In an interview i did see, the reporter asked:
“Why does this work?”
And the answer was:
“I don’t know, and I don’t care, I’m fully occupied with finding more applications for this. I don’t care why it works!”

12 months ago |It sure is, but if it does, like SSS and FF, which was impossible before it was done, then there is no use in arguing how they did it, just enjoy and use it.
Same with on-sensor PDAF , if it is done, then I don’t care how. But let’s speculate:
“Hi Mr Nikon, I’m Mr Sony, we can offer you a 36 MP sensor, if you let us use your PDAF technology from the “1″, and, of course, you need to use or new memorycard in your camera.”

12 months ago |I hope this A88/A99 won’t be intentionally crippled like the A77 was. They would be very stupid to put 12+ fps and 102 all-cross AF points for excellent action tracking and then putting just a tiny buffer. Also, I hope they don’t limit the ISO in the video mode, and other features that might be intentionally crippled. Why, Sony, why? For protecting your camcorders line and/or a future higher FF model? Don’t be stupid Sony! Who are you fighting against, Canon/Nikon or yourself?

12 months ago |People just don’t realise the importance.
A fundamental technical different between NEX and Alpha SLT is the existence of that mirror.
If the PDAF is done on the sensor, they don’t need the mirror. And you get the best of both world, fast AF , good tracking, AF with video, with fast fps( even on lower models) and no worries about mis-aligned PDAF sensor.

12 months ago |It would be nice to see Sony one up the already impressive EVF. I also hope they have a menu choice that allows the EVF to remain on. There are some instances when that small lag costs you a quick shot. Most of the time not a big deal. I know the EVF gets very digital looking with image lag in very low light conditions and I prefer the OVF in really bright conditions. If they fix that I don’t know if I ever would want an OVF again.

12 months ago |Nex 7 gives me EVF overheating warnings all the time. Not camera overheat from shooting long vid… I’m talking EVF overheat. Oddly occurs without notice. Just shuts down and forces me to use rear screen. Then a second later it starts up again like nothing happened.
Sometimes surprisingly happens when I haven’t even taken a shot. Figured out that walking with camera on shoulder strap, the EVF sensor turns on and burns just from being carried. Go to shoot first photo and EVF overheat warning shuts it down just as shutter release is pressed. Turn cam off/on and everything is fine… except that I missed my shot. And I have missed a few because of this.
Now I just leave camera off until ready to shoot.

12 months ago |It would be nice if the buffer was large enough to handle the impressive fps in full resolution raw. Would it be undoable to write or not advantageous to write simultaneously to the dual cards? 1-12 shots to card 1 and 13-24 to card 2. Just spit balling.

12 months ago |I was always having a laugh at the pop up flashes.
Then one day I have been forced to take a few shot of a famous Moto GP champion, using the built in flash.
That happened because we already had ended the main photo shoot and loaded and shipped back all the heavy duty lighting gear.
The resulting images were kind of acceptable, yet they were used for an Ad campaign and generated 5 figures in royalties.
I promise you, that I always carry a body with a built in flash when we do a photo shoot.

12 months ago |One does not keep all the shots. In a 2 second burst you will find a couple that are the great shots the keepers. The others get tossed. The keepers are the ones that get edited if needed. You don’t keep every picture you take do you?

12 months ago |As a retoucher at an event photography studio, it is still a bitch to go through 5,000+ image catalogs, 15 images per pose just because photographer was too lazy to focus spot on the first time. thats zooming in to EACH shot, loading each 36 megapixel frame, to make sure its sharp, to see which one is sharpest, its idiotic. No need to shoot more than 5.

12 months ago |DJ,
You are definitely right. I for sure cannot see using a high fps for poses. I was thinking along the lines of the occasional diving catch in baseball or football. A great stop on a break away in hockey or score. Not using it for every shot. But up until now I don’t seem to get more than about 5 or 6 fps for no more than 1 second despite the advertised 10 fps.
Clyde
12 months ago |I don’t understand why event photos need 36mpxl. Those jobs are well served by 3 to 10mpxl cameras. At least that’s what I send my togs out with. Never a complaint even from 20×30″ print orders. Super fast editing time. Time is money.
Save the high MP for artwork and advertising.

12 months ago |I remember shooting sports for college papers… and then a news tog for nearly a decade after that covering pro sports. We shot film back then, and all the editors encouraged us to shoot single frame on sports. We learned to capture peak action. Made editing for fast deadlines a breeze.

12 months ago |ok, so here is my wish list: ( for a cam I would never buy
)
- generally , more user choices, user settings for: ( to close all discussion of being almost there …)
– Auto ISO limits …
– Lo – HI speed burst modes with settable speed from 2fps,
every half fps to max, so you can have Lo at 4.5 and hi
at 5.5 if you want that.
– More custom memory settings, store them in memory (or on the card)
and allow for them to have names, then you can pick and choose
in menues easily. And if they are on the memory card,
we can share them.
Sony could provide the traditional Nightscene, Portrait, Action
etc as downloads from their website.
– Expose more parameters of the AF system to the user,
like the high end N&C.
- The traditional PASM should be complemeted with an Auto ISO mode.
- Get flash right! With 1200 zone metering and ADI,
there should be no need for preflash.
- Allow for smaller raw than full resolution.
- ( I would have loved to see a square 36×36 mm sensor … ,
and removing the need for a vertical grip)
- Small stuff like, allow for battery to be charged in-camera.
- Tether, just to close the discussion …
(Good hdmi-out would go along way)
Basically just small stuff to take away issues.

12 months ago |I just want to know that will the 24M sensor use in A99 will have better dynamic range and high ISO performance than the 32M sensor used in D800?
Dulaney Ward
12 months ago |Of course, we don’t know for certain yet. But, given that Sony’s sensor technology has been making great progress on both fronts in the last four years, it is quite reasonable to surmise that the answer to your question will prove to be yes.

Seems decent spec wise if those are to be what it is, not getting my blood going though.
I’m more curious about:
-Who Sony is intending to sell this camera too
-How those clients are going to react to it
Specs, especially rumored ones, don’t get me excited these days. What is important is how the camera performs its functions on a day to day basis. The only way to know that is to use the camera for an extended period of time.
I’ll keep an entertained eye on what goes on with it though.
