10 months ago |Super expensive E-mount FF == curved sensor?
That might explain the super expensive part …
Otherwise the cost should not be much bigger than NEX-7 (under 2,000 for sure)
usch
10 months ago |I bet the FF NEX will be a NEX-FS900, not a NEX-9. That would probably be some $15,000, given the current price of the FS700.

spaceman
10 months ago |What a turn off that would be if you want a photography tool . I hope that is not true, but it could be the reason for the “super expensive” rumor tag.
spaceman
10 months ago |I don’t think there is any need for a curved sensor. First of all the sensor do fit the E-mount and second of all it is most likely that only current FF glass is supposed to work adapted on it. APS-C glass will work cropped on the sensor.

10 months ago |…and not an a88/99 photo in sight
Matt
10 months ago |Because the new APS-C NEXs are much closer to release than the A99 (or whatever) is. I know how about YOU track down some photos of the A99… Whinging little baby.

I am waiting NEX-6 will be as great as 5R~~

10 months ago |seems like nex5R doesn’t support external viewfinder, it’s a shame!
yeah
10 months ago |why not? it has the same connector as the 5n.
Matt
10 months ago |Honestly, where do people come up with this crap?!
shady1991
10 months ago |hey.. whats wrong with you? you can’t talk like this!!!
I’ve mixed up nex5r and nex-6 images, so i thought nex 5R had pop-up flash and if that on top was flash then I’d be right.

10 months ago |Damn, why did I bought an NEX-5N 4 month ago
Matt
10 months ago |Because it was a good camera that fit your needs I presume? Did it suddenly stop working as well as it did before?
Philipp
10 months ago |Yeah, and it’s still a good one and I’m still satisfied and hopefully will be the next years.

10 months ago |I bought a 5n about 5 months ago, it was maybe my best purchase ever. I’m psyched for the 5r precisely because I know just how good my 5n is. Will I upgrade? Hell yes. Am I bitter about my 5n? Hell no.
AG
10 months ago |If 5r screen doesn’t tilt down like f3 then you made the right decision.
The Lotus Eater
10 months ago |Speak for yourself. I would rather have a screen that can face forward. I can’t remember the last time I needed to take a photo above head height.
Rooru S.
10 months ago |The same goes to you Lotus Eater. I can’t remember a moment I needed to see myself more than taking a picture of something kinda far from me when I was in a crowd of people. Forward facing screen goes more to facebook like pictures. Downward tilting screen goes more like, everything else (Taking pictures from the top of a building looking down and some inches away from the border of the building as an example).
The Lotus Eater
10 months ago |Clearly it’s each to their own isn’t it?
Facebook style pics are the last thing on my mind (I hate that self-absorbed crap), but forward facing is lots of fun for taking casual pics of me and my family.
If you do need to take a picture above a crowd, you can always tilt the screen upwards and turn your camera upside-down. Not ideal, but at least you can see the screen.
Rooru S.
10 months ago |Yeah, many people told me that..but you know, it’s awkward to hold the camera like that. Seems like the NEX-6 with the downward tilt screen will be my next camera to replace the looking good, working great NEX-5.

10 months ago |How expensive is the super expensive?
Patrick
10 months ago |Anyone noticed that the NEX 6 in the pevious photos had F3 DNA? Plastic texture (compare to 5R which shines the same as my 5n and 7) I wonder if that will be part of the ‘compromises’ (16mp, 1.4m EVF) of 6 vs 7?
Matt
10 months ago |I always said that the 6 would have a lower end feel than the 5, but I was rubbished for it at the time because the 6 is more expensive.
At any rate, the 6 is a little difficult to tell in the photos, but the one of the bottom of the camera and the one of the top near the shutter release seem to indicate that it has a similar plastic to an a57 or maybe even Mag-Alloy like the A77 (though probably more like an a5 series plastic). It isn’t shiny/matte soft plastic like the 3 series NEX have been. It is made of the much sturdier, speckled, texturized plastic than the 3 series, but not a metal finish like the 5/7 series.
I quite like that, seems purposeful and simple.
Patrick
10 months ago |But plastic still…
I like the reassuring feel of metal.
I don’t remember if you got bashed in the past, but I do remember you suggesting a lower build quality, as in the 6 would be for the 7 what the 3 is for the 5.
Good guess.
Because I have the EVF for the 5n, I would be buying the 5R and save myself some dosh. Also, I don’t use the mode dial anyways, manual FTW!
The Lotus Eater
10 months ago |I really don’t think it’s possible to tell from those pics whether the NEX-6 will be metal or plastic. Certain angles look plastic, other angles look metal.
I’d prefer metal, but high quality plastic is fine with me.

