You will love this: Three new E-mount lenses from Sigma!
Guys! You are going to love this news! As I anticpiated last week the current 30mm and 19mm f/2.8 primes have been updated. And there is a new 60mm f/2.8 E-mount too. Click on the pictures on top to see a larger view of the new lenses. And here is the official Sigma press release:
Important note: Sorry guys, the 30mm f/1.4 lens announced by Sigma today is NOT coming for A-mount. The first official press release contained an error. Again, this was an OFFICIAL press text containing the error and not SAR.
YOKOHAMA, Japan — Jan. 29, 2013 — Sigma Corporation of America a leading researcher, developer, manufacturer and service provider of some of the world’s most impressive lines of lenses, cameras and flashes, today announced the release of four new lenses for the ART product line, including three lenses for mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras and one lens for DSLR cameras with APS-C size sensors. This announcement comes at the start of the CP+ Camera and Photo Imaging Show 2013 this week in Yokohama, Japan.
The new and updated Sigma lenses include the 30mm F1.4 DC HSM, which will be available in Sigma, Canon and Nikon mounts, and the 30mm F2.8 DN, 19mm F2.8 DN and 60mm F2.8 DN lenses, which are available for both Micro Four Thirds and Sony E-Mount camera systems. Pricing and availability on all of these lenses has yet to be announced.
The 60mm F2.8 DN lens is entirely new to the Sigma lineup, while the 30mm F1.4 DC HSM and the 30mm F2.8 DN and 19mm F2.8 DN lenses are existing focal lengths that have been redesigned with enhanced optical performance and included as part of Sigma’s new Global Visioncategory restructuring. All three DN lenses incorporate telecentric optical designs and a linear, auto focusing motor that ensures accurate and quiet focusing for video recording. They also boast metal exteriors and a simply shaped focus ring, with varying textures to distinguish each part of the lens. In addition, DN users can choose between a black or silver finish to match their favorite equipment.
“We’re really proud of the super sharp lenses we’ve produced in the past year and these new Art lenses will continue to impress our fans and critics alike. They’re ideal for the landscape, portrait, still-life, close-up and casual photographer who values creative, dramatic outcomes above compactness and multifunction,” said Mark Amir-Hamzeh, president of Sigma Corporation of America. “The lenses are entirely made in Japan and they boast the new product line’s sleek design and enhanced quality control. We’re quite proud of these changes – and additions – to our lens lineup; they’re further evidence of Sigma’s forethought in this fast-moving industry.”Here are more details on these new lenses from Sigma:
- 60mm F2.8 DN – Featuring the natural perspective of mid-range telephoto lenses, together with a shallow depth of field, this lens allows the photographer to capture a single part of a subject with great bokeh effects. It has an angle of view equivalent to 120mm on the Micro Four Thirds system and 90mm on the E-mount system (35mm equivalent focal length). The minimum focusing distance is 19.7 inches; the maximum magnification is 1:7.2. This lens also contains Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass, which helps minimize axial and transverse chromatic aberration.
- Sigma 19mm F2.8 DN – This high-performance, wide-angle telephoto lens has an angle of view equivalent to 38mm on the Micro Four Thirds system and 28.5mm on the E-mount system (35mm equivalent focal length). As a wide-angle lens with excellent mobility, it is ideal for studio photography, architecture and starry skies. Its minimum focusing distance is 7.9 inches and its maximum magnification is 1:7.4.
- Sigma 30mm F2.8 DN – This high-performance, standard telephoto lens has an angle of view equivalent to 60mm on the Micro Four Thirds system and 45mm on the E-mount system (35mm equivalent focal length). This lens, which is perfect for casual and formal portraiture, documentary photography, travelogues and everyday shooting, includes a double-sided aspherical lens that enhances its optical performance. Its minimum focusing distance of 11.8 inches and its maximum magnification is 1:8.1.

4 months ago |too bad. Would have been the most interesting lens for E-Mount in this lineup, by far.
Sean Lancaster
4 months ago |Yeah, 30/1.4 would be very nice for Emount.
Sigh.

