First NEX-6 book and great NEX-6 deal.
I remember the day when Sony launched the NEX-7 many of you were saying, damn, I would love that camera having less Megapixels and being cheaper. And Sony actually listened to you and made it real. If you won the camera you may be interested to know that Jerod Foster now wrote a NEX-6 book that can be preordered at Amazon (Click here).
The camera itself got a $100 discount along other NEX cameras (Click here to see the delas page). But today SAR reader Jacob found an almost unbelievable deal where you can get an additional $100 rebate. You can buy the NEX-6 for around $670 in two different kits at eBay US: Kit one (Click here) and Kit two (Click here).
Now let’s see how that new NEX-7 successor will be. Rumored to come in a few months but still working on the specs (all I know is that it has a new sensor).

4 months ago |I have to agree with Lonnie, I’m quite happy with my NEX-7 as well. without the minolta shoe we can’t put the HVLF20AM on it which is a fantastic compact flash (not worth $199 though IMO)
if you have an NEX7 right now (and enjoy it) the only real upgrade is a FF NEX with all the features the Nex7 should have had from the get go.
The NEX7 replacement will have to be seriously on the bleeding edge of technology and blow us away with some super clean high iso, much larger buffer so we can fire off more than just 11 shots at high speed and 120FPS 1080P video, and uncompressed HDMI output, WIFI and tethering and of course phase detect.
I have a feeling the new in “new sensor” will be same sensor only updated with phase detect on the sensor.

4 months ago |Funny, I’m using a HVLF20AM on my NEX6, which has an ISO shoe. Bought the flash on Ebay for $80 and a little adapter from the Sony store for $25. Works great, although it does sit 1/2″ higher than it would with a native shoe like your NEX7. Probably not a bad thing, since every bit of height is just that much more red eye prevention. I see nothing to complain about…

Hmmm
4 months ago |Realistically speaking, what do you guys think the NEX 7 update will offer?
I don’t think it will be FF. I think that will be a completely different camera.
But aside from a few bug fixes (i.e. locking up during video recording), maybe a touch screen interface (or maybe not considering the NEX 6), maybe WiFi, maybe a more flexible articulated screen (i.e. that can fold to face front), I’m not sure what else they might do.
Thoughts? (Note, I do not own a NEX 7, but I do like it)
Funny
4 months ago |If you are talking about the lock up due to heat issue I think I was fixed by the fw update.
Or it has a self timer to stop recording after 30 minutes?
I could be wrong as I dun owe a 7, I have a 6, so non issue to me.

4 months ago |Ok, here we go – What we realistically can expect from the NEX-7 successor:
- New 20 or 24MP sensor (maybe the one used in the Nikon D5200 + phase detect AF pixels)
- WiFi and App integration a’ la NEX-6 (hopefully 802.11n instead of the outdated 802.11g used in the 6)
- “new” ISO hotshoe
- Better EVF optics, but same OLED panel (assuming the A99 uses the same panel – but it seems so)
- in-body USB battery charging (hopefully with supplied separate charger)
- better placed video button
- some kind of new feature to justify the huge price leap over the 6
What will stay the same:
- video codec (AVCHD 24/60p with up to 28 Mbps – that’s still the newest AVCHD codec available and the one used in the A99 and VG900)
- Tri-Navi layout (and probably the biggest part of the other button layout)
- BAD HDMI output resolution and compression
- articulating 921k dot resolution screen
What I hope for:
- separate video mode or programmable MC modes
- improved AF (over the 6)
- improved EVF
- better video output (e.g. better downsampling from 24MP with same codec)
- audio level controls for video when using AUX microphones
- one surprising new feature (I love surprises!)

I think you are right on with what will change and what will stay the same. I do expect some AF improvement with respect to the 6. The on-sensor PDAF is a new technology so there is plenty room for improvement from one release to the next. I also suspect that the EVF will be better given that LCD/LED/OLED technology has been advancing quite a bit in resent years (pixel density, contrast ratio, etc).

4 months ago |Can agree to most of your points.
But forget about the charger for inbody charging.
I was surprised with my A99 – no prob, that it was not in the cameras retail package. But when I bought the VG99 grip, which makes inbody charging for the 3rd battery necessary (unless you like removing the grip everytime you need to charge the 3rd battery) I was p…ed off that for 300 bucks the in-body charger is not attached – you need to purchase it for another 100 bucks.
For me personally two things will be a dealmaker for upgrading 7 to 7n
-Improved MLA, so the borders will become usable
-Improved AF
-Improved Menu (customizable, Raw/extrafine setting…)

4 months ago |Do we know whether there would be a new EVF ?
Nik
4 months ago |Several RX1 reviewers commented that they felt the RX1 EVF was an update from the one that’s been standard across the NEX and Alpha lines for a while now. Maybe the same comment was made about the A99 but I didn’t read those reviews as closely. Anyways, if there is a new EVF out there, I would expect the new 7 and the new A78 to have it.
Jason
4 months ago |To which RX1 EVF are you referring? Unless I am wrong, the RX1 does not come with an external EVF standard, but you can use the accessory EVF, the same one for the NEX 5N/R. This is the same spec model which is used in the 6, 7 , 77 and 99.

4 months ago |It cannot be the same. It costs double as much.

4 months ago |Check out the specs for all cameras I mentioned and you will find they are all…wait for it…the same.

4 months ago |@Jason
The specs are the same but a few reviews I’ve read say that it seems better. One reviewer speculated that maybe the processor in the camera that is driving the EVF makes it appear different than the others. It could also be that the hotshoe interface is an improvement over the NEX accessory port and that it provides snappier performance.
All this is speculation of course and I’ve not tried the RX1 EVF so I can’t comment if seems any different to me personally.

4 months ago |@A65…
I think this is imagination taking over. The EVF cant behave any differently just because it is connected to a more expensive camera or another type of plug in. That will not affect the performance at all. It is what it is regardless of how it is connected. You can plug the same EVF into an RX1 or an NEX-5 and you get what you get, the same experience. Decato seems to think something costs twice as much as something else which I have no clue what he is referring, but the EVF produced by Sony is the same, regardless what peoples want’s are depending on which camera it is used with.