James B
10 months ago |Super-expensive – that would be a shame. How much more does a FF sensor cost?
BMan
10 months ago |Not all that much more.
Surface area is about 2x bigger + yield is smaller.
So all in all about 120%-200% price increase depending on yield.
Worst case, meaning the sensor costs 3x that of Nex 7. If for the sake of argument, nex 7 sensor is 1/3 the cost of the camera (which of course isn’t), then the nex 9 would cost about 2,000 USD/EUR.
That’s a “worst” case scenario imho.
If it will be much more expensive than that, then SONY are either milking the market, or there will be something a lot more interesting in it as well.
Spoon
10 months ago |Obviously, there’s more that will increase cost than just the sensor though.
obican
10 months ago |Actually, a FF sensor costs so much more. These sensors come from a 30cm wafer and you can get about 100 aps-c sensors from one of those but only 20 or so FF sensors. Also, if there are 20 evenly spaced dust particles, you lose the whole wafer(instead of just 1/5 of the sensors).
In short, a FF sensor could be about 10 times more expensive.
bas076
10 months ago |Interesting if 5R will support WL protocol.
James B
10 months ago |I suppose you will probably need an LA-EA adapter on top of that? Perhaps with in-built stabilisation?
Chad
10 months ago |I see the 5R has the flip screen (i like for self shooting), but did they happen to add touch screen capability to it?
Matt
10 months ago |I can’t see them going backwards and not having one. This is what you might call a reserved feature, they could have easily implemented it on the F3, but they are keeping it for the 5 series to differentiate it against the 3 series. It will almost certainy be in the 5R and pretty likely to be on the 6.
Scott
10 months ago |If the 5r keeps the touch screen from 5n, has the autofocus speed and tracking we all wish for with the phase detect sensor, and comes in at the same price as the 5n, I’ll happily take this over the 6. The real hope for me is implementing the technology from the screen of the rx100 which is so easy to see in sunlight, I could care less about a viewfinder.

10 months ago |Good job. Will the new firmware of NEX-7 be announced next week as well??
Nexter
10 months ago |Now I know that the best camera for me is NEX F3: it has ingenious 5N sensor, the pop-up flash, full HD film mode, the LCD 180 degrees tilt (very comfortable) and in addition it is the cheapest. As there is no mode dial, but an excellent camera never happen… Thanks SAR.
Denis
10 months ago |Super expensive? This gives me some hope about sensor tech. May be they uses lenses in color and IR filter to direct light in proper place (thus eliminating color shift and reducing vignetting) or someone else. Anyway, if it really does perform well with M-mount WA lenses, I’ll buy it if the price will be below $10000.

10 months ago |Please slide over top pic! It’s missing the nav dial. How could you not show that? You can barley see it in other pics
Awesome upgrade.

Sky_walker
10 months ago |it seems to have universal dial instead- it’s a VERY huge improvement. For example – if you constantly run with A mode then cycling through apertures will be easier then ever on NEXes. Great news

10 months ago |Can anyone comment on the strap holders? They are a lot smaller compared to the 5n. The new 5r strap holders look closer to the 7. Weaker?
I’m guessing the change is to might help with the strap accidentally hitting the video button, although the new dial looks like it will do a good job of that.
NEXfive
10 months ago |Just noticed this change too. This new shoulder strap holders look as if they’re build for triangles and in that case those should come with the shoulder strap. There are advantages and disadvantages of both variations. The older one usually held the camera with the lens downwards, which isn’t that comfortable to carry, but protects the camera better, while this new versions risks especially more the display getting damaged.
Alf
10 months ago |Wish the NEX-5R had the Mode Dial on top like the NEX-6 and the Cybershots models.
But I don’t want to pay much more for a NEX-6 with a viewfinder that I can’t use because I wear glasses (it’s like watching through a keyhole).
I’ll have to wait for the NEX-5WTF.
Boooe
10 months ago |why can’t you use it? doesn’t diopter adjustment work for you?
NEXfive
10 months ago |Awesome, I don’t want a viewfinder and I don’t want an integrated flash either, so keeping the old 5′s size makes the 5R my choice to keep some money for the Full Frame NEX.
I’d expected me to buy a NEX-5N when it will get sold cheaply soon, but the added control wheel seems great. Hopefully the NEX-5R will not be limited when tilting down the screen as the F3 is. And I’d love to buy a white version with the new pancake zoom in Europe, please…
BB
10 months ago |Are there any shots available of the downwards tilt angle on the screen?
As a short person, I take a lot of my crowd shots overhead and take full advantage of the 5n’s 45-degree downwards tilt.

