(SR5) NEX-7 leaked image is a real prototype (Don’t get confused because of the “NO” button!)

I have been assured by some of my trusted sources that the NEX-7 image leaked last week is a picture of a real NEX-7 prototype! It’s a very early “stage” image and you should not get confused because of that “NO” button. This was made intentionally to mark the fact that it is a prototype. But keep in mind that this is not the image of the final production version. There could be still some small changes! Reminder, I am 100% certain the NEX-7 has a Fuji X100 (Click here to see that camera) style (built-in viewfinder). It has 24 Megapixel sensor and a 3 million dot OLED EVF. The camera should cost around $1.200.
Mark explanation:
1) 3 Million dot OLED EVF
2) Hot shoe
3) 24mm f/1.8 ZEISS
4) Flash and the Image preview buttons
5) Pop-Up flash
6) Manual Aperture and Shutter Speed controls?
7) ???
8) ???
Reminder (SR = Sonyrumor):
SR1=probably fake rumor
SR2=rumor from unknown sources
SR3=50% chance it is correct
SR4=rumor from known sources (60-80% the rumor is correct)
SR5=almost certainly correct!

For “#6″ in the image, maybe one dial is for aperture/ss and the other is the mode dial? The button on the front by the shutter button could be the “toggle” between Ap & SS.
Don Cox
2 years ago |“For “#6″ in the image, maybe one dial is for aperture/ss and the other is the mode dial?”
I hope not. An ideal arrangement is for one to be the shutter speed and the other one the aperture, with an Auto option on each. That gives you four modes – fully auto, aperture priority, shutter priority, and fully manual.
Trick auto modes such as “Toy Camera” can be selected from the menus – they will not be much used once the novelty has worn off, I think.

2 years ago |Why not just let the user configure them? All it would take is software and can give you infinite variations just for every user. It’s about time manufacturers give us total control over the UI (I wan’t ALL buttons in a camera to be configurable, as I said, it’s just software).
Don Cox
2 years ago |“Why not just let the user configure them? All it would take is software ”
Because then there are no markings on the dials. A control knob with its markings somewhere else is very bad ergonomics.
Rachnaroch
2 years ago |And what are LCDs and EVFs for? It’s not that you can not see in both of them what your dial was set to. Unless all you care are fancy dials to enjoy looking at them. What I find rather useless. See, cameras like the X100 are beautiful and all, but I would spend my time looking through the viewfinder or at the back LCD, and having to look at a wheel or dial on top would be a complete waste of space and my time. Which is one of the reasons top LCDs are disappearing too. This is 2011. I want a 2011 UI. I don’t want a UI from 50 years ago. I don’t collect cameras.
kevin2i
2 years ago |haha, the “50-year old” UI is superior and faster to the consumer gadget style of camera. Aperture on lens, shutter on a dial is still the best solution. Cost cutting has led to lenses without aperture rings, not UI designers.
Dedicated controls for the important things (aperture, shutter speed, iso, a/f) make a camera easier/faster to use.
SRL
2 years ago |Yes, $1,200 is the price of a CZ (Zeiss) 24/f2.8 lens
What! you expect that a NEX7 with come with a lens like that at no charge
Seriously, a high quality lens like a Sony Zeiss is not cheap if it’s made to the same standards that have made the product line great.
Now, maybe a kit lens and Nex7 for a price lake that.
Maybe,
I did a quick look at the B & H website at 24mm lenses to see what the price range is:
I found 17 lenses selling as low as $350.00 USD for a Canon 24 f/2.8 kit lens to over $2,000 USD for a Nikon 24 f/1.4
Lenses aren’t cheap
And the high quality fast wide and sharp 24mm lens will cost you real money.

2 years ago |Yeah, calling it a NO-Button to mark it as a prototype makes absolutly sense, oh wait it does not, cause no body who doesn’t know its a prototype gets to see this pictures anyway and the 1.8 on the lense makes no sense too. Same goes for the poorly shopped in movie button.
And no proper hotshoe for the “Pro” NEX doesnt make sense either.

2 years ago |I still think that this is 100% wishful thinking. Come on, hot shoe? Why did they make that proprietary connector then? 24mm 1.8 – at this size, seriously? and a popup flash at this class? what for?
Anonymous
2 years ago |I don’t think it’s that hard to believe that this is what the NEX-7 looks like. Remember that the CZ was originally a 24/1.8 but it’s now be redesigned to a 24/2 and a pancake. The NEX-7 in this image could of been made at the time before the redesign of the pancake, so it could be entirely different too. Well the a700 had a pop up, what’s wrong with that?
However you are right about the proprietary connector in the NEX-3/5/3C. That’s really really odd that they’ve replaced it with the Minolta hotshoe. Maybe they’ll include a Minolta hotshoe to NEX connector adapter? Heh, maybe you can use NEX flashes on the Sony Alpha Line SLT/DSLR’s as well.
Melotron
2 years ago |Good thing they decided to make the 24 into a pancake. f2 is plenty for the NEXs, don’t need to go to f1.8, making it, hopefully, much smaller.
Jinx

It is indeed proprietary and specific to Sony/Minolta, if I’m not mistaken. But at least it should allow existing accessories, unlike the weird screw thing on current Nex…

Perhaps some people here have not done much 3D modelling or CAD work, and don’t realise how easy it is to make such an error. As this render is probably only one of dozens made during the design process, the “ON” hardly matters. The idea is to suggest a layout for discussion, not to produce a perfect render of a finished product.

