OFFICIAL: Nikon buys RED and goes after the Sony Cine camera market

Share

This is a surprising news! Nikon did acquire 100% of RED to compete directly with Sony in the Cine camera market. Full press text and additional info can be read at Nikoneye.com.

Quick considerations about the possible benefits for Nikon and RED:

For Nikon:

  • Maybe some Nikon cameras will get the REDCODE RAW recording feature
  • Access to some amazing sensor tech

For RED:

  • Maybe future RED camera will have Z-mount instead of the current Canon RF mount
  • Red could have access to Nikon glass

Surprise results from the CineD Lab test: The Sony A9III is the best Sony Alpha camera to date in video mode in terms of dynamic range!

Share

CineD put the Sony A9III to rigorous testing and the conclusion is quite a surprise:

The Sony Alpha 9 III displays fantastic results in our lab test. Rolling shutter by the very nature of the global shutter design is non-existent (effectively 0ms) – the best we have and will ever see for full-frame sensors. It cannot get better from here.

Dynamic range using our Xyla21 chart and IMATEST analysis is average when compared to other full-frame consumer cameras. But as is so often the case, IMATEST results are only one piece of the puzzle looking at the dynamic range of a camera. It basically gives a feel for how noisy images are at the various Xyla stops (patches). And here it can be clearly seen that the global shutter sensor is definitely noisier than its CMOS full-frame counterparts seen in other consumer full-frame cameras.

But Sony applied some magic to the image pipeline including the codecs, as the fine noise of the sensor is conserved in the final image and shadows can be massively pushed in post without ugly larger blotches of noise. This results in a superb 9 stops of exposure latitude with some room towards 10, making it the best Sony Alpha camera to date in video mode in terms of dynamic range! It is also the best consumer full-frame camera in that regard.

What a surprise – all this from a global shutter sensor! Well, as mentioned at the beginning of the article, times are a’changin …

That supports the other findings from youtubers like Gerald Undone. The A9III has quite “workable” files where you can recover quite a lot of information.

Sony will soon announce a world’s first: The Sony 24-70mm f/2.0 lens Full Frame E-mount lens!

Share

According to two trusted sources Sony will soon announce a new 24-70mm f/2.0 lens. No one in the history of photography has ever made such a lens!
The closest lens is the current Canon 28-70mm f/2.0. But having 4 mm more at the wide end makes this lens much more attractive to a variety of photographers. You can shoot landscapes and take beautiful portraits–a real jack-of-all-trades!
From what I have heard, this lens should be about the same size as the Canon, while having a longer focal length. So it should still be “practical” and not too heavy. I have been told that the image quality is superb, and that there is no compromise in getting the 2.0 aperture.
I do not yet have an exact release date or pricing information to share. But I understand that this lens may be announced in the next few months, and my guess is that the price will be around 3000+.

But today’s rumor is good news for multiple reasons:

  • This appears to be the first in a new series of super-fast zooms and primes.
  • It seems that in general Sony wants to create an exciting “new kind” of product… not only in lenses, but also in cameras!

What else can we expect?
I am starting to get some rumors about the next upcoming superfast lens, the Sony 24-70 mm f/2.0, about which I will soon share some “wild rumors” (meaning they are unconfirmed). I also got the first hints about the announcement of a major camera(s) coming in the second half of the year. I hope my dream of something “different” will come true….new RX fixed lens camera or some other exciting new camera concept. Now, let me know in the comment system what you think about this lens, and what kind of super fast lens you hope to get after that one!