10 months ago |“super expensive” scares me…
I really want a FF camera bad. I was previously considering D600 or A99 (and keeping the NEX-5N) when the FF news came out, then I was super excited about the NEX FF. However, I’d only pay over the D600 price if AF is fast “enough”. If AF was really good and the mount system is really cool then I wouldn’t pay *that* more than an A99. Maybe I could squeeze a little more money in from the sale of the 5N though..
I hope the first FF NEX is not a video camera!
Do you have a definition yet on “super expensive” please???
Also timing?
Thanks,
By the way you have by far the best, most accurate, and active rumor sites on the web I think.
obican
10 months ago |For legacy glass users, this will be a much better camera than NEX-7 since it doesn’t have the useless(with legacy glass) third wheel and AF-Lock button. If they keep the touchscreen, it’ll also be much easier to get a focus assist(just click wherever you want to magnify).
Roman
10 months ago |No Tri-navi system on the 6? what’s the deal? I was expecting it as it was so much pumped by everybody on the nex7 as one of the coolest things… so is still nex7 the best of the rest?

10 months ago |Why the dedicated movie button on both NEX-5R and NEX-6 again? Would not be possible to have a full video mode in the menu instead?
Rooru S.
10 months ago |Why the dedicated movie mode? If you can use the same settings for stills (color balance, aperture, shutter speed) why make it redundant with another mode for the same thing? Just put a quick access video button and that’s it instead of using space on the mode dial.

10 months ago |No pop-up flash on NEX-5R ??? They could at least put a pop-up flash like the NEX-F3……
Small
10 months ago |Yeah, if you miss the flash the you can buy all the other NEXes. I never use a flash and really don’t like same space wasted for it. So the 5R is right for me.
Rooru S.
10 months ago |If by this moment, you don’t get the idea, that the best regarded model in the NEX-series is the NEX-5N (and in 2010, the NEX-5), and that many people and review websites praised that they kept the form factor as small as possible as the predecessor, then you cannot see why they keep the same form as previous models. This will be the core and spirit of the NEX-series. Something traditional among the bodies released for this family. At least they added another control wheel.
AlexL
10 months ago |I’m a little disappointed that a pop-up flash is not built-in so I don’t have to carry a separate accessory for occasional fill-flash needs. So the NEX-5R will be the only NEX model not to have built in flash? Depending on the specs and pricing, my heart may end up going over to the NEX-6 (will it have phase-detect also?).
Otherwise, the NEX-5R is looking good. Love the nav wheel, record button placement.
Rooru S.
10 months ago |You wanted the NEX-5R to be as big as NEX-F3? If so, get the NEX-F3 or the NEX-6/7. The NEX-5R is loyal to the beggining of NEX-series. As small as possible but with full-size body performance. People complained about the increased size of the NEX-F3, but praised the built-in flash unit. It’s all about compromise. If you want this, you need to get rid of that. As simple as that.
AlexL
10 months ago |That’s why I love the NEX system. The compromises have been more than workable, and having one more model will give us options without burdening us with too much choice. The bodies have been fantastic so far.
Since we’re on the topic of compact size, more than anything we need is more lenses, more than any quibble I had about the flash. One or two more in the pancake category to truly take advantage of the NEX’s body size, and a great set of non-pancake primes. Sounds like we may finally be getting them at the end of the month.

10 months ago |ADMIN GOT A QUICK QUESTION ABOUT THE NEX-5R…
I don’t know, but…there is the possibility this NEX-5R flips 180 AND ALSO, tilts downward just like the previous 5-series generation… I say this, because the screen doesn’t need to go up as much as the F3 needs (because of the hump where the on-board flash sits) and also, because there are two small grips on top of the LCD screen, and that’s only made if you want to tilt down the LCD. Can you ask your sources about this???
