Dpreview’s autofocus test: “Sony Alpha 7R II can match or beat DSLR low light AF performance”!

A7rII in Stock in USA and Germany too: The A7rII is in Stock at Amazon USA (via third part resellers) at [shoplink 39551 ebay]eBay Germany (Click here)[/shoplink] at [shoplink 39493 ebay]E-infinity on eBay (Click here)[/shoplink] and Digitalrev (Click here).

Dpreview posted their big autofocus Sony A7rII test and their conclusion is absolutely sensational:

The a7R II, when paired with a bright lens, can match or exceed the performance of the best DSLRs with respect to low-light AF ability. And we haven’t even shared the most exciting thing with you yet: although in this video we show you results at -2EV, our ‘extinction’ tests measured -3EV as the failing point of phase-detection with the a7R II + 35mm F1.4 combo. That’s very dark, and represents potentially game-changing performance, in our opinion.4

Sounds like for the very first time Canon and Nikon managers will REALLY have to worry about Sony taking away the spotlight from their Full Frame Pro market!

DSLRmagazine: Sony A7rII JPG files are as good as the Canon 5DSr and Phase One XF RAW files!

CROP_Sony_A7RII_vs_Canon_5DS_vs_Phase_One_XF_01_AAA

The SPanish review site DSLRmagazine (translation here) posted a detailed Sony A7rII vs Canon 5DSr vs Phase One XF comparison. Of particular interest is that very big comparison chart image you can see here: dslrmagazine.com/images/stories/Pruebas/Sony_A7RII_Captor/SCP.jpg. In very short the conclusion of the reviewer is:

1) Sony’s JPG files show excellent processing. It significantly increases the feeling of sharpness rivaling even with RAW versions of the 50 Megapixel models (Canon-Phase One) showing a larger but not sharper file.
2) The overall quality of the new Sony A7RII is really noticeable until it reaches ISO 6400 / ISO 12800.

Focus Numerique also posted a new A7rII ISO test. Their graph below shows how up to ISO 12,800 noise is acceptable and then suddenly doubles with the next stop and goes crazy high at ISO 102,400.

They also compared the A7rII against the Nikon D810, A7s and Canon 5ds:

Ultimately, it is the new Sony A7R II and BSI sensor that wins this comparison. The progress made by Sony in the management of electronic noise when creating JPEGs are really impressive

Sony Interview at Imaging Resource: DSLR market is shrinking. 4K market is growing crazy fast.

Share

Bildschirmfoto-2015-06-10-um-19.51.25-700x452

Imaging Resource interviewed Mike Fasulo, Neal Manowitz and Toshifumi Okuda from Sony. Here are some key highlights of the interview:

1) DSLR market declinging: “So we see one of the challenges we have, as we were sharing last night, is that the DSLR market’s declining.”

2) 4K: “You’re looking at your personal creative work on a 4K monitor, there’s nothing more spectacular than that. You want to see a mom smile, just put her child in 4K on a television.”. Further there is a “Crazy-fast adoption for 4K TVs (4K is a really big deal)

3) Mirrorless is growing (but more slowly in USA): “if we look at the mirrorless market, it’s growing significantly. It’s been growing for years in Asia as well, but there’s quite unique differences, right? In the US market, as Mike pointed out, bigger is better.”

4) DSLR vs Mirrorless: “What’s exciting is simply that you can capture an image that you could have never captured before. You can do things that you couldn’t have done before. Forget about the technology, whether it happens to be mirrorless or DSLR, that’s not the real win here. What’s happening is that the technology enables you to do something special.”

5) System cameras vs Smartphones: “We’re competing against how we convince customers to come back to the imaging world. Everybody seems to feel good enough with a smartphone camera, but that’s not necessarily the case.”

6) Sony-Olympus partnership: “for now, I will say there is no impact or an influence in terms of the Digital Imaging product concerned”

7) High Frame rate on new cameras: “High frame rate is an area where it doesn’t show up as high in terms of the voice from the customer, but we see the opportunity. And there’s been many times in our history where there is that imagination, that ability and the conviction to go after that market, right?”

