Curiosity: Last APS-C E-mount lens was announced over 3 years ago!

Share

AmazonUS

First curiosity: You should check out the top seller lenses list at Amazon US (Click here). And you will notice a surprise. The three best selling Sony lenses are not GM or FE lenses but all APS-C E-mount. Surprised? Me not!

Second curiosity: Back in August 27, 2013 Sony announced the very last ASP-C E-mount lens, the Sony E PZ 18-105mm F4 G OSS. And just like it happened with A-mount Sony stopped every ASP-C E-mount camera development and release to focus on the FE lenses. Sony’s big argument for that step is that FF E-mount lenses can be used on ASP-C E-mount cameras too. But obviously there are three caveats with this:

  1. FE lenses are designed for a specific FF focal length. Example: The 24-70mm FE lens is going to be a pretty useless 36-105mm lens on the A6300.
  2. FE lenses are more expensive than ASP-C lenses (mainly because they have to be bigger)
  3. FE lenses are unneccessary bigger because they are designed to cover a much larger image circle. This means you end up with things like this: The 85mm f/1.4 GM is a lot bigger than the Fuji 56mm  f/1.2 lens (84mm FF equivalent)

This post is simply a reminder for Sony to not forget proper APS-C lens development! You know…you probably will sell them all anyway! :)

Sony will live stream the IBC press conference on Friday, September 9th at 9am CET (Berlin time). Sony writes:

Sony will be joined by its peers to unveil products, systems and solutions, and to discuss new technology standards underpinning new ways of working for media organisations.

This is not the kind of event where Sony is likely to introduce new consumer product. But it may be interesting to see what kind of new professional High-Tech products they will announce at the show.

I know you all couldn’t wait to spend $42,600.00 Cooke miniS4/i Cine Lens Set of Six Lenses (Click here). Well, if you really have the money there is good news for you as Cook just announced the E-mount adapter to fit all those PL-mount lenses on any E-mount camera:

Cooke Optics, the multi-award winning manufacturer of precision lenses for film and television, is pleased to announce that it is introducing multiple mounts for its acclaimed miniS4/i lenses, enabling more cameras and productions to benefit from the ‘Cooke Look®’. The new mounts, including Canon EF, Nikon F, Sony E and micro 4/3, will be available to view at IBC 2016 on Stand 12.D10 and will ship from October 2016.

A single mount will fit every focal length lens in the miniS4/i series. For existing miniS4/i lenses, users can simply unbolt the PL mount that comes as standard, bolt on the replacement mount, and shim as required. The mounts can be used on any miniS4/i lens, regardless of delivery date. For new miniS4/i deliveries, starting from October 2016, the lenses will be available with the mount of choice from the factory. The mounts are designed for the MIRRORless cameras.

Les Zellan, Chairman and Owner, Cooke Optics, said, “The miniS4/i lenses are steadily gaining popularity for many genres of production, since they have all the coveted attributes of Cooke prime lenses in a smaller, lighter and more affordable form. With the introduction of these interchangeable mounts, we can now bring the Cooke Look to many more cameras and productions, giving even more choice to directors of photography.”

miniS4/i lenses were recently used to shoot the popular UK TV drama Midsomer Murders and the Spanish feature film El Pregon.
Cooke will also show the new 35-140mm Anamorphic/i zoom lens at IBC 2016, alongside a variety of Anamorphic/i, 5/i, S4/i and miniS4/i lenses.
