New images of the new Zeiss E-mount lenses!

They are not even for sale and the new Zeiss E-mount prime lenses won the IFA design award! Zeiss (Click here) celebrated this by posting new pics of the lenses. As you know they come in Sony E and Fuji X mount. As you know they will be released soon. We will have a 12mm f/2.8, 32mm f/1.8 and the 50mm f/2.8 macro. The first two may be my favorite two! Price is rumored to be in between $1,000 and $1,400. Basically in the price range of the 24mm f/1.8 E-mount Zeiss. That lens had been low in Stock for over one year because of the unexpected high orders. And it never got any price drop because of that (you only find some kind of superkits offers like that one on eBay US).

3 months ago |That new Zeiss looks hot on that Fuji.
The NEX is to small for me but the Fuji is just the right size for a second camera.
Hellven
3 months ago |but the Nex-7 has a bigger grip, and that’s what really matters
Geir
3 months ago |Well, someone have to get the fat ones.
Stan
3 months ago |LOL! Fat ones need love too

3 months ago |Wow, those look very sexy. Not sure how the focus rings will be without any grips…but they are very nice looking.
The Lotus Eater
3 months ago |The rings look to be rubber, so grip should be fine.
CTPhotographX.com
3 months ago |The grips are actually a throwback to the 1990 original Tamron SP lens line. I use them specifically for the excellent feel of the smooth rubber focus rings.

That ring is very well suited for screwdrive lenses that turn during AF… Because it slides like butter under fingers and provides a directional feedback for precise manual override. 300/2.8, and 200-400/5.6 original SP’s share this design as well. All wonderful design for Mino Screwdrive AF. The later models added ribs to the rubber, which I find brutish by comparison.
The downfall is trying to use it with gloves. Not easy without adding bands around the ring. But great for naked fingers.
CanonJack
3 months ago |Nice, I like the concept (I think).
It certainly would be better for screw driven lenses. Not sure about in cold/wet conditions though. Then again…a Zeiss may not find itself in that situation too often!

3 months ago |Another overpriced lenses without STABILIZATION :<
So what will people get for their money except expensive ZEISS stickers…?
Cause I guess the 32/1.8 won't be sharper wide-open than the 100 dollar Sigma…
The Lotus Eater
3 months ago |Yes, because Zeiss is just a sticker! Fool.
Zeiss don’t stabilise, so as to not compromise image quality.
The Sigma 30mm is f2.8, the Zeiss 32mm is f1.8. If the Zeiss is as sharp at f1.8 as the Sigma at f2.8, nobody will be complaining.
mah
3 months ago |maybe is this the reason on sony suks? all real zeis are Mf remember that
Geir
3 months ago |Autofocus has nothing to do with optical quality. Go troll somewhere else.
mah
3 months ago |yeah compare 24 70 zeiss and canon 24 70 II
Sky_walker
3 months ago |how does it show that AF got anything to the optical quality?
And if you’re about IS than remember: They never measure MTFs with image stabilization turned on.
Meanwhile IS causes lens to decenter – here’s basically what it does: http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2012/05/testing-for-a-decentered-lens-an-old-technique-gets-a-makeover – all of the issues coming from decentered lens apply to the lens with IS stressed to the edges. (basically: better in-lens image stabilization == higher decentering)

3 months ago |The E-Sonnar 24mm lens for NEX has sold in quantities far greater than Sony expected, to the point that Sony itself announced plans to increase its production capabilities for it as well as other NEX lenses. It is considered, by far, the best lens for NEX and its price is no less demonstrative that if you are looking for quality, you should pay for it.
Wayne Summers
3 months ago |Don’t really think you can compare the two but surly the Zeiss is not 80% 0r 90% better than the sigma. At most it would be 30% better if that at 2.8. I have two zeiss lenses and there really is something different about them and I really can’t say I regret getting them over other lenses. When I compared the zeiss to the lenses they replaced the quality was maybe 30% better and most of the improvement was in construction not optically. There is some magical thing about Zeiss lenses but I think if the competition tried a little harder and charged a little more it would be very close.
Stan
3 months ago |There’s always a point of diminishing returns. As an example, a $600 lens is not 4x better than a $150 lens of the same class/type.
CanonJack
3 months ago |Exactly right. People dont buy Zeiss because its perfect. They buy Zeiss because its a little bit better, and they have the money to do so.

animalsbybarry
3 months ago |MORE PIXEL POWER!
Joel Richards
3 months ago |Interesting. Do wish the NEX version had the electronic aperture ring like on the Fuji. Doubt I’ll be getting either. The Fuji version does look more compact but I’m guessing that is just a trick of the angle. Same optical formula and all.
xxxx
3 months ago |No, because the Fuji body is big.
Dan1k
3 months ago |The lens looks so smooth, so nice, so perfect but my real question and waiting to see its performance against SEL35f1.8 even though its 32mm and not 35mm. Not to large of a difference unless the AOF is wider or narrower. I really want to see some sample images sided by side with the SEL35f1.8. Is it also FF lens? I heard some people said it is FF, and some say its APS-C. CZ 32mm the glass is curved outward where the SEL35 is curved inward. SEL35f1.8 APS-C, $448, or spend another $500+ and get CZ 32f1.8

3 months ago |Nice design, btw I prefer the voigtlander 35mm f1.4 + M adaptor.
It’s smaller, cheaper and faster.

