(SR5) Sony to announce new compact camera soon (no new NEX or SLT camera).
Sony will soon announce a bunch of new compact cameras. There will be no new NEX or SLT cameras (or lenses). A leak at Sony unveiled that a new W610 and W630 are going to be introduced.
The compact camera market is still the biggest camera market in terms of unit sales but the profit margin is very low (Click here to see the Amazon photo camera ranking). Plus this market is going to shrink because of the phone cameras that do bring two advantages: When you have a phone that can take pictures why bother to bring a second camera with you? And the second more important reason is the APP world. It’s nice to know that you can upgrade your photo-creativity by using new tools like Hipstamatic. There is where Sony has to work. Create an APP friendly network for NEX and SLT cameras. Hope they will do that!

2 years ago |Well.. it’s a pitty that Sony produces worst cameras than before. W 510, 520 were piece of.. cr..p. In similar price there were Canon A2200, Panasonic FS16 and others with better build and picture quality, sometimes even with optical IS and often with HD movie. Sony didn’t learn its lesson. W610 has the same terrible objective like W510.. still no HD movie, .. So W610 is almost the same like W510 only with different, also cheap plastic body. In the same price Panasonic, Nikon, Canon look much better in any aspect! I’am Sony fan but to be honest the company is destroying its reputation.

TBH sony’s midrange arsenal is probably the best out there. Zeiss lens, mostly 920k dots and the best build quality of the pocket cam. Especially when there’s nothing out there with canon brand support 920k dots. Not even the mildly upgraded S100 or even g12.
I just hope they announce a super compact, S100-like, 1/1.6 sensor and F/2 or better aperture. That’s the only thing they don’t have right now.

Sony.ca is out of stock on almost everything.

2 years ago |I agree. Sony needs to get their priorities straight. They need to respond to current market demands. Right now the NEX-7/A77 are the king on the block in many respects to many Canon and Nikon cameras. It won’t hold that position for long if there are no cameras for consumers to buy!

2 years ago |As much as I’d like to agree, I think the teams responsible for these compacts and the people responsible for the a77 or NEX-7 are very different groups of people. They might as well be from different companies. It’s not like designing and manufacturing these compacts has had ANY impact on the a77 or NEX lineup.

2 years ago |The Cybershot managers are also the managers of Alpha and NEX. Sony moved it all together in the same building and then put the Cybershot managers in the top positions. That was some time ago now. It’s all one company.
And that’s why the three lines continue to converge more and more, and toward the ideas of Cybershot managers.

2 years ago |Well I’m not expetcing that Sony will release a superb camera for a 100 bucks, but if competitors have in their cheap cameras HD, Sony also should have it, the same is with other parameters. Yesterday I saw a guy with a H1.. what a camera.. impressive build quality not a mention picture quality..
