UPDATE: Steve Huff, Sansmirror FE lens info are FAKE.

The info shared yesterday by Steve Huff  (50mm f/1.2 Zeiss) and some time ago by Sansmirror (FE lens roadmap) is almost certainly completely FAKE. They took for real that FAKE roadmap posted by a Chinese readers (See article here). YOu see the roadmap info he posted on top. So their info is wrong unless I am wrong and Steve and Thom got info from their own sources…

P.S.: Just to be clear: I don’t bash on Thom and Steve. It happens to myself to post wrong rumors from time to time :)

(UPDATE: Fake!): Steve Huff says Sony will launch a 50mm f/1.2 FE Zeiss lens. And new A7s reviews.

Steve Huff posted his A7s review and I don’t know if that’s just his speculation or an info he got from Sony but he writes:

Sony has some new lenses planned for 2014 and 2015, one of then being an ultra wide zoom and a Zeiss 50 1.2.

UPDATE: SAR readers digged Steve’s “rumor” and it seems like the info is completely fake and based on a fake roadmap I posted a while ago: (See article here). Of course I wrote that this roadmap floating around the web is almost certainly 99% fake. But I guess some people didn’t get my message :)

That said the official Sony roadmap says a fast prime lens is on schedule. Although I would prefer to get a fast 35mm or 85mm lens first instead of the 50mm f/1.2. Or what would you like to get?

And here are soem more A7s tests: Sony A7S Sample Images at Photographyblog and Sony A7s silent shutter test by ThePhoBlographer on Instagramm. [UPDATE: Photographyblog just published the full A7s review.]

(SR3) Surprise: New RX Full Frame camera with Black and White sensor coming late 2014?

This is a Leica diagram to explain the Leica Monochrome advantage.

A couple of months ago I told you that I got rumors about Sony working on a Black and White Full Frame sensor. Recently I got a rumor from an anonymous source about a new B&W camera:

Sony has understand that niche markets are profitable and is developing a FF CMOS black and white sensor for his flag ship RX-1. I was told that the sensor has a higher frame rate, +6db S/N gain compared to the color version and resolution of 24MP. My source said also that this will probably be available end of 2014, start of 2015. It look like Sony is really a nightmare not only for Leica but also for NIKANON.

I pray to all gods that this will become true! This could become the sharpest, purest and highest dynamic range FF camera ever made! There is currently one such camera and it is the Leica Monochrome ($8000 here at Amazon). But I am sure the Sony camera will have a superior Image Quality and I guess price will be under $3000 just like the current RX1/RX1R series.

Would you buy the Sigma 200mm f/2.0 FE lens?

Sony is working on a Lytro alike camera (Patent).

The complex image on top shows you a new Sony Light Field sensor that has been patented by Sony (United States Application US20140071244). Basically it’s a Sony version of the famous new Lytro Illum (here on Amazon). As you know a Light field camera can take the entire light field instead of a pure 2D image. It means you can refocus in post production and even change the perspective. Try it out here:

Click to refocus. Click and drag for Perspective Shift. (Source: Pictures Lytro).

Well, the drawback of such cameras is that the resolution is very low. And that’s exactly what Sony claims to have fixed in this patent:

a camera system that have no useless pixel arrangement and are capable of suppressing decrease in resolution which may be caused by adopting stereo function.

The sensor tech is very complicated and we have to see how long it will take for Sony to get this into a real mass-produced camera. But now imagine for a second to have a Full Frame camera with such a sensor. Damn, that would be amazing …or not?

(SR2) A-mount rumors: New 135mm Zeiss shipping early 2015. New 85mm Zeiss coming too?

A99 with the Zeiss 135mm lens (Courtesy of Adalbert).

Two weeks ago I told you how the current Zeiss 135mm f/1.8 A-mount lens would get replaced at Photokina. The new version is said to have the same optical design but it will be upgraded with the “SSM” focusing mechanism. According to a source from the French site Chassimages the new Zeiss will ship in early 2015 (has 77mm filter diameter and weights 1050g). The source said that also the current 85mm f/1.4 A-mount lens will get a similar update later.

Both current Zeiss lenses got a $100 discount in US:
$100 off on the Zeiss 135mm at Amazon, Adorama, BHphoto and SonyStore.
$100 off on the 85mm f/1.4 Zeiss at Amazon, Adorama, BHphoto and SonyStore.

Canon to start a new sensor tech “war” in September.

I have a good news and it’s coming via Canon :) The last couple of years Sony did lead the sensor world and Canon is struggling to keep up with Sony. But according to Stefan from CanonWatch Canon will now strike back with a new kind of sensor tech that will find his way in new cameras announced at Photokina. It’s good news for us because it means that Sony will have to answer soon too and we may see a sort of 3 layer Sony sensor sooner than expected.

At least at Low-ISO the 3 layer sensor from Sigma already shows an impressive performance (see here at MirrorlessRumors). But there are many issues on noise handling and so on. I am sure Sony has the knowledge to fix them and also to match if not beat any new Canon sensor tech.

All I can tell you know is that I heard about a 54 Full Frame Megapixel sensor from Sony (with 2460 focusing points (no joke!) and the focusing area covers 78% of the entire sensor). It was actually planed for a 2015 release but maybe Canon will make them change those plans…
