(SR3) 85mm f/1.8 is an all Black lens.
I have been told there will be 5-6 new E-mount lenses announced in 2013. One of them is almost certainly the High Quality standard zoom from Zeiss. Another rumor I got (from new sources) is that there will be a 85mm f/1.8 lens and to be more specific this will be an all Black color lens.
I repeat, I still need the confirmation from my trusted sources to be almost sure (SR5) about the lens release.

Reminder (SR = Sonyrumor):
SR1=probably fake rumor
SR2=rumor from unknown sources
SR3=50% chance it is correct
SR4=rumor from known sources
SR5=almost certainly correct!

I hope Sony pays extra attention of the quality of bokeh. Sounds like it would be a ‘must have’ for me!

5 months ago |There is not such thing as stealth or descretion when youre pointing any camera at someones face or direction…that’s a myth. Black lenses and cameras dont make them look invivible..in fact black lenses and cameras make a person appear more pervy.If you want stealth, dont let someone spot you taking the picture..thats the best way..if you can do it.
Frank
5 months ago |I think the OP was merely referring to the colour, which is associated with stealth, not covert picture taking. Don’t take things so literally.

5 months ago |If all this pans out through 2013, NEX will be very compelling indeed (Assuming the lenses are of high optical quality).
Hopefully they don’t throw too much effort into FF NEX and end up with two half developed product / lens lines.

5 months ago |still waiting to find out what the “snapshop” lens is going to be. i’m hoping some sort of pancake for street photography. give me a more pocketable nex and i won’t be salivator over the $3000 rx-1 so much.

5 months ago |Now that we are having a lot more lenses…where are the damn accesories??? NEX-series is missing some bounce flash units with the ability to turn in several directions while being small and one unit just like the HVL-F20S for NEX-6 (yes I know, we have already the HVL-F20AM but that one uses the Minolta Hotshoe). Also some means of having AUDIO MIC IN jack without having to buy the 800USD XLR Unit with the NEX-6.. And if Sony doesn’t have any intention to drop the Smart Accessory Terminal Connector, then provide all the accesories I just mentioned for both SAT and Hotshoe.

5 months ago |Sony are delivery lenses and yet people still moan.
Anon
5 months ago |Only because the entire NEX series is still incredibly incomplete after several years on the market. There is LOTS to moan about!
Also — we’ll see if the lenses actually get delivered! We’ve seen rumors before. There are two more stages that have to happen: 1) ACTUAL announcements, and 2) ACTUAL delivery!

5 months ago |It hasn’t been “several years”. It’s been just barely 2.5 years. There’s 14 native lenses for NEX. 3 more Zeiss are on the way. Plus there is countless thousands of others lenses that can work via adapters. Why don’t you do better. Create a camera and offer more than 14 lenses in 2.5 years. Canon, Fuji, and Nikon are unlikely to offer more lens options by their 2.5 year mark; Cut Sony some slack, so far most everything they’ve released has been right up my alley for what I’d use. If Sony does come out with an 85/1.8 I just might sell my 50mm and pick that up as well as the 35/1.8.

5 months ago |I would really like a lightweight 300mm prime. If it was less than 24 ounces f5.6 would be fine but I would want it to be sharp wide open and optically stabilized. Bonus points if it could collapse to save space when not in use.
I suspect this post will be followed by several with people asking for f4.0 or 2.8 versions but those would be way too big, heavy and expensive. A 2.5 pound, $1200 f4.0 version might make some sense for a NEX body but if anyone really needs a 6 pound, $8000 f2.8 the additional cost of a SLT body to go with it will not add that much weight or cost.

5 months ago |The news are heavy from mount fuji these days. It seems to be that Sony has sold the PDAF sensor tech to Fuji as well and, impressively enough, Fuji has managed to make great use of it by simulating split screen focusing on it. Also, as it appears to be, their AF speed has come close to NEX speed.
Those are, however, small news compared to the rather beefy 36mb/s video. If the codec is implemented well, this should force Sony to also beef up its a99, RX1 and next NEX cameras video capabilities. This is, after all, one of those cards Sony wants to play right?
Lenses are good, as we all know, but NEX has to compete better with the Xtrans quality because frankly, Fuji is ironing the wrinkles of AF speed and reliability (or so it seems)

5 months ago |Are these 5-6 lenses just Sony releases or including the three Zeiss-made X-mount/E-mount primes as well?
A potential Z-branded 16-80 doesn’t really suit my tastes because it will by necessity of size be slower. I’d prefer a 16-50 constant 2.8 or 2.8-4, which I hope is still on the roadmap!

5 months ago |I have to wonder how this will compare to the Rokinon 85 cine which is also fairly short, but also full frame compatible, and faster f/1.5.
Yes, f/1.4 would be bigger size, but if you’re doing portrait work, it doesn’t exactly need to fit in your pocket. At some point, Sony will have to introduce NEX lenses with full frame coverage. This could be a good start since the 35 1.8 wasn’t done that way.