3 months ago |Will there be SEL 16/ECU1 12mm remake? Something like 13/15mm native E-mount?
RVN
3 months ago |i hope sony make SEL 14mm/2.8 or remake SEL 16mm/2.8 II
NEXfive
3 months ago |Well, SEL-16F28 plus VCL-ECU1 is an awesome E-Mount option to get the focal length of 12mm for video. It’s an acceptable option for all NEX cameras up to 16 Megapixels. This combo is also comparatively cheap and I guess it will stay like this as an entry level option beside the SEL-1018 f/4.0 and the forthcoming Zeiss 12mm f/2.8, which I’d love to get for (probably very much) more corner sharpness…
RVN
3 months ago |that’s right, much more improvement on corner sharpner 16mm/2.8 would be great
and come with black version of course haha
Hendrick
3 months ago |Admin, you should point out that at $1000 for an APS-C only lens, this lens is obviously finding a market of its own. FF lenses for a NEX 9 could easily cost a fair % more than this so it shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone.
Manual Focus Zeiss lenses for Leica or Nikon/Canon are not cheap either and yet they are considered the most resolving lenses (see the Robert Cicala LensRental article on testing resolution on the D800)
It isnt about the price of it, it is about the value it delivers. Seldom, Zeiss lenses deliver any less than their value suggests they should.
Ian Scovell
3 months ago |At focus, I tried the xpro 1 & 35 1.4, great combination, however the Fuji can’t reliably focus wide open. It was better at 1.8-2.0 so, I would like o think for wide pen performance the NEX will be ‘the’ camera to use this with.
SonyCyberPunk
3 months ago |This is just getting ridiculous! Look at how obscenely large our e mount lenses have become. I might as well just go back to my full frame dslr. Goodbye Sony, hello Canon or Nikon or anything else. Anyone interested in purchasing my NEX7 and a few good lenses?
ArtoS
3 months ago |I think, no-one :-/
But if you have good SAL lenses, I am interested
Poki
3 months ago |Apart from that its still much smaller than a SLR with comparably good lenses, its also MUCH lighter, which is much more important for many than size.
DL
3 months ago |It’s probably more accurate to say the lens hood is obscenely large. The 32 1.8 looks to be the same size as the Sony 35/1.8…Which isn’t that big anyways
CanonJack
3 months ago |It comes down to
1) Obscene lens flare
2) Obscene lens hood
3) Obscene price to manufacture the obscene lens flare out of the design.
I’ll take the big hood.

3 months ago |Where do you see the 50mm 2.8? Never saw a picture of that …

3 months ago |I like the look of the new glass. Not too crazy about the 32mm hood, but it’s no biggie. I see a few complaints about the size but that’s personal preference imho. Unless you’re using the few pancake options, most of the glass for NEX is a good chunk of equipment. I have the 24 cz and for me it balances out the whole package very nicely. Very excited to see the 12mm in flesh, it looks great to me… just might make me rethink my planned 1018 purchase.
Btw, here are some more shots of the prototypes: http://fstoppers.com/zeiss-distagon-t-2-812-planar-t-1-832-lenses-for-fuji-xf-and-sony-e-mounts

3 months ago |I would definitely consider the 32mm and the 50mm. I already have the Sony 50mm f/1.8, but I would say it’s only mediocre.
aaron
3 months ago |the lens itself doesn’t look that large at all. actually really good size in my opinion.
is it just me or is that hood kinda funny looking..? it looks just a little bit dis-proportionally large. i think i would have preferred more of a petal look.

3 months ago |those are wrong pictures.. probably sigma 30mm f2.8
those are posted on 2012 July. unless sony loves this particular korean so much that they released the lens just for him to test it out 10 months before the release, i doubt it.

3 months ago |Slower and more expensive less sharp!!! Let me say why i think so?
The new Zeiss lenses may be sharper and faster in tedt but I see no OSS. That means less shapnes in low light and long exposure when handheld. OSS gives you 2 or 3 steps faster lens in fact. And smaller and less expensive.
Personally I am extremely satisfied with my Sony 10-18 f4 OSS. If you always carry youre tripod when low light and like to spend extra money. Buy Zeiss

3 months ago |Prototypes are created long before they are passed, made official, and announced. Everything new needs to be tested for quality, durability, errors, improvements, and compatibility. Before companies gives the green light for mass production. The lenses that are set to come out “NEXT YEAR” are being TESTED THIS YEAR. The reason no company release all there products at once is- 1st costly, 2nd not fully developed. 3rd, people would skip to the best and leave out the rest=great loss in company investments. 4th, prices would be different.

3 months ago |Just hope the 50mm macro comes out soon with a removable hood for us underwater rig folks. We need a real macro lens asap. Hopefully someone will eventually release a longer macro sometime in the near future. 50mm macro is still rather short as far as macros go. 60 to 80mm would have been a lot better approach to macro for the NEX. Why in the world Sony ever even made the 30mm macro is beyond me? It way too short for a macro and 50mm is not all that much longer, but hey, I’m happy it’s on it’s way, something is better than nothing, even at $1G.
There’s been a rumor at a SR5 stage (supposed to be definite) that Zeiss will be making a 16-80mm zoom modeled after the SAL version for E-mount, but it may likely be too wide to fit into a Nauticam compact port.
At least things are moving forward for NEX.
Thank you Zeiss for the lens.
