A7sIII now listed at BHphoto and in Germany at Fotokoch

Sony A7sIII will be the first mirrorless system camera to support CFexpress Type A cards!

A couple of days ago I got an odd rumor about the A7sIII card slot types and finally today I got the definitive answer:

The Sony A7sIII will be the first camera to use the new CFexpress Type A cards. The cool thing is that the two slot camera will be capable to use two kind of cards in the same slot: SD cards and CFexpress Type A cards.

Nice solution form Sony! But the big question is: How much are those cards going to cost? Yet not a single of them is available on the market.

RUMOR: Sony A7sIII with slots for SD and CFexpress cards???

I just got this from one reliable source:

The Sony A7sIII will have a double card slot. It has two slots both capable of taking SD cards and CFexpress mini.

Now here comes the confusion: I trust this source but he said “CFexpress mini”. Don’t know if he meant the well known CFexpress Type B cards or if Sony will use the new CFexpress Typ A cards. If you wonder what those cards are Explora wrote an article about it:

Most recently, the CompactFlash Association has released the CFexpress 2.0 specification. This allows for three different card formats. Type A is the smallest and can feature up to 1 lane for 1 GB/s transfers.

Or maybe he meant the new SDexpress cards? If someone reading this knows the answer drop me a message!

Note for SAR readers: The reliable source only writes through contact form. So I hope he reads this and clarifies the rumor

Sony confirms our rumor: Sony A7sIII will be announced on July 28!!!

SonyAlphaUniverse just launched this teaser image! It confirms the validity of our rumor and indeed the camera will be announced on July 28. This gives me hope my rumored specs aren’t far off neither :)

To recap these are the rumored specs we got from early testers. Please keep in mind they had short time with a prototype version. This means some features may not be final or not entirely correct because of this:

  • New 12MP sensor with fast readout (unclear if is it the Quad Bayer 48MP sensor with effective 12MP or a “simple” 12MP)
  • records FHD 240fps, 4k120fps 10bit 4:2:2 and 4K120fps raw over HDMI
  • 600mbps bitrate
  • Base ISO 160 for S-LOG3
  • no Dual ISO
  • Max ISO 409600 (video)
  • 16bit RAW output
  • Sony claims 15 stops dynamic range
  • world’s highest resolution new 9.44 million dot EVF (QXGA resolution)
  • new kind of passive (noise free) cooling system with a mesh on the side to let air in??? (Camera still weather sealed)
  • no overheating, no recording time limits
  • UHSII card support
  • Looks pretty similar to a Sony A7rIV.
  • fully articulating screen like the one used by the Sony ZV-1.
  • announcement late July
  • shipment start mid August

WARNING: No idea if that’s a real thing: Sony A7sIII sensor spec sheet leaked?

People dropped me a ton of messages because that supposedly leaked Sony A7sIII spec sheet was “leaked” on various sites like for example XITEK.

Initially I was nearly sure this is a fake because the spec sheet specifically says the 48MP stills mode is disabled on the “WW271448″ camera. That code has been registered in Asia and refers to the future A7sIII. I really doubted Sony would mention this part on a spec sheet. But than readers pointed me out to the Sony A9 sensor spec sheet which contained the A9 camera code too.

So at the moment I have no clue if this is FAKE or REAL.

If it’s real the camera would be capable of taking 48MP stills but for some reason Sony would not enable this. Please don’t shitstorm on Sony yet because we don’t even know if this spec sheet is real at all :)

Thanks Lukedriftwood!

RUMOR: More info about that new A7sIII cooling system (still weather sealed) and the claimed 15 stops dynamic range (no dual ISO?)

Two sources shared some more info about the A7sIII camera. I thank them both! Disclaimer: The sources are testing prototype cameras. So some features might change or are not reported at all because of this.

Source 1 (first time source so take it with a grain of salt):

The new passive cooling system of the A7SIII will be a little slit on the right side of the camera (where all the ports are) which allows air to get in and out of the camera which allows it the be cooler because the camera isn’t completely sealed. Because it’s a passive cooling system, it will not make any noise or sound so it won’t interrupt audio when recording video. The passive cooling slit on the side has a mesh so the camera will still be weather sealed.
It will not have dual (native) ISO which more expensive cinema cameras have like the Blackmagic Cinema Camera 4k. It will, however, have a new sensor that has very fast read/transfer speeds (for the high frame rates (4K 120, 1080p 240).

Source 2:

We are currently shooting a video with the successor to the A7SII the footage out of this tiny beast is incredible we are shooting 4K 120FPS 10BIT 4:2:2 with 15 stops of dynamic range, our tests showing comparable to an Arri Alexa Mini

SAR note: I want to stress that the 15 stops dynamic range is a claim made by Sony marketing (if the rumor is true). Which means real DR might be a bit lower…
