(SR5) Sony revolution part two: 4 completely new Alphas to be unveiled on late August!

Yes I know, since the Sony NEX camera announcement we didn’t post a lot of Alpha camera news and rumors. But this is about to change! Many of our readers complained Sony because they were lacking behind Canon in the DSLR segment. Good High-ISO performance, video recording are two of the most requested new features for future Sony Alpha cameras. Today SonyAlphaRumors can bring you the good news that Sony will soon unveil the second revolution (after the NEX announcement it’s time for the DSLR cameras!)
There will be a very important press release by end of August (should be between 23 and 31 of August…we don’t know the exact data yet).
1) Sony will introduce the two “translucent” cameras, the A55 (16MPX) and A33 (14MPX) -> (ultra fast autofocus during videorecording, very fast fps)
2) Sony will introduce two new Sony A5xx cameras with ExmorHD sensor. The higher-level camera will also be able to take 3D pictures (and it comes with GPS)
3) Many new lenses. Many current kit-lenses will be updated. The new Zeiss 24mm f/2.0 and Sony 500mm beast will finally come to market.
4) New NEX accessories are expected to be announced (electronic viewfinder???)
More about that cameras and lenses will be published on SonyAlphaRumros during the next days and weeks…so keep following us! (on Facebook or/and Twitter or/and RSS feed
For those of you waiting for the A7xx, A850/A900 firmware upgrade and new Fullframe cameras. Sony seems to feel your pressure and they are working to release them sooner than expected. But I don’t believe you will see the A7xx or new Fullframe camera at Photokina. The firmware upgrade is another story, I hope they will manage it to solve the programming issue which is the cause of the delay.
I know guys, Sony is sometimes very slow in releasing good products but I do believe that all those cameras will bring real and big tecnology improvements!
One more thing -> To make our site grow and become better we need your little help:
1) Send us rumors and news
We are getting closer to Photokina! When you find interesting news-rumors-reviews that we didn’t post help us and send us the link to sonyalpharumors@gmail.com.
We can keep you anonymous of course. If you want to feel safe when sending rumors you can also use the contact form on the right sidebar. It doesn’t store your IP-address and you can avoid to give me your name and email.
2) Link to us
Many websites do copy rumor/news without linking to us. I already saw 3-4 website which do claim that a certain rumor is from their sources but in fact they are “stealing” the rumor from SonyAlphaRumors. So please link to us ![]()
3) Help us to cover our server and redesign costs
If all works fine in less than one month we will have a new designed website (we hired a designer for that) + Every mount we have a small ammount of server costs to cover. We do not ask you for donations. The best way to help us is by using our links to amazon-adorama or bhphoto (or redcoon-pixmania if you are located in Europe) when you do shopping. Once you click on them and buy something (it doesn’t matter what) we get a small commission for it and you do not pay any penny more!
If you often shop in Amazon US or BHphoto you can bookmark following link:
http://www.amazon.com/
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/?BI=4499&KBID=4968
When you click on the link to shop you know you will support us ![]()
If you are from other countries just click on the shop logo you see on the right sidebar. Those are all our affiliates!

i almost got excited about a 35mm zeiss
)) but jk aside i hope they do released some much needed lenses and update some lenses who aren’t really good enough as their price suggest, and also i hope they would leave out SAM or make it better cause right now screw drive lenses are better at focusing than SAM even on low end bodies.
a little type, it’s the 24mm zeiss f/2
the a55 and a33 sound very interesting, if they have blazing fast and accurate autofocus when they take pics too, they are serious cameras for sports.
as for the nex accessories, that is probably a no brainer for sony since the nex is their best selling camera, namely the nex-5.

I would expect the complete opposite of your thoughts.
In that being the cheaper lenses all get SAM upgrade.
It is clear that SSM and SAM are the future.
In the past we thought that is only to save some costs in the low end bodies and maybe because C&N do the same thing.
But with NEX on the field, motorized lenses will be needed.
And it is even possible that Sony has trouble with AF for the E->A adapter because how the current SAM lenses are designed.
Meaning that an improved SAM version will find the way to those lenses.
Let’s hope for more silent motor at least ;o)
PS:
I don’t think Sony’s lenses are overpriced.
Not cheap either.
C&N lenses don’t come cheaper.
Esp. not the “not so old” ones.
You can argue about in lens IS but that will be endless discussion^^

take the 100mm macro for instance and there are a few others, like the 35mm f/1.4 which is a very old design 1980 i think which is on par with canon’s 35mm f/1.4 regarding price, optically is a bit inferior although it has a floating element.
SAM is currently not a good micro motor for lenses, it’s worse than screw drive, i said they should make it better or just leave it out completely and only focus on making SSM better. nikon and canon can incorporate SSM in their low end lenses, though canon has 2 versions of it’s USM motor ring type and micro, so why sony can’t just incorporate SSM in low end lenses also… well they tried with SAM, but as i said before and how many said before the current version of SAM is not that good.
some sony lenses are overpriced
ps: i rather have a faster version of the SAM than s quieter one, but i would rather have both ^^