8) A7rII and A-mount lenses: “On the Sony A7R II, the technology lends to everything we were talking about upstairs, with the better focusing and the ability for it to now use A-mount glass as if it was native glass. And that’s a big benefit, especially for someone that’s already invested in A-mount cameras and their lens technologies. So there’s a huge value there.”

Imaging Resource conslusion is:

Bottom line, nothing’s ever a given in the camera business, and ongoing success is never assured. But Sony seems to have developed a set of successful strategies, has a good understanding of where their strengths lie, and shows no sign of letting up any time soon. Stay tuned; there’s never been a better time to be a photographer, and Sony certainly seems poised to do their part in continuing to let the good times roll :-)

iFixit shows us the “naked” A7rII. Fascinating…and complex!

iFixit ripped apart the new Sony A7rII camera. It’s quite fascinating to see how the camera is made! There is a lot of tech and features on this camera packed into a very small body. That’s also why the repairability Score is only 4 out of 10 (10 is easiest to repair).

And Thurtlepower.com tested if the new A7rII is good enough for wedding photograpy use:

“So how do I rate the Sony a7RM2 as a camera for weddings? In short it’s great.”

As easy as that :)

(New A7rII reviews) AP: “huge step up from the Alpha 7R”. Justin Dise: “is a powerhouse of a camera”.

Amateur Photographer (Click here) reviewed the A7rII and writes:
The Alpha 7R II is a huge step up from the Alpha 7R. If you’re sitting on the fence wondering whether the Alpha 7R II is worth changing to from a heavy and bulky DSLR, I’d highly recommend you try it. If you’re anything like me, you’re likely to find yourself checking your bank balance to work out if you can afford it. One thing’s for certain – if you do bite the bullet and settle for the Alpha 7R II you won’t be dissatisfied by its results and you’ll be a proud owner of one of the finest compact full-frame cameras available.

Cameraman Justin Dise posted his A7rII review on Explora (Click here):

The Sony a7RII is a powerhouse of a camera that can deliver some of the best Super 35mm 4K video outside of professional cinema cameras—and even then, it can hold its own. Sony didn’t hold back when designing this camera, packing a full-frame BSI sensor, internal 4K recording, 5-axis in-body stabilization, and 42MP still images, to boot. For hybrid photographers/videographers, the camera is a no-brainer. Would I recommend the camera for a video shooter? Absolutely, but you’ll have to weigh the rolling shutter and heat issues into your consideration. Should an a7S owner sell their camera to buy this one? If money isn’t an issue—the a7RII currently costs more than the a7S—then I would be inclined to say yes.

Yole prediction paper: Sony will further increase the sensor quality advantage over the competition!

Share

With the new A7rII Sony made a new step forward to increase their sensor quality advantage over the competition. And as soon as Sony will give us real 14bit RAW we will be able to squeeze out some more performance out of it! Yes that’s me again making some push on Sony :)

What can we expect from the future Sony sensor development? Pierre Cambou from Yole Development is sure Sony will increase the technological advantage over the competition:

“Yole forecasts that the CIS industry will reach $10B this year, with Sony remaining the undisputed world leader –mainly at image sensor level, but gaining strong momentum at camera module level too. And what will Sony’s $4B be used for? Probably to increase capacity, enhance R&D efforts, and further widen the gap between its competitors. It may also be used in applications that will generate a firm lead in automotive, and to develop sensing technologies for consumer and automotive applications. With this bold financing move, Sony is leveraging its leading technology position and demonstrating the confidence it has in its products, its technology, and its future.

Sony’s success story has or will have many consequences on the competition:
1) We already heard that Fuji will use a new Sony APS-C sensor on the X-PRO 2 which is rumored to be released in early 2016.
2) Nikon lost the exclusivity on new Sony FF sensors. I don’t know how Nikon will react to this
3) Also Pentax is rumored to use Sony sensor on their Pentax FF camera coming this fall.
4) Canon…yes Canon…what the heck will they do?
