New Sony A7rII is coming: What should be the improvements?

Share

A7r

The Sony A7rII specs are kept secret in Sony Japan headquarters. And while I am trying to get through that secrecy wall let us all know what you hope to get with the new A7rII. That’s my personal improvement list:
– Silent shutter mode
– “uncompressed” RAW
– Phase detection AF
– Same grip and improved button layout of the A7II
– Same 5 axis stabilization as the A7II
– Improved battery life

And you?

Brand new Sony FE 28mm lens tests!

FE28mm

We have a triple review of the new 28mm lens. The lens is already shipping in Asia (Digitalrev) and [shoplink 34726 ebay]Germany (eBay)[/shoplink]. Preorders at Amazon, Adorama, BHphoto. And Sony Germany, UK, FR, IT, ES, NL, BE, AT, CH, SE, FI, NO, PT. So let’s take a look at how good the lens is:

DSLRmagazine (google translation here) posted the full FE 28mm lens review:

– There is significant Vignetting and Distortion on RAW files. JPG files are very well corrected.
– Reliable and relatively fast autofocusing
– Extraordinary anti flare resistance
– Tonal range and detail are excellent
– High resolution in the center. It’s ok in the corner
– Overall this is a very good lens for the price even if relies heavily on in camera correction fo Vignetting and Distortion.

DR.F0x posted a lens review on Deviantart. And in very short these are his key findings:

This build of this lens is great with full metal. At minimum focus distance and wide open (F2), the sharpness is acceptable, which is not as sharp as the SEL 50mm f/1.8. Quite strong CA at wide open and it’s gone completely at f/4. At closest focus distance, the bokeh is smooth, but at longer distance, it’s not very great.

Sony FE 28/2 First Impressions Review at BackgroundandBlur:

At 200 grams this lens is half the weight and a fraction of the bulk of the equivalent Nikon 28mm f/1.8G. Sony has really pulled something off here. At the price it should be a no brainer for most A7 users. Together with the Sony Zeiss FE 55/1.8, A7 users now have two fast and high quality autofocus primes for the system. An in-depth review is coming soon, after I spend some more time with this lens.

FE-24-240mm-Sony

The Spanish site DSLRmagazine (google translation here) tested the new Sony FE 24-240mm lens. Those are some of the findings:

Cons:
– I’ts slow at the tele end (f/6.3)
– It relies heavily on in camera digital correction. RAW files have to be worked out in postproduction and may look very different from the JPEG.
– The weight of the lens moves the balance towards the lens (tremor issue at handheld shooting). Keep it mind if you use it on High Megapixel camera.
PROS:
– One the good side the RAW images taken at the tele end need little adjustments.
– Absolutely no flare issues
– negligible chromatic aberrations
– Image quality is very good (particularly JPG. With RAW you may have to work a bit).

Overall the reviewer says that the lens is very good for the one goal it has been designed: Travel zoom for amateurs and enthusiasts.

To the same conclusions comes Quesabesde (google translation here). This is not a lens for those who care about ultimate image quality, this is a lens for those who want to have good quality in a light package.

(SR4) Sony “almost ready” to launch a new 50 Megapixel camera Image quality outperforms the Canon 5ds?

Share

We got rumors about two new Sony Full Frame cameras. The A7rII is rumored to come very soon while the second 50MP camera release timing is yet unclear:

1) The Sony A7rII Full Frame E-mount camera (with the same A7II 5 axis stabilization and improved autofocusing). Shipment in May-June. I am yet not sure about the sensor but so far I “believe” it uses the same or tweaked version of the current 36MP sensor. But that’s just my “feeling” and not a “rumor” coming from sources.

2)
The official Canon 5Ds competitor! A new 50 Megapixel Sony camera using a new Sony sensor (not the Canon 5ds sensor). It is yet unclear if the new 50MP camera is the long time rumored A9 PRO E-mount camera or the new A-mount camera flagship. I actually hope Sony is thinking to release both at the same time…but that’s again just a wish of mine and not a rumor.

The A7rII is rumored to come in a special April (or at last May) announcement. The second 50MP cam release date is yet unconfirmed. For now sources could nor confirm or deny if there will be also some RX and APS-C E-mount camera announcement. I can add that almost certainly we will have new 4K camcorders. More about that soon on SAR.

Some behind the scene rumors: The new Sony 50MP camera is said to “easily OUTPERFORM” the Canon 5ds camera in terms of image quality at low ISO.