4 months ago |Too bad no bright primes for native NEX mount…Sure seems there’s an untapped market there. (But I suppose my Voigt 35/1.4 and my Mitakon 35/0.95 will stay in my bag for a while to come.) But still, happy to see Sigma staying in the NEX mount market!

4 months ago |Nice!!! I will be all over the 30/1.4…
So a set of SEL24/1.8, SIG30/1.4, SEL35/1.8OSS, SIG60/2.8 and SEL85/1.8 is not a bad!
DtEW
4 months ago |The 30/1.4 is for A-mount, not E-mount.
Frank
4 months ago |Is it? Not according to the press release! It is for Sigma, Canon and Nikon mounts…
spaceman
4 months ago |Oh…the 30mm/1.4 is not E-mount, damn. Filter thread of 62mm makes it quite larger than and e-mount prime.
Karsten Seiferlin
4 months ago |I had hoped for faster lenses, especially a faster replacement for the 30/2.8. The “old” 30mm lens was excellent and really didn’t need an update, but if so, it should have been one or two stops faster. When I read 30/1.4 I was excited, but I was disappointed when I saw that it’s an A mount lens.
yosemite
4 months ago |Nothing fast for E-mount still? What a bummer. I’d have hoped for a 16 mm for E, since good wide angles are really lacking, as well as a 24 mm (optimal walkaround lens for me, but the Zeiss is way above my budget).

4 months ago |The 30mm and 19mm perhaps have better glass and a nice metal finishing but is that worth the price increase we’ll see?
They had better included OSS or F1.8.
The 60mm F2.8 DN is also going to be hard to sell if it’s not cheaper than the SEL 50mm F18 with OSS.
The Lotus Eater
4 months ago |Yep, I see little reason to invest in a non-stabilised 60mm f/2.8 when Sony already has a 50mm which is faster, stabilised and a decent enough price. The Sigma would have to be half the price or have exceptional image quality.
The new 30mm and 19mm look very interesting though.
jb
4 months ago |The 60mm/2.8 really should have had true macro (1:1) capabilities – THAT would sell as the only macro options are the 30mm (have to be WAY too close) or a non-native lens. Like you mentioned, I just don’t know who would by this over the 50mm/1.8.
The Lotus Eater
4 months ago |A 60mm (or slightly longer) macro would be nice, but then that would make OSS even more of a necessity.
jb
4 months ago |My EF-S 60mm macro performs incredibly well on my 60D without IS. I’m literally waiting on a high quality macro lens to jump ship to a NEX. My reservation about the upcoming 50mm macro from Zeiss is that it’ll just be too short. The 60mm is almost too short on my 1.6x sensor, a 50mm on a 1.5x sensor would be even shorter
In general, at macro distances, IS/OSS doesn’t have much effect. Having said that, image stabilization would be a nice enhancement in the rare case it did help and also when using the lens for other purposes.
Paul
4 months ago |Will the new 19 mmm and 30 mm lenses be any better than the “old” ones?
ItsaChris
4 months ago |No the mtf and lens construction are identical to the old ones. you can find the data on http://sigma-global.com/en/lenses/cas/product/index.html
But I am looking forward to the 60mm!
60mm sigma dimensions – 2.4in x 2.2in
sony nex 50mm 1.8 – 2.44 x 2.44
It looks like a solid lens
-shorter than the sony 50mm
-yet longer/”better” focal length
-Solid MTF
http://sigma-global.com/en/lenses/cas/product/art/a_60_28/images/data/mtf.gif
Cons
-not macro… Fujis 60mm f2.4 macro 1:2 is almost the same length 2.8 in
-not overly fast (should be fine)
-no oss (but I have found it to be rarely useful over the years.)
RD
4 months ago |I’m very impressed by Sigma. Their new line of lenses all look great. Of course, I’ll save judgement until I see some sample shots. I’m thinking about getting their new 17-70mm f/2.8-4 as an everyday lens for my A55 but I’m just waiting for some reviews.
Emir
4 months ago |I mentioned earlier that there should be a NEX->Alpha adapter, and got the response “why? all Sonys Nex lenses are available for Alpha…” yes they are, but not from 3rd party manufacturers
RD
4 months ago |I don’t think that would be easy since the E-mounts sit closer to the sensor compared to A-mount lenses.
Which lenses are you talking about? I think there are plenty of 3rd party lenses that cover the same or at least very similar focal lengths as the E-mount lenses.
The Lotus Eater
4 months ago |It isn’t technically possible, Emir. The e-mount lenses would have to sit inside the camera, behind the Alpha lens mount.
Pablo
4 months ago |Sigma, go to hell with those F/2.8 lenses! People want faster glass, not any more of those 2.8 toys.
John Maverick
4 months ago |Actually they complement the E-mount range really well. The payoff, is that the Sigma’s with their multiple aspherical elements are brutally sharp across the frame. For someone that wants more speed then the SONY’s 24, 35, 50 are all f/1.8 and include OSS for low light. Otherwise there’the Summiluxes!
In practice, after I have a couple of fast lenses at normal and longer lengths for portrait isolation, I find I don’t care so much. With these new Sigma’s one can mix and match depending on need.
Dean
4 months ago |That is all I want to say, ahaha~~ All of these F2.8s should be ignored. no quick E lens, no interest in sigma.
Anonymous
4 months ago |I got excited that the Sigma 30/1.4 was for NEX, then I realized it was for a-mount only, then I realized it wasn’t for a-mount. Mega disappointed. Also all the new e-mount lenses are only f/2.8? I can’t wait anymore for a fast prime, I’m going to put my NEX-7 on eBay and buy an X-e1 + 35/1.4.
The Lotus Eater
4 months ago |Yes, course you are. Do you even have an NEX-7?
Almazar80
4 months ago |I gather it’s 1.4 or bust for you?
DD
4 months ago |“I can’t wait anymore for a fast prime…” So the 24/1.8, 35/1.8, and 50/1.8 aren’t fast enough primes for you? Or do they not count for some made up reason? “OMG, it’s not f/1.4! How will I ever take pictures of my kids/cats/food/etc. again?!?”
GeminiRx
4 months ago |I just checked out the official press release. And does not mention the 30mm 1.4 in A mount. Only Sigma Canon and Nikon….. Also a lot of shops in my neighborhood dont have Amount lenses anymore. Ones there sold no new ones are coming and some dont even list them on there websites.
This makes me nerves…

