(SR5) This will make you happy: A57, A65, A77 and A99 firmware update coming soon!

It’s always a pleasure when I have good news to share on SAR! That time top sources told me that Sony will announce a new A57, A65, A77 and A99 firmware update next week! The update will be available for download in early February!
I have no details yet about the specific improvements but I may receive them very soon: Stay tuned on SAR and spread the good news!
UPDATE: One new A99 is for sale for $2499 at Cameraland (Click here). That’s the lowest price ever seen. To get notified when there will be more A99 cameras at that price or lower login and save this search on Slidoo.

5 months ago |So, should I feel annoyed that they’ve never released a firmware update for the A580 or be pleased they got it right from the very beginning?
Le Star
5 months ago |+1 for an update for the A580. Great as Sony’s camera’s are, I feel Sony abandons models too quickly (and it’s not just their cameras!).
Doubt that Sony will listen to us though. They already have our $$$.
Lofote
5 months ago |Is there anything faulty in the A580? I know of no faults, so this is a good thing. People often see firmware updates as a good thing. I see it as a thing of “it wasn’t finished”, although of course I love it, if new features are added, that were not planned in the beginning.
Howie
5 months ago |Firmware updates aren’t always about fixing faults – they’re also released to improve functionality. Right now the A580 is the last true DSLR that Sony ever released and I feel it’s a shame that it never seemed to get the attention it deserved.
Scooby Doo
5 months ago |I would love to see them finally tackle that fairly silly impediment on RAW + JPG settings. Specifically if you shoot RAW and wish to use some of the funky software based tricks (HDR, multi frame noise redux, etc) these options are disabled if you have RAW set.
You should simply be able to define a behaviour that says “if I choose one of these options, please generate a JPG and don’t lock me out of the function – disable RAW shooting temporarily for this purpose”. It would be so simple, and yet we are forced to go into Image settings and turn off RAW.
Howie

jrobato
5 months ago |You are very right on this one. They should allow the body to temporarily switch to JPEG automatically when using these functions then automatically back to RAW when you switch out of them. It is really disrupting to switch from RAW to JPEG to use them then switch back to RAW.
oVan
5 months ago |They will never do that, because for most users the outcome is not predictable: you adjust some picture effect setting and suddenly the raw files you really want are not there. Now it’s simple: whenever you try to enable one of those settings, you just can’t.
shamb
5 months ago |I think he means it should gofrom RAW mode to RAW+JPEG and applies the effect to the JPEG only. If you are already in RAW+JPEG, it applies the effect to the JPEG.
You wouldnt lose any information, just maybe fill the SD card a little quicker…. but the user should know that anyway.
WTH

How dare you suggest something so logical… to Sony.
SJ
5 months ago |RAW+JPG isn’t handled consistently and predictably in its current form on my A57.
If I’m shooting RAW and set the camera to certain JPG only modes, like Panorama or Handheld Twilight, my A57 will automatically take a JPG image. It’ll then return to taking RAW automatically when I switch to a RAW compatible mode. There’s no message informing me that this will happen when switching to those modes.
To me it’d make sense to have other settings (like HDR) automatically switch it to JPG too. Of course this could be made a menu option that people could disable if they wanted.
a900andanex5
5 months ago |It already does exactly that for the sweep panorama – you can still shoot them in RAW mode and it just produces a jpeg.
It just seems lacking and inconsistent that it doesn’t do the same for HDR etc
Not holding my breath
5 months ago |+100 Scooby Doo
Better still allow us the Jpeg facilities when using RAW as you so well explained… AND give us a proper Jpeg engine so we can choose whichever we want.
I must admit, I am bursting to get a 500mm lens for my A65 but have been waiting for this update to arrive. If it doesn’t include an improved Jpeg engine, (which Sony know full well needs improving), some kind of better noise reduction/picture quality, or at least implement Scoobies suggestion, then I will know that Sony really don’t give a damn about picture quality and the needs of their customers and will not buy the lens. I will continue with what I have and eventually sell and buy another make of camera knowing that whatever their problems, they at least care about picture quality and the needs of their customers. (please don’t anyone tell me to shoot raw, I’ve heard all that before and given my reasons why I, and many others, need a good Jpeg engine).

5 months ago |Please Sony, don’t make a joke by just updating lens profiles!
Lofote
5 months ago |Why is a lens profile update a joke? Those people who have those lenses and what to use the lens specific JPG-functions (CA etc. correction) are happy about it. It is not a joke just because it doesn’t contain anything useful for YOU…
Ray
5 months ago |It’s not that lens updates aren’t needed, but that there are more important things that need to be addressed. Therefore, it would be a cruel joke to only provide lens updates.
Speaking of lens updates: I’d like to see a few profiles for third party lenses, but I suppose that’s asking a little too much.
WTH
5 months ago |They should just update the Firmware Number…
DenGen
5 months ago |Not excited. The fact that they are updating the SLT’s might impose that the NEXes will also be updated, which would then affect me (I have the NEX7).
But the last firmware updates for A77 and NEX7 (http://www.sonyalpharumors.com/halleluya-sony-a77-and-nex-7-firmware-are-now-here/) were so ridiculous (< 2 hours of work for a skilled programmer + lens profiles) that it made me think that Sony apparently doesn't even pay a single programmer to update the existing cameras.
Seriously, when they added the ability to switch off the movie button in the last update (that's about 2 lines of code), they could have spent 5 minutes more on it to make it a little smarter (hold movie button and then press shutter to start recording movie, for example), which would have made it interesting for me.
Here's what we will get, if we're lucky:
- lens profiles for lenses A, B and C.
- capability to turn on and off release shutter
A major firmware update would really surprise me, but I'd like to be wrong.