2 years ago |I wonder if the marketing name “translucent” is going to catch on? and be understood by the consumer what pellix cameras really are?
New lens would be great, although the 24 and 500 are not on my shopping list. I’d rather have the 24mm be f1.4, f2.0 seems to be not a big enough jump from the 24-70mm f2.8 I already have. Upgrading the zeiss primes to SSM would be great, considering the push to mirrorless.
For me, I dont care about the a7xx cause I got an a850 and am looking for the next generation full frame as my second body maybe in a year from now, so I can wait. But I understand the a700 people, 2007 was a long time ago, in a galaxy far far away…

for starter, u will notice how SSM jacks the price up (so is USM and other SSM lenses) and the SAM do not. its’s practically free into SAM lens body. and not everyone can afford the SSM version of 50mm or 11-16 SSM, LOL but i just hope sony would install a gear into SAM lens so user can choose between SAM or body drive. SAM is not that bad, its just like the other average built in motor for nikon/canon kitlens.

2 years ago |No A7xx at Photokina will mean a mass move to Canikon. As an A700 user with a heavy investment in lenses I need to know that my glass and the system are safe. Most serious users on the big alpha forums have said that if Sony does not launch A7xx at Photokina it’s time to sell up and move on. I will be moving to Canon 7D.

canon and nikon have ultrasonic motors in their cheap lenses also not only in the expensive ones. how can nikon make a 35mm f/1.8 with af-s and sell it for 200$ , sure without af-s i would expect in to be like 30 to 50 $ cheaper but it’s worth the price, instead SAM costs maybe half of that but is way worse.

Who knows what stunt they will pull in the future with regard to actually meeting the needs of their Alpha users?

2 years ago |Sony, the A700 replacement should be your number 1 priority. Canon has the 7D, Nikon has the D300s, Pentax has the K7 but you have nothing in the prosumer APS-C segment. Release the damn A7XX. How hard is it? All the other companies manage it. This is really getting beyond a joke.

2 years ago |always the same damn complaint… why complain? just change systems already. I am tired of people complaining to sony, go change systems and complain to canon or nikon.
the a7xx is in development because they would rather have a finished product on the market not do it like canon, and release it full of bugs and trying it to mend it via firmwares.
the a850 and a900 don’t need firmware updates because they are finished products, maybe only a firmware update for noise control, but if you are serious about your photography, you would shoot raw and post-process the photos to get rid of noise. you should have known what you were getting into when you bough a sony, if you didn’t the tough luck you are finding out. Sony wants to establish itself on the market by gaining market sharet and slowly but surely attract enthusiasts and professionals, to get market share you need low end cameras not 1500$+ cameras.
If you can’t wait for it then go for it. Personally i want a lot of things from sony to come, but i don’t bitch about it in every damn rumor topic, i can only wait and see what happens and reassess my need according to the things each system offers, so far sony meets, or will meet my need in a few years time.

Not so easy when you have a heavy investment in glass my friend. Changing a camera is easy, changing a system – £3000 worth of lenses, £1000 worth of flash guns and battery grips is a different matter!

2 years ago |Just to put into perspective the people using canon have been waiting almost the exact same time for an update on their beloved 1Ds Mark III. So keep your pants on. And besides, I think sony has been pretty innovative recently with the pellix, nex, vg10, etc. If you wanna go, go, and sell us your lens cheap! And then what, next year when sony comes out with something better than canon or nikon, will youl sell all their lens and come back, switching companies every couple years?

2 years ago |Myst – Sony marketing must love people like you. Satisfied with mediocrity. So you would rather Sony keep developing the A7XX so they release a finished product unlike Canon. Firstly the A700 was announced September 2007 so I think 3 years is plenty of development time for a replacement. Regarding Canon and its bugs. What is wrong with the Canon 7D and where are all its bugs? Have you actually used one?

sony is a gamble and people should have known that, if you want established names in the market you go for canon or nikon, sony is a wild-card anything can happen.
Lenses and not that hard to sell for a good price, flashes are a bit tougher to sell but you can get decent prices for them also.
There is the a850 alternative which is affordable
so i don’t see what the fuss is all about, why do people complain here? it’s not like sony is checking this site for opinions.
@James
many people complained about canon’s 7d and their rush to released it.
you don’t know me, you don’t know what i want. Where did i say i was satisfied with mediocrity? you have no idea how demanding i am, but i also understand it’s hard to make something, you can’t just snap your fingers and it magically happens, and it takes time to make a good product but some people just ignore that cause it’s easier and start bitching about it.
Mediocrity is releasing a product faster to not lose market share instead of trying to make it better and without bugs, that’s what people like you apparently expect from sony.
Sony probably knows all eyes are watching them regarding the a7xx and know a mistake can be a huge blow to their market share. All in all i rather have a good camera a bit later than a bad one earlier, you want the opposite, now who of us like mediocrity?

I can imagine a lot of you sitting there looking at your cameras and wishing you had something better day after day never picking it up to actually learn how to use it correctly. Sad world we live in where so many think gear is what makes great images and that gear needs to be replaced every year.
If you want to complain about what Sony does or doesn’t do there is a whole site created for that very thing, something like alphabitchersworld or something, ran by some sorry ass hack that thinks p&s ricohs are cool and IR is the bees knees.

