. I’ve been waiting buying new e-mount lenses to see if the Canon mirrorless would be worthwhile considering, but since we now know it isn’t, I’m hoping for some new cool nex lenses!

11 months ago |Looks like Sony is killing time to the major announcement by bringing out some upgrades to their cheaper models… all these new lenses have SAM instead of SSM and obviously are not for the FF cameras (whenever they arrive!!!)…
I guess these lenses are geared towards the a37/a57 shooter.
Roll on August!!!
soulfly
11 months ago |the recent SAM (ie: 18-135mm)seems to be better than the older ones.

11 months ago |How much redundancy do we need in this range/pricepoint/format? Enough already, show us some good stuff!
Matt
11 months ago |Considering the only ‘cheap’ option in this range is the extremely aged 75-300mm it is great to see Sony updating their lenses. More ‘exotic’ lenses will be released alongside more exotic cameras. I’m just glad Sony are updating quite a lot of their lenses lately.
Just some alpha user
11 months ago |At least the 75-300 is a FF lens, not that I’m complaining about this lens like many of them here.
Matt
11 months ago |Sony, like all camera makers, group their product announcements within their catagory. They launch this now rather than with their high end stuff, which will be announced alongside ther matching high end bodies. They will announce full frame lenses alongside full frame cameras, higher end E-Mount lenses alongside higher end E-Mount cameras. It isn’t really hard to understand – look at the F3 launched along with the ‘new’ super zoom, or the a37 alongside the 18-135mm. So even though they need to launch this lens they aren’t going to launch it with the a99 now are they? Get this minor announcement out before the bigger pro/semi-pro announcement in a few weeks.

11 months ago |this is an huge update for the previous 70-300 lens. I thought i heard somewhere that the new Sony SAM lens is using an updated motor that is much more silent compared to the old SAM. And a new sony lens casing standard is also much welcomed. The 16-50. 18-135 and this 55-300 lens build is much more solid. I realy2 hate the old build quality of sony lens.
Steve
11 months ago |The old 70-300 is a full-frame type lens that also works for APS-C sensors so it not really a replacement for the 70-300.
kevin
11 months ago |Not just is the new SAM motor quieter (not just in the 55-300, but also in the 18-135), but it allows full-time manual focus input as well, unlike previous SAM lenses which can be ruined if manual focus in attempted while the lens is still switched to AF.

11 months ago |I have never seen a Sony 75-300mm used on a FF camera and seriously its a crime to use a mediocre lens on something like a FF camera. A Tamron 70-300mm USD is a minimum of what is needed for a high res FF sensor.
butch
11 months ago |that lens if better then the tamron USD might be on my buy list as me tamron 70-200 2.8 is a bit to lug around soletimes
deviantdevil
11 months ago |IMO… A waste of production time and production resources, even if it is only as simple as a re-branding of a Tamron or whomever lens.

11 months ago |I havr tried the new DT 18-135 and it perform very well
it’s worth to wait , so i guess this 55300 would also perform well
Happy to hear that sony is keep providing new lens for A mount
i would like to stay in A mount

Nik Page
11 months ago |LAME!
daniel
11 months ago |Zooms like the 24-105 f/4 and 12-24 f/4 would be very nice.
Something similar to the 17-40 f/4 or 24-85 f/4 would be great. How about an 18-300mm DT like that new one from Nikon. As many have stated before, that 70-200 f/4 should make its way here as well. Something like Sigma’s 50-150 f/2.8 for DT shooters? Heck yes!
Sony 828
11 months ago |Nikon 18-300 is pricey and heavy lens which is not good enough when compared to cheap and light Tamron 18-270. Check out the test in SLRgear. Even the close up focusing is worse.
daniel
11 months ago |True, I forgot about the Tamron zoom. Isn’t Tamron planning to release a revised 70-200 f/2.8 soon, similar to their 70-300 USD? Most of us cannot afford G series prices anymore.
Sony 828
11 months ago |Excellent! Sony is showing support for DT system. I have been waiting for this. There is no sense to buy big FF xx-300 lens for APS-C camera when smaller and lighter one will do the trick. And I must say 300 mm with APS-C is long enough for most of us normal humans working without tripod.
And some say it is not bright enough – neither are any other similar solutions. If sony made DT prime 400 mm F4 that would be an excellent lens also.
MatthewM
11 months ago |Sony 828, I’d never consider a long prime, I always think whatever you want to capture will just be either too far away or too close to perfectly match whatever your focal length is…

11 months ago |The 75-300 is probably the weakest lens in Sony’s lineup, so a new 55-300DT paired with the 70-300G seems like a more sensible way to cover that range.
AG
11 months ago |They needed an update to the non-G series 55-200 and 75-300 since the AF motors were quite old. I noticed this has a metal mount and that is better than the competition.
Does the front element rotate?
Any reviews on the 18-135mm since it is in stock now ?
butch
11 months ago |jsut looked at my old lens and saw it was a 55mm filter and this new one is a 62mm. now i knwo its not jsut that easy but this lens is DT and the old one is FF but why then is it not any brighter? im not thinking it should be an F4 or something but shouldnt it be brighter then the old one

9 months ago |The Sony DT 55-300 lens was published as being released mid September on the majority of websites dated July, however most of these postings have no update since July 2012, how come no website has any news re reviews or availability to the uk market?
