(SR4) New Sony A7/A7r sensor have optimized microlens design

One of my sources told me that the A7 and A7r cameras have an “optimized” sensor design to avoid issues on corners. The new microlens alignment and gapless design has been developed specifically for the E-mount FF cameras. Similar to what Leica has done for their Leica M FF series. The performance of Full Frame lenses (also third-party lenses via adapter) is said to be improved over the current [shoplink 14178 ebay]Sony NEX-VG900[/shoplink] sensor.

The source also said he didn’t have the chance to test this. So we have still to see if these aren’t void marketing words or a real major improvement over the VG900 sensor.

(SR5) A7 has on sensor PDAF while A7r has not (but comes without AA filter).

a Franken A7 (RX1+NEX-7+EVF) put together by a SAR reader based on the design rumors posted today. Obviously not a picture of the real camera and the real camera will be much nicer :)

I just learned via trusted sources that there are actually major differences between the two A7 and A7r sensors:

1) The A7 uses a 24 megapixel sensor with on sensor PDAF. It has an Anti Aliasing filter. This camera is more suited for sport or video recording
2) The A73 uses a 36 Megapixel sensor that has no PDAF on sensor. And it also has no Anti Aliasing filter just like the Nikon D800E. The camera is more appropriate for High resolution photography (like Landscape pics).

Both cameras have the same body (with built-in EVF in the middle-top of the camera). Both are weathersealed. Size close to the current RX1/R. The A7 costs around 1600-1700 Dollars (or Euro) and the A7r costs around 2300-2400 Dollars (or Euro).

Note: the image on top is a poor PS job but a source said it’s more or less how it will be :) We still have to see the specs and images of the camera…but here is the question:

Will you buy the new $1,199 Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 FE lens?

(SR4) A7 and A7r price in Canadian Dollars.

An anonymous source (Thanks!) sent me the A7a nd A7 prices in Canadian Dollars:

1) The A7 with 24MP sensor will be $1700 Canadian MAP

2) The A7r with 36MP sensor will be $2300 Canadian MAP

The source didn’t share the kit price info. I don’t have the price in US dollar but for comparison the RX1 costs $2999 in Canada (henrys) and $2799 in USA (Amazon).

A note: A reader claims that he has seen the A7 image on Sony Australia website (Click here) but the link he shared doens’t work. Did one of our SAR readers find and download it?

(SR5) Current E-mount APS-C lenses will work in two modes on the A7 and A7r!

A source just told me something very interesting. The current APS-C E-mount lenses like for example the [shoplink 8450]Zeiss 24mm f/1.8[/shoplink] will work in two modes on the Full Frame E-mount A7 and A7r cameras:

1) Crop mode: It means you can use the lens like it would be attached on a NEX-5-6-7

2) Full Frame mode: It means you can use the lens with Full…Full Frame activated. I have been told some lenses will have a cool heavy vignetting effect and some lenses will also cover almost the full FF area. it could be useful if you want to use a larger than APS-C area (4/3 mode or so).

Sounds funny! :)

And now an interesting note for German readers: The Wallimex 24mm T/1.5 Lens for EF mount that usually sells for close to 7000 Eruo can be bought for 88 Euro(!!!). This is a FF lens so if you buy a 10 Euro EF to NEX adapter you can use it on your A7 or A7r! (SR5) A7 price lower than current Canon and Nikon FF cameras!

The image on top shows you the two cheapest Full Frame Cameras on market, the Canon 6D (Around $1,900 now at Amazon) and the Nikon D600 (also around $1,900). According to sources the new cheapest FF camera on market will be the soon to be announced “Sony A7“. Body only will be priced around 1600-1700 Euro/Dollars and there will be a kit option with the 28-70mm lens for less than 2000 Euro/Dollars. I will get the 100% final price soon.

UPDATE: While the A7 with 24MP is priced well below the $2000 mark the A7r with 36MP will be priced above $2,000!

(SR5) updated and corrected: The A7 and A7r are weathersealed.

Short update on the new A7 and A7r cameras:

1) Both cameras will not have on sensor stabilization

2) Both cameras are weathersealed! UPDATED: Sorry. I first wrote their are NOT weathersealed but it was a copy and past error from me. They are weathersealed!!!

I am not sure yet but I think more advanced models will come in 2014. The A7 and A7r do sound more like great entry-level E-mount FF cameras.