SRL
2 years ago |Yes, we keep hearing that Sony is developing lenses
but is Sony going to ship these lenses we keep hearing about?
Sony has shown the same 500mm /f4.0 A-mount telephoto lens at shows for several years now and tells us that it will ship soon but it never does.
There was many rumors that Sony would be shipping 4 new Zeiss A-mounts by the end of this year and several other lenses possibly G series too.
All delayed likely because of the terrible event that hit the good people of Japan only a few months ago.
It would be nice thing if Sony would go forward and at least tell us what is planned to be released.
Don Cox
2 years ago |What I do hope is that the aperture and speed dials (if that is what they are) have firm click positions and are not easily turned by accident.
It would be annoying to find that you have taken several photos at a one second shutter speed when you had set the dial to Auto.

2 years ago |i don’t think the rtm model will have that hot shoe, it’s a nex, so the hot shoe must be as same as the nex3 and nex5, the reason is simple, they are the same series. i think this model is just used for test the sensor, the software(firmware)……
redfern
2 years ago |You might be right, but really there is no reason not to use the Minolta hot shoe on this model. If it has a pop-up flash, you will not need to use the dinky NEX accessory flash. It has a built-in VF, so you don’t need to attach one of those. And the Minolta hot shoe accommodates an accessory microphone, so you can just use that one. To my knowledge, there aren’t any NEX accessories that aren’t either already built in to this camera or available in a Minolta hot shoe equivalent.
Besides, the Minolta hot shoe is a lot more robust than the tiny screw-in port on the NEX. I can’t ever see adding a professional flash on to that tiny port, as it’s too small and fragile. Since this is a higher grade of camera, people might expect the ability to use larger and more powerful flashes, and the Minolta show just makes sense for that.

2 years ago |So I was right (here) expecting this to be an early draft, but in that case it isn’t really leaked and more active SONY marketing to heat up discussions.
Anyway I don’t like the retro grip and viewfinder, the proprietary hot shoe and ugly buttons like number 8. I might like these controls numbered 6 depending on their use, but this gadget does not like like something really topping the current NEX-5…
Nico
2 years ago |As an “early prototype”, the final product (if there is one at the moment…) may be very different !
If the buttons number 8 are dials for selecting mode and the other one for aperture/speed or iso… depending on mode selected, it’d be great ! With a hotshoe mount and better sensor performance, it ‘d be already a big Nex-5 improvement !!
And make it FF, PLEASE PLEASE !

2 years ago |I just hope that the hotshoe makes the cut. The lack of a real hotshoe in the NEX-3/5 is a real annoyance as it means that the camera can’t be connected to studio lights for my camera club’s model nights or anything else. With a Minolta/Alpha-style hotshoe, at least PC sync adapters and Minolta->ISO hotshoe adapters become available…

2 years ago |If the NEX-7 does indeed have an X100 style hybrid optical/electronic viewfinder, how is it going to work with zoom lenses or any other lens other than a standard focal length?
Does the viewfinder zoom?
Does it have automatically adjusting crop marks?
How is that going to work with those giant NEX lenses sticking out next to it. It seems that even that 24mm lens would block half of the OVF view.
I’m still pretty certain that if it has a viewfinder, it’ll be electronic only.

2 years ago |I would like to see those #6 buttons/wheels to pop out when pushing them. So
Button inside camera -> auto aperture/shutter
Button popped out -> manual aperture/shutter
Don Cox
2 years ago |“Button inside camera -> auto aperture/shutter
Button popped out -> manual aperture/shutter”
That only gives you two options. Putting A on the both the shutter and the aperture dials gives you four. Look at the Leica X1 – this is how exposure controls should be.
The disadvantage of hardware controls as opposed to doing everything on a screen is that hardware costs more. But it’s worth it. I would happily pay an extra $100 for good speed and aperture controls. (Which is about what they would cost, retail.)

Can’t see it being manual shutter/aperture. If it actually had two seperate dials like this it would already have an advantage over current 7/9 series cameras. It’s just a shame that the A77 seems to have taken a step backwards in ergonomics, but we shall see I guess…

according the images, that seems this camera has metering switch (8) and the a77 dont have it…
Therefore, I prefer this NEX7
redfern
2 years ago |I’m not so sure that’s a metering switch. It looks to be labeled AF and MF on it.
Also, remember this is an early prototype rendering. Even the original mockups of the A700 replacement showed a metering switch that we now know will not be there:

That being said, I agree that this is a great looking design. I can’t wait to try one.

2 years ago |Maybe, like the X100, the NEX-7 will have an EVF that projects from the side into a prism that directs it out the eyepiece? That way, Sony can have a more “rangefinder” like top plate with the eyepiece on the side, rather than the usual EVF hump.

Or is there some improvement coming to the improved speed of AF with Contrast Detection I didn’t notice till now?