5 months ago |1) yes
2) I don’t believe the faster review function was any trouble to program (at least in the NEX7). The newly implemented fast preview shows an unprocessed image (similar to the output on the viewfinder during liveview), which is later replaced by the processed image, where lens profiles have been applied. I would bet that this processed image shows up after the exact same time at which the old review image showed up. Hence, all that was added was a call like “display.show(liveViewImage(sensoroutput))”. (This is of course pseudo-code.) All the applied functions should have existed before.
3) I haven’t notice any improvements in response speed (though I don’t see any such problems in the NEX7).
4) If your start googling for possible firmware improvements for the NEX7, you’ll find a ton. Also, anyone using the camera for a year could come up with dozens of possible improvements, most of which could be fixed easily. Looking at the total number of fixes in the last firmware update and the amount of thought put into these fixes, there is simply no way that anyone has spent more than a week thinking about and programming this firmware update.

5 months ago |The one tweak I’d love to see on my A57 is the ability to customise the digital zoom button, like you can on the A65.
As I shoot in RAW, digital zoom is completely useless to me, and the customisable AEL and ISO buttons already perform functions that I regularly use.
Not that I’m hopeful about Sony changing this. I suspect that if they were ever going to add this feature they would have done so already.

5 months ago |Well, I am not satisfied with the indoor sports performance of this camera at events where flash photography is prohibited. I have tried everything I know possible to reduce the noise. Increasing the ISO above 800 just turns makes their hair into lego figures.
Michele
5 months ago |Well, I’ve been using this camera for something like 3 weeks and I’ve tried up to ISO 6400 and I’ve never seen any “Lego” effects using both RAW and JPG. Sure, noise comes in at 6400 but 3200 is perfectly usable (I would dare to say also at 6400 and above up to 10000ish….). Of course everything’s relative to what you’re gonna do with your pics but I can’t complain about the performances of the A99.

If you use the A77 fully updated and then the A99, the A99 seems slow and sluggish. 5 months ago |I know for Sony the age old NEX-3 is a stone age stuff, the ting from the past. But how much I wish if they could provide an update which allows to set more 0.7EV steps for bracketed shots. NEX-6 already has this feature.
.
I know Sony is never going to provide any updated for the original NEX-3 and NEX-5 but since I don’t have to pay any tax for dreaming, I am putting across my wish
Now two serious things:
1. NEX systems available in India are still NEX-3 and NEX-5 (no NEX-C3, NEX-5N, NEX-F3 …). NEX-7 was released on Nov 2012. So we are pretty much still tied up with the older NEX systems.
2. The buyers of NEX-3 and NEX-5 were the guys/gals who showed up courage to buy a new unproven system from Sony. They should at least acknowledge that fact and provide us some updates like the one mentioned above.

5 months ago |Now as much as I’d hoped for something meaningful, somehow I kinda feel it’s gonna be just the silly lens profiles. I’m not saying those are useless, they’re just useless for everyone else but the owners of the particular lenses. I would’ve enjoyed profiles for 80-200/2.8 and 300/2.8, BUT I kinda doubt there’s ever gonna be support for minolta or third party lenses. Man I hope I’m not being a bad prophet..
On the other hand, not to brag or anything, but the bare fact, that there are THAT many comments and wishlists kinda give a hint to Sony – dudes, you released a market immature product and you should fix it no matter what. I know you’re tempted to cripple it even more, so you can force people to buy the a99 and the next camera you’re gonna release in the next X months, but that’s not really cool in the eyes who give their money so you can make profit, i.e. us. So bottom line is: Sony don’t give a damn about their products, their serviceability and the opinion of their market target. All they care is to release the next body (probably immaturely too) and get it sold out as much as possible..
And I’d like to add my wishlist for the a77 in particular:
– better jpeg engine (don’t really care – I shoot in RAW anyways, just the straight-out-of-the-camera jpegs I use to browse and decide what I’ll develop further could’ve looked better)
– remove the silly additional video crop (most likely ain’t gonna see that one coming true either, since I bet either the processor is not powerful enough to handle all the inbound data, or they use the spare pixels for additional digital in-sensor stabilization)
– make it more responsive – it still takes some time to accept your settings. It’s not how it used to be when a77 launched, but still – it’s already a good year into service – that should’ve been taken care of looooong ago.
– tethering – dunno why sony don’t want to implement it in a77. I really have no idea…
– and since today my favorite: the SIMPLEST of all features: add an option to disable the auto EVF-switch-off. I was today in this bird sanctuary (using the opportunity my visit in India gave me) and I made abt 1800 shots (which is pretty much nothing for my standards whenever I go on a wildlife shoot). I missed abt 60% of THE Shots (with capital “S”) just cause by the time I put the viewfinder to my eye and it powers up, I’ve totally lost the bird I was tracking. And with a lens like 300/2.8 with a 1.4x TC it’s REALLY hard to scope out and find the bird again on time for THE Shot.
And I know that’d drain the battery quicker, which is totally fine with me. After all this is an option that just wildlifers and sport photographers will really use, because those are the two biggest targets for that type of photography where you’ve got to be ready in the Right moment. Having said that I kinda doubt somebody has invested n a 70-200 or 300/2.8 or even 500/4, will ever be that cheap to not buy a VG or at least a bunch of additional batteries. Therefore it should be an easy task to disable the EVF-auto-off when all they would have to do is duplicate the outbound on both channels (EVF + screen). Of course that might lead to overheating issues, but it’s worth the try to wish for it.
@Andrea: I sincerely hope someone from Sony DOES read those lines, because that’s the real customer feedback. That’s what their customers want in their sony products and once again – if Sony gave a darn about us as community, they would’ve listened up and started implementing those features long ago.
Cheers,
vlex
