And Nino Leitner from Cinema5D posted that great video shot with the new Batis lenses and writes:

The Batis lenses should be considered by video shooters who need a very lightweight option on their E-Mount cameras, who don’t work with a focus puller or focus marks, or who own a gimbal like a MoVi M5 or DJI Ronin, as the low weight is perfect for these devices. Photographers who shoot on E-Mount cameras like the A7 series should get the Batis lenses if they are looking for decent autofocus, low weight and a very sexy new kind of bokeh. It goes without saying that these lenses are extremely sharp, which is usually ZEISS’s top priority when designing lenses. They are certainly not as sharp as the OTUS line, but they also come in in a different price bracket!

Popphoto posted a short Batis lens hands-on report:

In terms of sharpness, my eyeball tests suggests what you might already suspect: When you get the focus right, both lenses are extremely sharp, even under scrutiny available thanks to the A7r’s big resolution. The bokeh on both lenses is nice and smooth, with round specular highlights thanks to the circular aperture.

Miguel Quiles shot a BTS video for Rangefinder Magazine using the new Batis 85 and the A7II: youtube.com/watch?v=sMaX6gAH4FM

Sony Store US will close on August 28…forever!

Share

Bildschirmfoto 2015-08-01 um 07.35.51

Sony decided to close their online store on August 28. Full info can be read here: store.sony.com. All preorders will be fulfilled but from August 28 they will no more sell Sony products on their online site. I am yet not 100% sure but I also heard the same thing could happen in Sony European Stores soon too.

The reason for that is that Sony changed their sales strategy. They made big partnerships with major retailers and they feel it’s best for them to sell the products through them. I am not sure if that is a wise decision. But I certainly am not a marketing guy.

Speculation: Next 85mm f/1.4 G lens to be trimmed for bokeh like the Minolta STF lens?

Share

[shoplink 38557 ebay][/shoplink]

The Sony 135mm f/2.8 STF lens[/shoplink] (image Photozone).

One source told us the next Sony 85mm f/1.4 FE lens will be trimmed for extreme bokeh. So let me speculate a bit: It may be possible that this will be the first Sony STF lens after the [shoplink 38557 ebay]135mm f/2.8 STF (here on eBay)[/shoplink].

Photozone explains well why this 135mm lens is so special:

The lens has a so-called apodisation optics using one APD element. APD elements resemble neutral density filters which become thicker the more you move towards the perimeter thus reducing the amount of light passing through. Out-of-focus circles are therefore (comparatively) defined in the center but are gradually loosing light towards the edges thus producing a very silky bokeh (out-of-focus blur) – the primary sense of existence of this lens.

as a result

The [shoplink 38557 ebay]Sony 135mm f/2.8 [T/4.5] STF[/shoplink] is the ultimate cream machine. Regarding the quality of its bokeh (out-of-focus blur) it outclasses all other lenses tested to date so if this is a #1 priority for you just bow to the inevitable and go for it to enjoy images as smooth as silk. That said it doesn’t stop here. The lens is extremely sharp even at max. aperture and neither vignetting, distortion nor lateral CAs are something to worry about in field conditions.

Sounds great…and expensive(!) if Sony will really make such a lens…

Newsshooter tests the A7rII with the Batis lenses.

Share

Our friends over at Newsshhooter (Click here) posted a short test of the new Sony A7rII with the Batis and Touit lenses. They were of course focused on the video performance of the camera:

I tried shooting a couple of test shots at ISO 5000 which I expected to be pretty unusable. It turns out that they were much better than I thought and you can see them at the end of the video. The high ISO performance might not match the a7S, but it is much better than several other ‘professional’ large sensor camcorders and for many people I think it will be good enough.
