UPDATED: Alpha lens poll analysis!
10 days ago we launched the Alpha lens poll (the E-mount lens poll will start soon). We had 2681 unique voters (every IP-address has one vote only). Everyone had to choose a maximum of 5 lenses and we had a toal of 11,387 votes.
I have no contact to Sony so I hope Sony is reading our website to evaluate the results
So what are the conclusion we can take form the results?
1) To my surprise the most requested lens is the 70-200mm Zeiss. If we sum bot lenses (with 2.8 and the 4.0 aperture) we have a total of 1017 votes (not single voters). 38% of you wanted that lens!
2) The second most requested lens is the 24-105mm f/4 (Zeiss or G). If we sum that with the 24–120mm f/2.8 (probably the 2.8 is an impossible aperture for such a wide zoom range) we have a total of 839 votes (31%)
3) The most requested prime lens is the 35mm f/1.8 (for a low-cost alternative to the G). Combine that with the High-Quality 35mm f/1.4 (Zeiss) 788 votes of people looking for a 35mm (29%)
4) The 50mm f/1.0 SSM (Zeiss) has been voted 402 times (15%). If you combine that with other fast lenses (f/1.2 and f/1.4 and f/1.8) we have a total of 746votes (27%)
5) Both 85mm lenses (1.8 and 1.2) are very requested lenses with a total of 685 votes (25%)
In short, many of you are willing to pay a lot of money for High-Quality lenses like the 70-200mm, 24-105mm and three classic fast ZEISS primes like the 35mm, 50mm and 85mm lens.

UPDATE:
I know some of you think that many lenses were redundant. I am not a POLL expert but when I studied Psychology one of the secret to have reliable polls was to repeat the same question in different forms to be sure the person answer is correct. That’s why I have choosen to give similar options. That prooves that the 70-200mm and the 24-105/120mm lenses are really wanted by our readers!
Also the unrealistic options do have a sense to see where people “tends” to vote. Of course there wll be never a 24-120mm f/2.8 lens but the fact that this lens has been voted prooves that wider zoom range lenses with very fast aperture are something that gets attention by the mass.
P.S.: Olympus made the 35-100mm f/2.0 Lens!…so fast zoom lenses are not impossible to make!

3 years ago |I think Sony needs more lenses SAMs like 16, 24 and 35mm, and instead the 70-200mm Zeiss (that should be very expensive) the 70-200mm f/4G and 200mm f/2G could be more interesting.
The 24-105mm f/4 and 16-50mm f/2.8 are a priority

3 years ago |At least there really is a 35mm F/1.8 coming out soon, though it’s only DT.
A 70-200 F/4 seems practical for all those who can’t afford the current 70-200 F/2.8, but I agree with what Din says.
I’m surprised the Carl Ziess 50mm F/0.7 ain’t on the list though… an insane piece of glass that was actually created – just on the wrong mount D:
What really concerns me is the issue of weather-proof/sealed lenses. Canon and Nikon make a big fuss about them.

3 years ago |I’d like to make the request that only realistic lenses be included for the E-mount poll – sure, I’d love to have a 16-300mm f/2 constant aperture zoom lens, but I’d also like a billion dollars and a mansion in southern California.

3 years ago |16-80 2.8 would be amazing. This is the way kit lenses need to go, and I would love one that is cheaper than the current “Zeiss”.

3 years ago |Yeah, too much funny, unrealistic or redundant lenses included in the poll. Like:
100mm f1.8 Macro (LOL)
16-80mm f2.8 and 16-70mm f2.8 exist together
20-120mm f4 and 24-105mm f4 exist together
50mm f1.2 Tilt Shift SSM (LOL)
Admin should sort them through before conducting the poll, too much items made the poll result less realistic.

3 years ago |24-105G f4.0 Is really the only lens on there I badly want! Interesting results here. Great job admin!
Now will Sony listen?
LEdgars
3 years ago |I agree with previous comments. So many votes were for unrealistic lenses. This decrease credibility of poll.
At the same time 70-200mm f/4G and 24-105mm f/4 are a very popular for other brands. It would be surprise if Sony users do not want them.

- Olympus has a much smaller sensor to cover so it’s much easier for them to build such fast lenses. Plus, 35-100 Oly is actually 70-200 on ff sensor.
And another thing, I can’t believe that so many people want 70-200 zeiss when the existing G is practically perfect!
F/4 is another story, they could easily remake the beercan and it would be great.