4 months ago |Same focal distance, same brightness, nothing changes.
John Maverick
4 months ago |Presumably also updated to work with phase-detect auto focus!
pepe
4 months ago |What is to love about those lenses? The best one (30f1.4) not available for e-mount. The others still too slow without oss and with probably limited, or perhaps none at all manual focusing. Really disappointing.

Seems Very good alternative to sel50/1.8 for portraits…

4 months ago |Cheer up guys.
30and 19 can be thought as minor updates.
Most likely they fixed the rattling issue and improved on AF speed. Could work even better with hybrid AF.
If you dont have the e-mount 30mm, this one sshould be on your list. Optically even if marginally better you are looking at an outstanding performer already.
Dont be fooled with f2.8 looking ‘slow’. How many lenses can you really use wide open? This one you can. And it is almost pancake smmall.
And now handsomE too
Frank
4 months ago |I am not cheered to hear that Sigma haven’t committed to releasing the new 30mm or 120-300mm for A-mount. It suggests that they aren’t predicted to sell well on A-mount.
They have updated the 17-70mm F2.8-4, so my guess is that past sales on A-mount made this one worthwhile, but then it is a common kit lens replacement.
After the 70-200mm and 90mm macro this year it will be interesting to see how well A-mount is supported by Sigma and Tamron from 2014…
andrew
4 months ago |Could be that they’re not announcing a-mount lenses until they’ve got capacity to release them – the 35/1.4 has been massively delayed considering how long the Canikon versions have been out…
I’ve just bought the old 30/1.4 so not planning on upgrading it soon!
Frank
4 months ago |Sigma usually put a note in there to say that Sony will come later.
aardvark7
4 months ago |This is typical Sigma: all fanfare and little substance, especially for Sony users.
The E mount lenses are not especially appealing without actual testing (and then only to limited numbers) and the 30mm f1.4 won’t even be available.
As to that availability of any of them, Sigma has a dismal record of producing the goods in reasonable time. I remember having wanted their 70-200 f2.8 and gave up after 18 months without it ever being released after the announcement.
Personally, although many of their lenses are exceptional, I don’t think we should ever listen to a thing they say until the goods hit the shelves.
Add to that the adverse effect on microadjust, as they aren’t coded correctly, and they are too much like hard work for Sony owners. I wish it were different but, unfortunately, it isn’t.
rod90
4 months ago |That explains the clearance pricing on the old 19mm and 30mm.
Hoping for faster autofocus, no rattle, or the focus motor completely stopping. And then improved performance over the already awesome originals at the same price would be very welcome. If it had OS that would give it a competitive compromise with the Sony 35mm 1.8 OSS. But the folks that really need to shoot wide open at 1.8 will still get the sony model. But adding OS to the sigma could make them think twice.

