Complete Guide to Sony’s RX100 by Gary Friedman.

Gary Friedman’s book about the Sony RX100 is now available for $21.45 at friedmanarchives.com. This the only Sony camera that managed to stay for months ont he top seller list of Amazon (Click here to see the ranking). Definitely the most popular Sony camera of the year and a camera that has zero competition yet. If I would have to pickup one camera only that this may be my top option.

9 months ago |I picked up an RX100 and have been absolutely thrilled with it. Most important, it fits in my pants pocket without a problem, thus it gets used a lot more.

9 months ago |Yes the RX100 is really wonderful. While my A77 is in the shop I’ve gotten some fantastic pictures with this one I would have missed otherwise. Absolutely love the control ring. Even though the manual focus function of that ring doesn’t seem to work as super as I expected it to. But maybe I haven’t completely figgered it out yet… (like absolutely zip manual in the box, had to search on-line for manual, book could be interesting to get even more out of the camera).
It’s a league of it’s own because it’s truly pocketable and quiet, and nobody expects it to take this high quality pictures or allow that much settings and creativity, which is priceless at times.
Worth every penny…
also got the damn cool official Sony case+strap which gives better grip and safety … and with the strap you can almost strap it around your body as if it isn’t there without having to put it in your jeans pocket … and of course you can always take off the case again and go for complete stealth : )
This is Sony at its best !

9 months ago |Great that someone’s published a book about this amazing camera. I tracked the reviews on sonyalpharumors and took the plunge a couple months ago, buying two units.
I’ve been blogging quite a bit about the RX100 and using it as a video camera to journal my daily life.
Here’s a video I made exclusively with this camera. Lots of slow-mo and low light shooting:

I have a lot more RX100 info on my blog: rungunshoot.com

9 months ago |Good catch.
Though one thing I have to say about my RX100 is that it’s got a lot more in common with an Alpha DSLR than any of the other Cybershots. The controls, menus, features, output quality are all “Alpha” IMO. Only the form factor makes it a Cybershot. So the use of the Alpha symbol isn’t too misplaced as far as I’m concerned.
Since I got it about a month ago, I haven’t felt the need to use my Cybershot camera nor my A65V. It’s definitely an interesting device.

9 months ago |I have the A77 friedman book, its wonderful…. but he really needs to drop the bevelled, dropshadow text from the front covers, so 1992

9 months ago |Decent graphic design is important. The cover design on this makes it look cheap and crappy. It wouldn’t have cost much to pay someone to design a cover, or have some amateur friend design it. The covers for his stuff are a major detraction.

Anyway, I have one of these (as it seems just about everyone has) and I am always astonished by how well this camera performs. Everything I throw at it it just does and does damn well. I keep thinking that I need to use my ‘better’ cameras, because it is so small it couldn’t possibly be as good. But when I use it and look at what it can do that theory gets shattered every time. Now I take this and my X100 95% of the time. I have even added an OVF to it and use it pretty much as a single focal length camera (with the ability to zoom if it really needs it).
Went away this week and limited my gear to my RX100 and SLR with a couple of primes… Never took the SLR out of its bag, even shooting long exposure night sky and timelapse there was just nothing that this camera couldn’t handle. It easily outperforms my A700 and is very very close to my A65 and X100.
I guess the main limitation of the RX is the lack of a good long end, but doesn’t bother me 99% of the time and I almost always leave my 80-200mm f2.8 at home due to its size, unless I know I will specifically need it.

9 months ago |Fun, the thing I miss the most in this camera is a real wide-angle

I guess that is why I almost never take the 10-20 lens away from my Nikon, lol
But in fact the RX100 is just perfect for everything else but very wide-angle architecture pictures or portrait / nature pictures from far. This means almost the 80% of all possible subjects are excellently covered by this small little camera that I can carry with me everywhere.
The only thing you are left to wish (ok, apart wider angle or longer tele) is the next version of this same camera, just to see what Sony engineers can accomplish more…

Wow, I am very curious to know how you manage to add an ovf???
I am also curious how you did time mapse? Manually or there is a clock setting?
Thanks

9 months ago |My stable also includes an A77 & RX100 and I could not be more delighted. I also own several of Gary Friedman’s e books and I am quickly adding his new RX100 book. These books bring out the best in the camera and are a lot of fun to boot

I’d never buy such a book, doesn’t look professional at all.

9 months ago |I bought this today after seeing it here. So far I’ve only read a few sections, but my initial impression is that it’s an excellent book, very well written.
I don’t understand the logic of people who won’t buy it becuase of the way the cover looks, given that there’s nothing else like this on the market at the moment, that I know of.
