12 months ago |wow! nearly same like 50mm F1.4 for fullframe..
Brendon
12 months ago |Yes but with the speed of 0.95 ! That’s a more than a full stop faster than f1.4.
jacek
12 months ago |(f1.4 fullframe) in terms of DoF only.
When it comes to low light performance – it’s still 0.95
viking79
12 months ago |135 Format has better high ISO, so 50 mm f/1.4 is equivalent as long as it falls within a supported ISO range of the camera.

12 months ago |No, when it comes to low light performance, f/0.95 on APS-C is not the same as f/0.95 on FF.
Given the same sensor technology, the noise in an image will be the same if the total amount of light hitting the sensor is the same – independent of sensor size. At f/0.95 on a large sensor, more light will hit the sensor.
Actually, the amount of light hitting a FF sensor through a 50/1.4 will be almost equal to the amount of light hitting an APS-C sensor through a 35/0.95.
A rule of thumb:
If the field of view is the same, and the effective aperture diameter is the same, both DOF and noise will be the same, regardless of sensor size. (Again assuming equal sensor technology, of course). The two lenses have roughly the same effective aperture diameter:
50 mm / 1.4 = 36 mm
35 mm / 0.95 = 37 mm

12 months ago |Too bad it’s 35mm focal length as it is just a bit too long. 28mm is the “proper” normal for APS-C and I sure with someone would make a superfast and moderately close focusing (30cm or so) such lens. 35 just is too narrow in too many situations.
Brendon
12 months ago |Agree. I have the 35mm Sony lens and while I love that lens to death wrt to sharpness, contrast, mfd and bokeh I can’t help but feel its a smidgen too long and if it was a bit wider it would have been really nice.
Carl
12 months ago |Well, there’s not a lot of 43mm full frame lenses out there, either. More’s the pity.
Monkey
12 months ago |Pentax FA 43 mm F/1.9 Limited is a full frame lens
Carl
12 months ago |Too bad it won’t autofocus on A-mount.
NEXfive
12 months ago |Depends on your usage. 35mm is damn perfect with APS-C when you want a totally decent perspective to make something look as natural as possible as if you can grab it. I’m using a Summicron-R for that with a Tilt-Adapter (which unfortunately is quite a heavy lens). But for that use you don’t really need f/0.95, which means comfort in situations, where you would usually prefer wider lenses, of course. So partially I agree and disagree.
Sky_walker
12 months ago |For most situations 28/35mm is better then 50mm but, for example, for portraits by far more I prefer 50mm focal length on APS-C.
Boooe
12 months ago |BS. Most fast “50 mm” lenses for FF are really about 52-58mm, same angle of view as this 35mm on APS-C
Monkey
12 months ago |Actually they are really all about 50mm – you can check their angle of views for yourself. Calling something BS like that is not polite. The lens manufacturers tried to push for 55-58mm lenses as normals a few decades ago, as they are much easier to design for SLRs, but the general public didn’t like the slightly more narrow field of view, thus 50mm as a compromise and nice round figure ended up being used.

12 months ago |When I had a Sigma 30mm f/1.4 I was always annoyed at how wide it was. 35mm vs 28mm, I’d take 35mm any day. (Also, 28mm hardly seems like a decent ‘normal’ for 1.5x APS-C. >:O)
Monkey
12 months ago |Well, 28mm provides the “proper” normal fiel of view as it’t focal length is the diagonal of the sensor (ie. the diameter of the image circle).
Of course what “feels” like the proper normal depends on the viewing distance and print size, so out longer handed friends may well prefer something a bit longer