3 years ago |Er … I don’t want to spoil anything but your totals add to 150 % on your summary … which means that the polling system is not working

Tamron did make a 28-105mm f/2.8 lens, so a 24-120mm 2.8 is not out of the realm of possibility just unlikely (or slightly modified version).
I do wonder the value placed on fixed (f4) aperture lens. as in camera metering has improved to the point that a variable aperture (say 2.8-4 or 3.5-4.5) does not cause confusion when shooting. normally fixed aperture lens are better built but not in all cases (nikkor 24-85mm f2.8-4) nor does it give it inherently better IQ. Just something I noticed about your list of lens and people attitudes to f3.5-4.5 (2.8-4) vs f4 (when talking about wide-normal or normal-short telephoto focal range).

3 years ago |Question is not about possibility to made one or another lens, but about what Sony will… I also want excellent 70-200mm f2.8 for 1000USD, but Sony sells it for 2000$. Will most of voting people buy a new version for 2500$? No, they just couldn’t afford it what ever quality it is! The same is for unrealistic (because of eventually high price) lens. Therefore I suppose the poll is not best sellers list, but rather wish-list.
More realistic would be 70-200mm f4 for 1200$.

3 years ago |Have any of you tried the Tamron or Sigma 70-200mm? They are each under 900 bucks. My copy of the 70-200 EX DG HSM II Macro is excellent. I got it for 600 bucks after all the deals, and this was from an authorized U.S. dealer. I can’t imagine the G lens being over two times better than the Sigma.

3 years ago |By the way, I wonder how this new Sigma 70-200mm will compare to Sony’s current G lens. The Sigma with in-lens stabilization lists for $1699!! It might work well with the NEX bodies.

3 years ago |Hm… let’s see…
top10:
Only 30% of lenses are Primes – bit odd when you think that what Alpha system is missing most are primes.
Roughly 50% of lenses are/should be expensive… quite nice, reasonable result. Though in top-20 the expensive lenses take huge part of the cake.
The winners are beercan-alike constructions – great thing! Looks like Minolta spirit is still amongst Alpha-bayonet community! Great thing
What made me smile, the positive surprises, are:
233 and 232 votes for 85 and 58mm. Even though construction-wise I don’t think they’ll make them so bright – I’m very happy to see that people DO want them! I’d very gladly own one of this unique lenses (got this pleasure of few minute test) – they are simply amazing. One of the very few things Sony may be super-proud of, yet very low promotion is given to it. I understand that they are manual focus, making many people dislike them for this sole reason, and perhaps current 135 STF does not sell well but… c’mon! If reasonably priced many many people would love to get the Bokeh Masters! *hail* *hail* *hail*
IMHO the 16-80 with constant aperture could become very successful lens, even if it’d be f/3.5 all the way, though voted f/2.8 would be awesome.
Cheaper STF lenses!
Zeiss 16-80 successor – I’d love to have this! Well… maybe not this lens, but get it released so that I could buy 16-80mm f/3.5-4.5 for discounted price!
Tilt&shift – just because it’s cool. I could use T&S Macro more than wide-angle, but either way – it’d be a great thing to have. Just so that Canikon fanboys could not say how poor lenses lineup is – I ask what you miss most in Sony – and get answered: T&S – something making me lol.
10-20mm – Super-wide angle! hell yea. I had fun with Sigma lens. Nothing super-duper in terms of picture quality but… it’s 10mm! I don’t need uber quality, just let me shoot that wide on my APS-C! B) I’d take this one for sure… wanted to take Sigma already, but for now I await photokina and watch rumors for any sign of good, reasonably priced wide-angle lens. 16mm prime would work too! (NEX can have it, I want too!)

3 years ago |BTW: by “reasonably priced” I meant them being a good alternative for Sigma & Tamron. Not just 100$ cheaper than Nikon alternative, or in the other extreme: less than 300$ for any cost in aperture/sharpness. There are many people willing to pay for a nice quality lens, yet not wanting to spend entire payments for the Zeiss glass. I feel like Sony now goes mostly in these two extremes – or we get something really expensive, or we get something really cheap. Not that cheap is bad, it’s a very great thing to have cheap lenses, but through last 2 years Sony, you’ve gathered customers which are in-between these two extremes. Don’t forget about them
LEdgars
3 years ago |I’m really hope for new Sigma 70-200mm f2.8. Instead of Sony, street price for Sigma lenses is much lower than list price. For example Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 IF EX DG HSM list price is 1400, but street price in Amazon 900$. Thus I expect 1000-1100$ on street for new Sigma 70-200mm. Mechanical quality and AF for current Sigma version is OK, while optical quality (esp. at 200mm) is far from Sony version. I would say, except f2.8 (Sony also soft), there is 2 times difference. Bokeh also is 2 different stories.
Sony knows real sales numbers and I think 50(75)mm SAM is best seller from prime lenses. What is wrong if they did 30(45)mm and 85(127)mm cheep, compact and optically excellent lenses? It is all about A550 users.