With all the bitrate details aside,

24fps not a newly developed gimmick
24fps is a standard used from some silent films & sound films.

You compare A7xx and 1Ds mk IV ?
1)
The A700 is hard to find (not impossible I know butr I still count this).
If you are a professional and need to use the A700 but it dies you are screwed.
Well of cause you can use a A900.
But when your work does not require the quality of A900 over A700 you are actually throwing away money (that what the A900 cost more till it breaks).
The 1Ds is a different class of camera and different people are using it – no question.
But if they break it, they can easily get a new one.
And more easy they should be able to rent one easily till their new bought one arrives!
So the wish for an upgrade is just the neggeling about what could be improved.
And there is no camera that can’t be improved…
2)
The A700 is (or was at least) in the class of enthusiast photographers.
There is nothing for the A-Mount that can people get right now in this area.
A550 does not have the usability.
And A850 not the fps and for sure not the price (count in APS-C lenses as well)
3)
Canon 1Ds is in the pro class of DSLR.
Longer lifetimes are normal there.
Small sales numbers have to regather big investments for R&D.
Also as long as Nikon is not releasing a super leading camera why should Canon rush?
It’s only them both up there.

A700 is just fine for now. I and most a700 users will not buy upgrade this year anyway except nex or full frame. No reason to rush and deliver 40d style of failure.
I hope too new a550 has two dials and looks more like d90. This is important imho more then new ultra expensive a700 (recall a700 launch price before posting more non sense)

2 years ago |Has anybody tried using high ISO noise reduction in Lightroom 3? I am curious to know if it can clean up my A700 images at ISO 3200 well enough for some keepers. I regularly shoot at events using ISO 1600-2000, so it is clear that the next generation sensor and Bionz processor will do well at least through 6400 on the APS-C sensor. Until then, my trusty A700 and new NEX-5 will handle all of my needs just fine.
Anyone know how to use the Auto HDR function on NEX-5? It always shows as unselectable. Also, I take it there is no Exposure lock function…? Been spoiled by the A700 controls, but I can get used to it, considering the size/weight reduction. I originally purchased the E-P2 earlier this year. Upon hearing about the NEX cameras, I immediately returned the Olympus. With the exception of being able to use my radio flash trigger (to trigger F58 flashes) on the Olympus, I don’t regret the decision.

2 years ago |@Thundercats : AutoHDR on the NEX 5 can only be activated if you shoot in JPEG only mode (not even JPG + RAW). It’s a pretty dumb quirk to have but there you go. It’s similar to the function on the A5xx class cameras, BTW.
LR 3 cleans up my high ISO images pretty nicely from the A550 (certainly better than LR 2), but I try not to venture beyond 1600 in any case.
TBH, A7xx news isn’t going to excite me all that much. The fact is, yes, the A700 had the classic design which was real nice to handle, but in pretty much all other features, the A5xx class provides more versatile shooting and better technical quality. I understand the sentiments of current owners of the A700, however, in regards to not being willing to look into “lower class” options based on model numbers.
That said, comments like “the A7xx is for enthusiasts” seems to tie skill level to equipment, which is not something I would agree with. People determine skill levels, not gear. I’ve seen rich newbies running around with 5D MkII and L lenses, and equally, pro photojournalists using consumer-grade obsolete compact P&S cameras for their work.
John
2 years ago |the lowest end A300 etc wouldn’t be very well matched to any larger more versatile lens. The 500 series have live view autofocus at the expense of fundamentally compromised viewfinders. The A850 to A900 is too expensive and incompatible with existing lenses.
I Imagine many people with A700s are In this situation. The comments come because of nerves. Video and live view will most likely be in the A7XX but if it is in the same janky way as the 500 series it takes one of the bigger advantages higher end cameras have which is better/ bigger viewfinders.
Given the Market segement the A700 is meant to fill I wouldn’t expect an anouncement till Nikon anounces it’s full successor to the D300.

Quote: “What I find interesting is a comment from someone on another site. He said that in the time of film SLR’s the high-end models would be upgraded every 8 years or so. Now in the digital age people are moaning and whining if it doesn’t happen within 4 years.”
The upgrade time may have been 8 years, but what was not the case was that the previous model was discontinued after 5 years so that for 3 years the previous could not be bought. I have a Minolta Dynax 7 and want to move to digital, but the model that probably best fits my needs was discontinued almost 12 months ago.
My current options are the consumer A550 (Sony UK price £689) or the top of the range A850 (Sony UK price £2,199). The gap in the price range is more than twice the cost of the A550. If Minolta had still been selling Alpha mount cameras, would they not have had two cameras filling that chasm in the price range at say £1000 for a top of the range APS-C camera and £1500 for an entry level FF camera?
JaccoW
2 years ago |@Jonathan: True, that pricegap by discontinuing the A700 was a bad move on Sony’s part.
My point is however that they chose to shut down production, not realising many people love and depend on that camera and they misjudged the alternatives.
They realised their mistake after a lot of complaints and have sped up the development proces.
Any more complaining will not help and just annoys other people.