4 months ago |I don’t see any difference in the naming of the old and new 19 and 30mm NEX lenses. Old and new are just called DN.

4 months ago |Suddenly not so “Boring” any more, eh?
If these lenses are going to cost considerably more than those available from Sigma currently, and presumably replacing, I would have hoped for built in OSS. Oh well.

Jason
4 months ago |What do you want, a rubberized filigree around the focus ring?
Emilio
4 months ago |Oh yeah, the fast 1.4 for A mount only, and the three E mount lens 2.8 only!!, sorry Sigma, you will get no money from me this time.
Rooru S.
4 months ago |But they’re getting money from many people that wanted super sharp lenses. Remember when the 30mm f/2.8 reviews all said that the Sigma were sharper than any other Sony lens and were comparable to Zeiss quality?
andrew
4 months ago |Was hoping the 60mm would be a macro – very disappointing… Yet more slow primes to add to the pile – I’m not exactly rushing to sell my a77!
Also no mention of pentax in the press release – are sigma abandoning everything except Canikon and their own mount?!
Frank
4 months ago |As I said earlier, they have announced an update for the 17-70mm F2.8-4 on A-mount, it’s a popular kit lens replacement I guess. The 30mm and 120-300mm won’t be, so aren’t getting an update.
fiberstrobe
4 months ago |I also hoped that sigma would release a 60mm macro. I was a bit disappointed. I have the sel 50mm 1.8 stabilized lens and I’m not interested in the new lenses but perhaps for others it can be a good alternative.

4 months ago |boring E-mount lens =__=a
when they give E-mount lens large aperture lens F/1.4??

4 months ago |At last something. I can live with f/2.8 (ISO 200) no problem. Hope we get quality. The odds are good sue to the new quality control Sigma has.
Ayoul
4 months ago |Fabulous. 2 “redesigned” lenses, with the same focal lenght and the same aperture. Generaly, It means that there will be just some slights and overpriced improvements. Wait and see… Or buy the old cheap lenses before sigma applies them the death sentence…
60 is a good idea for potrait (90mm), but 2.8 is a little bit slow for this use.
Chris Lewis
4 months ago |While I welcome the new 60mm, I have to say that I’m quite disappointed that when Sigma chose to revamp the existing 19 and 30mm lenses – which are great lenses and didn’t really need re-styling without upping their spec. Had they been made into f2 or f1.8 versions, they would have been much more appealing.
Also how about a 90mm or 100mm?
So, Sigma, your “school report”: good but not good enough!

4 months ago |What kind of update do they bring for the new 30mm and 19mm?
Though i actually wish they make a macro lens for E-mount
Poki
4 months ago |I guess the optical design of the 19 and 30mm lenses is the same as for the old ones, but with a sleek, new metal body, they’ll compete much better to the Sony offers. Indeed, they look awesome! I’d buy the 60mm one if it would be f/1.8, but at 2.8 it’s too similar to the upcoming 50mm CZ, and I can’t justify buying two f/2.8 lenses at this range.
Almazar80
4 months ago |I guess Sony, with a 24mm, 35mm, 50mm and 85mm (hopefully soon) f1.8 lenses isn’t doing too badly, except in the price department (at least the 50mm is reasonably priced – the 24 and 35 could go a little lower). With the 10-18mm f4, a nice 60mm macro and a 55-200mm f4 (fixed) would be very welcome.
