Sony USA Manager Mark Weir explains why the a7rII can’t do 10bit and why it has no flip screen.

Share

Resourcemagonline posted the content of an interesting chat with Sony US manager Mark Weir:

1) Why the A7rII has tilt and not a flip out screen:
they made a conscious choice to make their rear LCD a tilt screen rather than a full flip-out screen. They believed that the compactness of the camera trumped the space it would take to add a hinge and provide a full flip-out screen.

2) Why the A7rII doesn’t record 10bit video:
The inability to shoot 10-bit is because of the processor. The BIONZ X processor in the Alpha series cameras can’t actually process anything past 8-bit 422.

3) Why the A7rII cannot do RX100m4 alike frame rates at 1080p:
The sensor Sony is using in the cameras that have HFR, the RX’s EXMOR RS sensor, is a stacked CMOS sensor. Such a sensor uses a different means by which the info is taken off the photo sensitive layer of the imager: the destination is behind the imager instead of going around it. The upside is that it is a transfer that is drastically faster than other means, and it opens a drastically larger pipe for information. Transfer rates are up to 5x better than before.
The EXMOR R sensor found in the a7r Mark II does not enjoy that structure, so cropping in on the sensor would not realize the transfer rate necessary nor does the a7R II have the D-RAM required for it to process that amount of data. So the problem is two fold: the data can’t flow off the sensor fast enough, and there is no place to put that data even if it could.

4) Difference between Exmor RS (Stacked) and Exmor R sensors:
The capabilities of the EXMOR RS sensor are meant to be fast readout, and that’s where it excels. The EXMOR R sensor excels at balance between sensitivity and high resolution.

5) So why can the GH4 handle slow motion, internal 4K and 10-bit 422 recording with an external recorder?
Well, the GH4 is bigger (if you can believe it, yes it totally is bigger than the Alpha series cameras) and therefore their issues with thermal management (which, if you read around you’ll find is a common complaint even with the newer, beefier bodies found in the a7 and a7R II) are not nearly as extreme. Also, Sony has added that internal sensor stabilizer, meaning they’ve got even less room to use in that tiny body than you might think. And then of course you look at Panasonic’s processor, which however it works, manages to do the things the Sony one cannot, given the size of the sensor and the heat situation with the body.

DxO tests the A7rII sensor: Is the new king of Full Frame (by a hair)

Share

Bildschirmfoto 2015-08-26 um 20.03.51

DxOmark (Click here) just posted the full Sony A7rII sensor results. And the A7rII scores the highest result of any Full Frame camera although it beats the Nikon D810 by 1 point only. So yes, we all expected the A7rII to be the best performing camera at DXO, but I guess we also all expected it to be really a couple of points better! And compared to the A7r the new camera has a 0.2 less point dynamic range. Not sure how this one can be correct. I hope other reviewers can check this out!

One more thing: Brian Smith reports that a large Stock of A7rII cameras will ship on September 2 at Bhphoto (get them here now). The camera is alrady in Stock at FocusCamera (Click here).

Zeiss: “more substantial volume of lenses is scheduled in September 2015, thanks to an expansion of the production capacity”

ZeissBatis

A couple of days ago I posted an article on the Batis shipment shortage (Click here). Some readers reported that their preorder at Digitalrev got canceled because “our suppliers are not able to confirm with us when the next available stock can be ordered” (Source: Pete). Some other reported that their May 11 preorder at BH still didn’t ship and there is still no ship date (Source: Cbw).

Finally we have good news to report: After reading our article Zeiss released an official statement to clarify the future availability of Batis lenses. We deeply thank Zeiss for the helpful note! It’s a very good example of how to communicate with your own customers. Here is their text via Zeiss FB page:

The worldwide positive feedback from the first product reviews about the ZEISS Batis lenses and the demand for the lenses has been overwhelming.
We made the first shipments of the ZEISS Batis lenses to our global distribution partner network in mid-July 2015. Additional shipments were made in August 2015 and a more substantial volume of lenses is scheduled in September 2015, thanks to an expansion of the production capacity. This expansion will help serving the global markets more efficiently in the coming months.
At this time, the global demand is much higher than our current supply and we anticipate a wait of several months for orders which are placed now. If you have already ordered the lens from one of our dealers, then we will ship on a first-in, first-out basis depending on when the order was received. It is not possible for us to accurately predict when you will receive your order, since this is also dependent on our international distribution partners’ and local dealers’ allocation process which we have no influence over. In general, orders placed in late April and May should be delivered in the coming weeks, with later orders shipped in the months of October and November.
If you are interested, order immediately so as to obtain your ZEISS Batis lenses as soon as possible.

(SR3) Sony A6xxx/a7xxxx has a new backlit sensor and RGBW pixel array.

 A6000gariz
The current A6000 with [shoplink 39753 ebay]Gariz case[/shoplink].

A new source shared some more details about the soon to be announced new Sony E-mount camera.

1) Sony is preparing the next step in video quality and experience

2) This is an interchangeable lens camera with
– Best in class low light performance (backlit sensor and RGBW pixel array)
– internal 4k video recording with full sensor readout in 60fps
– extremly fast autofocus system

This would become the world’s first System camera with RGBW sensor. More info about that sensor can be read via Sony.net:

The built-in “RGBW Coding” function which adds W (White) pixels to the conventional range of RGB (Red-Green-Blue) pixels has realized higher sensitivity, enabling high-quality shooting with low noise even in dark indoor or night settings. While the addition of W (White) pixels improves sensitivity, it has the problem of degrading image quality. However, Sony’s own device technology and signal processing realizes superior sensitivity without hurting image quality.

This is an info that still has to be confirmed by trusted sources. But my guts tells me that new source is spot on with the info he shared!

So when will it be announced? There is the IFA in Berlin (Sept. 7) and the IBC in Amsterdam (Sony press day on Sept. 11). There will be certainly new Sony action cameras, maybe QX news too. And I hope the 4K A6xxx will be announced in one of those events too. But so far no trusted source confirmed when the camera will be announced.

RX100m4 sensor gets DxOmaked. Is as good as the Canon EOS 7D Mk II sensor!

Share

Bildschirmfoto 2015-08-26 um 18.34.06

DxOmark posted the new Sony RX100m4 sensor test results. The good news is that there is a small improvement compared to the previous generation and:

For a physically small sensor, the new 20-Mpix Exmor RS BSI CMOS chip ranks high, coming in at 116th in our database for sensors of all sizes. Performance ranks alongside recent Micro-Four-Thirds models and even APS-C-equipped DSLR models such as the Canon EOS 7D Mk II and EOS 760D.
