Based on the rumors we received we tought it would be nice to make a simple comparison table between the future Sony NEX cameras and the compact MicroFourThirds models.

4 years ago |“In-Lens IS” is written for all Sony Cameras.
So that means that their won’t be Supersteady Shot Inside (in-body stablization) but rather in-lens image stabilization.

4 years ago |Looks that way, lens based IS (although this might mean that IS will work when shooting video?) – but will mean slightly larger lenses (and no ability to create ‘folding’ lenses like the E-P1′s kit lens)
No flash build-in! Arrhhhhh…….. another E-P1|2 camera without a small flash in the body.
Having owned an E-P1 for a while, lack of on-board flash ended up being the deal breaker (and I sold my E-P1)

With flash it would be a great camera especially for this price
Are you sure that there will be no flash? I was almost sure after looking at the photos that it had some kind of pop-up flash, besides without hot-shoe I don’t see how it can have external flash…

4 years ago |No internal flash
Wishmaster
4 years ago |So what is that on the top of those cameras?
Looks like a hidden pop-up flash for me…

4 years ago |it is the hotshoe!

4 years ago |If there was no Built in stabilization (SteadyShot) or Built in Flash i will 100% not buy Nex3/NEX5 and will buy a micro4 camera then invest in it (lenses etc)
I have no need for a compact camera that lack stabilization (Stabilization on lenses = bigger lenses) plus the lenses will be bigger anyway with or without stabilization compared to micro4
Stabilization and Flash is a MUST for entry level consumers so putting sweep panorama and HDR while being nice is gonna be useless since it lack stabilization or flash

4 years ago |I almost never use the built in flash so no problem there. If these are sold with the 16mm I think this is a much more interesting kit than the micro 4/3. I could be very happy with the camera and just the 16mm.

4 years ago |Hotshoe?
It doesn’t look like one but if you say it is a hotshoe I won’t argue

4 years ago |A pop-up hotshoe? It is more likely a pop-up flash on the NEXs.

4 years ago |Some considerations looking at the last video
If you jump around 1:00, you can see a screenshoot illustrating the shooting view. Presuming it’s real and not “created”, i can see Stabilization On (the hand down on the right), and Flash Auto (the usual lightning, up-left).
Just under it, AF-S, that means there should be an AF-C too (single, continuous), single shot, auto face-search and smile detection off. On the right side there’s a visual “focus distance indicator”, since diaphragm doesn’t change, neither the focal lenght (around 0:35).
There’s another hint about stabilization looking at the shooting modes ring, there’s a preset with a Portrait and the usual handshake around it, between Scene and Panorama.
FH could be Full HD and since i can’t see a specific mode i presume there will be a dedicated button (hoping it will not be a scene…).
About flash i think that auto could be ok even if it’s only external, but about stabilization, images makes me think that there should be at least a software implementation…

4 years ago |If you look at the Sony video that you posted, there is fash sign on screen shot. I think they will have internal flash but no hot shoe.
Richard
4 years ago |If you look at the commercial about 36 seconds in you get a brief shot of the status menus overlaid on the screen. In it there is an icon up on top that indicates the flash is set to auto and another one at the bottom for the stabilization mode (set to N?). Read into that what you want

4 years ago |There will be a built-in flash. Why else would there be a Flash Auto symbol on the rear LCD on the newest Sony EVIL video?

4 years ago |I think the presence of some sort of image stabilisation is sure. Some people are still hoping for a in-body mechanism rather than an in-lens one. I’d be OK with the in-lens option. Will the NEX3 and NEX5 have the same body? Having at least one wheel-type command would be a must for me…

4 years ago |I don’t know why anyone would buy cameras like the LX3 when they could get something like the NEX3, which is so much nicer with that 16mm, for not much more.

4 years ago |Why all this frustration over built-in-flash? Who uses built-in-flash? Could not care less about a built-in-flash. Give us a small real good camera with ultra sharp lenses and super resolution. A low-budget Leica, please …

4 years ago |Well, think of what kind of people might be interested in these cameras. I think it would probably be either dslr photographers looking for a compact camera with similar image quality and compact camera users that want something a bit more sophisticated, but who don’t want to carry around a large camera (Me). So pretty much for similar reasons as people are looking at micro 4/3 cameras.
The first group will want a hot-shoe to use a dedicated flash, because they usually give much better control or range. The second group however will want a build-in flash because they might use it for nearby objects such as people and fill-in flash. Especially when travelling I use flash, just for small things, but it enables me a lot more freedom without extra weight. (by carying a dedicated flash)

4 years ago |Beside these beautiful small cameras, are there any new rumours about the A900 successor, which was rumoured to have 30+mpix and beeing the first real professional DNA Sony DSLR?
deal breaker
4 years ago |no build in IS would be a dealbreaker for me. Sorry Sony, if so, you’d better go back to the drawing table and I wil buy into the 4/3 system. Only Oly seem to understand with their compact 4/3. cheers
Vince
4 years ago |@FE: Well, not everyone thinks the same way you do. There’s a reason why Canon’s G series have been around a long time, same as with the continued success of the LX3. Not everyone is happy with a fixed-focal length nor are they happy with a protruding lens when a zoom is fitted instead.
The lack of in-body stabilization is a deal-breaker for me. Pity Sony wasn’t able to put it in.

4 years ago |Yes, look at the video again. There are icons both for flash and SSS (image stablization).

4 years ago |Hi, Is there any indication that there might be manual control for exposure when shooting video? I.e. like the e-pl1 has. Many thanks, Sam
KJ
4 years ago |Yeah, IS and Internal Flash are MUST haves for me. If this camera is really going to be “Go Anywhere”, I should be able to carry it around as is and take any picture I want while on vacation from day until night.
If this camera can only take pictures during the day and then at night time in a dark restaurant it can’t grab the picture, what is the point of getting it?
I’ve been SOO excited about this camera and check this website every day, but hearing this news about no Flash really disappoints me. Hopefully all the “clues” in the video are true!!!
