Sony A99 Review (Photography Blog)

[shoplink 14165][/shoplink]

Photography Blog reviewed the [shoplink 14165]Sony A99 (price & specs)[/shoplink]. Beside confirming that the image quality is excellent, the 24.3 full-frame camera gets more positive points. In the conclusion they write:

The Sony A99 combines virtually all of the company's latest cutting-edge camera technologies with an excellent full-frame sensor and a proven body design to create a realistic rival to the likes of the Nikon D800 and Canon EOS 5D Mark III. Traditionalists may not appreciate the electronic viewfinder or more limited range of lenses, but there's lots to like if you can get over that particular preconception (including the excellent EVF itself). The A99 is perhaps the most well-appointed full-frame DSLR on the market. A magnesium-alloy body with weather-sealed controls, two control dials, fast 6fps burst mode, a clever 3-way swiveling LCD screen, useful top LCD panel, innovative dual AF system, focus peaking, flash sync socket, uncompressed HDMI output, built-in GPS and an optional vertical grip. The only missing feature that we can think of is Wi-Fi connectivity, something that only the recent Canon EOS 6D offers out of the box.

Surprised? I am not! :-) Check the final ratings (out of 5):

  • Design 4.5
  • Features 5
  • Ease-of-use 4.5
  • Image Quality 4.5
  • Value for money 4.5

(SR2) All three new Zeiss lenses cover FF?

I got a rumor form a new source that might be interesting to discuss. But please keep in mind that this rumor hasn’t been confirmed yet by any trusted sources so keep your feet on ground. As you know Zeiss will launch three new E-mount AF lenses this year. The 12mm f/2.8, 32mm f/1.8 and 50mm f/1.8 lens. The one new source told me that these lenses will cover the full Full Frame area in preparation of the launch of the new FF NEX by end of this year or early 2014. And the source also told me the main issue for Zeiss is to remove the heavy vignetting on the 12mm wide angle lens.

UPDATE: Back at Photokina Zeiss said these lenses were designed for APS-C. What the source says is that the lenses will be redesigned to cover FF.

Again, this is no SR4 SR5 rated rumors. But if true…this is deifnitely a good news!

(SR3) 85mm f/1.8 is an all Black lens.

I have been told there will be 5-6 new E-mount lenses announced in 2013. One of them is almost certainly the High Quality standard zoom from Zeiss. Another rumor I got (from new sources) is that there will be a 85mm f/1.8 lens and to be more specific this will be an all Black color lens.

I repeat, I still need the confirmation from my trusted sources to be almost sure (SR5) about the lens release.

Winston:Here is a vacation video that I shot with the NEX-7, A77 and HX9V.  If you ever get a chance to visit Wyoming, I think you’ll want to keep going back. https://vimeo.com/53995443 The NEX-7 and A77 were handheld, the HX9V mounted in the hood of the car. Also, while I wish the A99 was priced lower, I can’t help but think that a great value the A57/18-135mm combination was at $750 U.S.

Rob:Hello, I’ve been shooting with a Sony A55 for quite some time now, refining my technique.  There are many things I like about the A55, but as I’ve transitioned into larger amounts of video work, the lack of fully manual controls has been frustrating.  Despite this, I believe you can still shoot excellent video with the A55, if you know how to use it, how it’s running itself, and some of the workarounds for greater creative control.  Having the camera set the shutter speed and ISO takes out much of the guesswork for those just getting into video, but obviously doesn’t allow as much flexibility down the line.  I find that generally the camera does a decent job of choosing a proper ISO and shutter speed under most lighting conditions.  There are situations (challenging lighting, concerts, etc…) where the A55 and it’s lack of manual controls comes up wanting, but for a body that you can find used for under $500 now, I think it’s a great value.
I recently completed work on a music video, shot at Garden of the Gods in Colorado as well as a mansion just outside of Boulder.  All video was shot with my Sony A55, 18-55 kit lens and Minolta 50/1.7 prime.
The A55, while not ideal for video, still turns out great results if you know how to use it properly.  Here’s the link to my video for Useful Jenkins from Mankato, MN.  The song is called “Waitin to Die”