12 months ago |Well, I am excited by the news. For once in a post I’m not spewing out vitriol about Sony’s idiotic marketing decisions. Finally, we have a F.95 to call our own! The F/.95 is not just the province of micro4/3rds any longer.
I’m sure that post following me will go on about “The razor-thin depth of field” and this lens having a zone of sharpness of a meager X centimeters. That kind of stuff misses the point of these lenses.
This is a specialized lens for only certain situations, it’s not for everybody.
Look forward to reading about the Mitakon’s bokey, build and sharpness.
Carl
12 months ago |Lets hope that bokey ain’t hokey.
Clyde
12 months ago |LOL that funny little jokey.
Arnold
12 months ago |I don’t think that it will be better than the Voigtlander 35mm f1.2,
for half a stop I prefer a better lens.
Ken Warner
12 months ago |Are these lenses really any good? They are awful cheap and they don’t look like they are well coated optics.
Is there an image quality test somewhere on the net?
Sahaja
12 months ago |I wouldn’t call €760 or $940 “awfully cheap” for a no name manual focus lens.
chris
12 months ago |The only thing this lens likely has on the Samyang 35/1.4 is size, I can live with the Samyang’s girth for 1/2 the price and top notch sharpness/rendering. For smaller size I would go with the CV 35/1.2 ver.1 which routinely sells for less than $900.
Sharpness at f0.95 is likely going to be very poor, like the CV 17/25mm lenses in m43, so you’ll have to stop down to 1.4 or 1.8 just to get a usable image.
viking79
12 months ago |The Samyang 35 mm f/1.4 is a great lens on the Nikon 135 format cameras, but you wouldn’t find me using that huge beast on a NEX. A Cosina Voigtlander 35 mm f/1.4 is about the same price and much more reasonably size.
obican
12 months ago |Actually, a (very rare) CV 35/1.7 is even better since it gives a much more pleasant and beautiful image than the f/1.4 version. 35/1.1 also gives very beautiful results to look at, but it’s a bit on the larger/heavier/more expensive side.
Twaddler Belafonte
12 months ago |Every time you say 135 I want to slap you.
Sounds very snobbish. Outdated, it is.
Don
12 months ago |Does it autofocus?
FMJ
12 months ago |the last pic shows the aperture blade isn’t that round, so Bokeh won’t be that appealing?
J
12 months ago |I noticed that too; however, there is more to it than just the shape of the blades. The legendary beercan as well as some of the more esteemed Minolta lenses have a hex shape.
Bill
12 months ago |Plus, wide open the blade shape does not matter. Actually all the blade shape does is change the shape of highlight circles. It does not affect the smoothness or other aspects much, that is more from the how the lens optics are designed.
Carl
12 months ago |The Minolta 85mm f2 had five.
Ferdinand
12 months ago |For such a price I would rather buy a Zeiss 24mm with excellent autofocus. I find shallow DOF counterproductive after a certain point.
pll
12 months ago |What’s with those Asian companies blatantly ripping off the Japanese, not only in design but the names as well? “Mita” was a Kyocera brand for a line of photocopiers, and Kyocera owns Contax. I thought “Noktor”/”Nokton” was bad enough.
matt
12 months ago |pll, hate to spoil the party for ya, the japanese are asian as well. Does it matter who made what or when or who copied what? They can at least make a lens…can you? You should be more grateful and say “yes sir, yes sir, three bags full” rather than finding something to complain about.
Clyde
12 months ago |Good to see any new lens for NEX. Kudos to Mitakon. Should be very appealing to vidtogs.
I am somewhat perplexed however, that lenses such as this don’t have double the aperture blades with circular design. That’s one of the benefits that preset manual diaphragm lenses can laud over auto everything lenses.
At the price listed for a non AF with no auto aperture linkage, it could be 13 rounded blades (or more) found on old cheap Russian lenses like this:

Bill
12 months ago |Not to nit pick, but why not f/1 instead of 0.95, does 0.95 just seem cooler?
Clyde
12 months ago |It’s the difference between 10fps and 12fps. The marketing of such a difference provides more benefit to the manufacturer than the actual user. Bragging points = free PR.
Marek
12 months ago |MF lens = very small market.
NEXfive
12 months ago |Not true, since E-Mount is also NEX-VG10/20 & FS100/700 plus those videographers using stills cameras, which is quite a big market already even without photographers using manual lenses as I do frequently.
For those preferring AutoFocus at the moment there are 10 lenses from Sony, Sigma & Tamron plus two Sony Converters from 10 to 210mm (unfortunately not all of them really available at the moment) including 16, 19, 24, 30 & 50mm primes and all zooms have got OSS plus there’s a quality pancake zoom expected for photokina – that’s quite something to fill a bag, I think. If you need more, you should consider joining the professionals with full frame or migrate towards the MFT, since that’s a group of manufacturers’ standard therefore offering more lenses than Sony does.
BTW the Mitakon looks very nicely built, quite curious about future reviews, nevertheless I doubt I’ll ever buy this probably not light weight lens…
Boooe
12 months ago |Until autofocus gets significantly smarter, we won’t see any AF lens as fast as this one. Big lens elements = unwieldy for CDAF to hunt

looks quite good in term of the price. ¥5968 is like $940. Hope the IQ is similar to the SLR Magic Cine T.95

12 months ago |Interesting…, but…, ADMIN–IS THERE ANY NEWS ABOUT WHEN THE PANCAKE 16-50 G SERIES MIGHT BECOME AVAILABLE AND AT WHAT COST???
NEXfive
12 months ago |Well, first answer is easy to guess: http://www.photokina-cologne.com
Twaddler Belafonte

12 months ago |Why aren’t any of these lenses available for the Alpha mount????
Maniatiko
12 months ago |I´ve always asked myself this too, Nex is getting tons of interesting and sweet lenses, why not also for alpha mount? I would really dig this lens T_T
Rooru S.
12 months ago |Hey, you already have good Rokinon lenses available and many Zeiss lenses. NEX is always being attacked by the lack of lenses
Booe
12 months ago |f/0.95 is impossible to build for A-Mount. That is one of tradeoffs for allowing to use mirror.
Carl
12 months ago |The physical limit on air-coupled optics is around f0.3. Above that its just a matter of getting glass with a refractive index high enough and objective elements large enough in diameter to pass all that light.
With SLRs you run into issues with designing high speed retrofocus lenses, but the NEX’s microlens array don’t really encourage symmetrical wide angles either. At longer focal lengths the flange distance is largely irrelevant.
Dair
12 months ago |Without propper testing it is hard to get excited. This brand is not a guarantee of perfect lens. Might be good, might be horible. We’ll see.
alans
12 months ago |Still no 30/35mm f1.4 AF?
If there was I’d probably buy into this system but there isn’t. 24mm too wide and 50mm too long. Shame for me as I’d like something to replace my MFT set up.
NEXfive
12 months ago |You’re right, a really fast standard lens is missing plus the pancakier the better. 35mm f/1.4 would be great or f/1.8 with OSS to make it cheaper, since I don’t use the standard focal length much, so the SEL30M35 might already fill most needs here…