5 months ago |The big problem for me will come when they release a FF nex.
Then none of my current lenses will work on it.
And then what? Starting to collect lenses again….????
I think they should do all current expensive lenses to be FF – like the Zeiss 24mm 1.8, the new mid range Zeiss zoom, this 85mm 1.8, etc.
So when they start selling FF – we have few lenses to start with.
I hope they get that decision about the FF camera soon, so we can make ours too.

5 months ago |You can still use the existing e mount lens on a fullframe NEX if that future camera continues to use e-mount. Just like the way apsc lens works on the A99. The camera should automatically go into crop mode.

5 months ago |Such a weird focal length for an APS camera. Perfect for a FF portrait lens. Perfect APS portrait lens would be a fast 60mm lens. A 50mm is too short for a head shot on APS because it distorts the features. It is like they have all these old FF lens formulas and they cannot be bothered to adjust them even for their wonderful APS only camera system. The 85mm is almost equivalent to the old FF 135mm length that was so unpopular they were dropped from many systems. Too long for portrait because it flattened the features and too short to be a useful telephoto.
Frank
5 months ago |Nonsense. 50mm (75mm equiv) on APS-C is fine for head and shoulder portraiture. You aren’t using a 50mm properly if you can see distortion.
waldomarek
5 months ago |hey, a question from a photography newbie:
i keep hearing that this focal length and that focal length for portraits and i don’t seem to get a conclusion which focal length is best. some say it’s 50, some say it’s 100+ with a zoom lens.
so, what’s the best focal length for portraits? is that for the head + shoulders or also for the body as well? personally, i’m more interested in whole body photography, i’d be thankful if you could help me with a useful link or something. thanks!
alphabart
5 months ago |@waldomarek: There is no perfect focal lenth for portraits. All depends of the setting and users preference. A range between 50mm to 200mm is mostly used. 35 can also be just fine but everything below 50mm has a tendancy to deform when close to the subject, resulting in for example an extremely big nose and small head. But even that can be used for portraits is you want funny portraits. So It’s basically all up to you.
waldomarek
5 months ago |i see, thanks a lot. so, for full body portraits, even a 35mm can be fine and not deform (too much?) because you are not close to your subject?
Frank
5 months ago |waldomarek, at 35mm (52.5mm equiv) for a full length body shot you will not be close enough to get distortion. You’ll have to stand back a fair distance from the subject to get them into the frame without completely filling it.
The thing to do is set your zoom lens to 35mm and 50mm, see which you prefer, but don’t get too close. For head and shoulder I use the 50mm f1.4 and for everything else, the 16-50mm f2.8. With plenty of space I’ve even used the 70-210mm f4 beercan and Tamron 90mm f2.8 macro!
There are no “rules” just guidelines that will help give you distortion free images (no long noses!) with nice bokeh (i.e nice background blur).
Get yourself onto Dyxum forums for help and advice.
waldomarek
5 months ago |thanks for the advice both, i will check out the forum when i have time.
one more final question: with 35mm i actually meant 35 “FF”, to be precise, i meant the 24mm zeiss lens after a 1.5 crop factor (which yields a 36mm actually). so from what i understood, the 24mm zeiss, when standing far away from your subject for a full body shot, it will not give bodily distortion? but if i get closer to my subject to shoot the face/shoulder, it will?
Pablo
5 months ago |And I hope they make it FF, so it works on the FF NEX too. And don’t bitch about the “large size” of a FF version. The Zuiko 85/2 is perfectly small, light and sharp!
spaceman
5 months ago |True, that the Zuiko 85/2 is nice and small, but it does not have internal focussing, AF nor OSS. Still, here’s hoping for the SEL85/1.8 to be small

5 months ago |Seriously lacking in Sony line up of lenses is a fast telephoto lenses. Sony has better build quality, cleaner ISO than the Lumix Micro FT, but Panasonic is fast-tracking a 42mm f1.2 (!) and a 150mm f2.8 prime lenses. Panasonic seems to know what a pro/semi Pro wants from their gear. Sony needs to catch up a little bit. And Sony needs faster lenses in their RX cameras too. Fuji just released a 28-112mm f2.0-2.8. Olympus & Panasonic have f2.5 or f2.8 at the telephoto ends of their large sensor compacts.
John
5 months ago |Sony’s doing better with primes but they need a few more, at least to keep some current users (like myself) from jumping ship to the EM-5:
1. A quality wide prime (16mm): Something to compete with the Oly 12/2. What they should do is release a much better 16mm, with a faster aperture (f/2), with OSS, that’s compatible with the existing wide angle and fisheye converters. The current 16mm pancake is kind of a joke, as was Oly’s 17/2.8, but at least Oly had the sense to release a better 17/1.8.
2. A more affordable and smaller 23/24mm: The Zeiss 24mm is just too expensive, large and lacking OSS. People who want the 35mm FOV will be steered towards the OM-D and 17/1.8 or X100/S for the size or price.
3. A quality macro. Longer than the 30mm and better quality.
4. A smaller (or black) 50mm. The Oly 45mm is a real trump card for M43 for street photographers because of its size and sharpness. The current Sony 50 isn’t a large lens by any means, but it’s much less discreet. At least offer it in black!
