Sony A77 button layout explained

The french photographer Sebastien explained the common analysis of the probable role of each of the buttons of the Sony A77. You can see more pictures at yLovePhoto! Thanks Sebastien for your work!
What do SAR readers think. IS the analysis correct???

Thomas
2 years ago |I think that it fairly correct. Unless Sony slept while designing the button layout, it should be somewhat like yLovePhoto describes.
I’m pleased to see that they have a lot of dedicated buttons. I’m not a fan of the combined navigator/ISO, Flash, Exposure thingy on the A55.

2 years ago |I think the only button an A700 user need to get used to is the “On off button”, the “delete”, “preview” , “Menu” buttons as they have been moved from the Left to Right to give space for the LCD.
Now it all the buttons are squeezed towards the Right.. I wonder will people tend to mispress them..

2 years ago |As long as we still get the DOF button… rolleyes–
Anyway, the top buttons look a bit tiny. But probably well implemented so it doesnt bother.
pmac
2 years ago |LOL – there a waste of space, I hope its a ‘soft’ button and can be repurposed.

2 years ago |The guy’s a genious, I would have never figured it out…somebody give him a prize!!!
) Oh, and another for doing it on a mockup, it should be much harder than doing so on a real camera.
Sony, your secret is no longer safe, now we know what the buttons do!!
What about the real thing!?

2 years ago |hehe, I did the same while ago, only without the picture, just in plain text.
The Top LCD On/Off is wrong – that’s the Display Panel Illumination button – turns on light which let’s you read text on top LCD at night.
It doesn’t turn off the top LCD, there’s no point in such button.

2 years ago |The Alpha 55 hast this Button on this Position
Sky_walker
2 years ago |A55 doesn’t have top LCD so it cannot have this button.
Maximus
2 years ago |He said, that he doesn’t believe, that that button is for LCD/EVF but for the LCD on top.
I said, that the Alpha 55 has the LCD/EVF Button obn the same position has shown above
Maximus
2 years ago |I would change “exposure correction” and “WB”
Thomas
2 years ago |I agree. The Exposure correction button seems hard to reach. But again, this isn’t official

2 years ago |I’d love to check out if the analysis is correct, but yLovePhoto doesn’t open and the picture doesn’t show.
Too many volunteer analysts upon monsieur Sebastien, I guess.

2 years ago |This is sure to be a hot button issue.

2 years ago |“This is sure to be a hot butt….”
How about making some or all of those buttons user assignable?
SonyA77
2 years ago |U hope there is at least one “C” button like on the A700.

2 years ago |So now I know what I’ve missed all the time since I first saw this mockup … there is no longer a switch to shut off the image stabilization… Seems that it moved to the menu…
Joel
2 years ago |Wrong wrong wrong. They would NEVER put the exposure correction button in such an awkward place. This is a button your finger needs to be able to fall upon easily whilst your eye is up against the view finder. The button would normally be on the rear so that it can be pressed with your thumb whilst your forefinger is free to use the primary dial to dial in a value.
Shame on Sony if this is where they are going to place it..
dude
2 years ago |All the buttons on the back seem very logical assigned by the maker of this image series.
So Exposure compensation has to be one of these on top.
Keep in mind You don’t hold the Exposure comp button.
You press it, to open the menu, then dial and then shutter half-press (or dial middle or exp comp button again) enter.
With the A77 you will see the menu in the EVF as well.
I personally would favour it to be more on the right hand of the body.
And the two of WB and Drive to be more towards the middle.
Actually I wonder how well the two small buttons in front of the display work with gloves, compared to the big buttons on a A700.
Carl
2 years ago |Generally, it’s pretty well laid out. Only real problem is the exposure comp location, which would require double jointedness to use with one hand.
Edgars
2 years ago |I almost never using exposure compensation button. Usually shooting in Aperture priority and second wheel I set for exposure compensation. In manual mode it also is not necessary. Would be nice if it will be possible to set this button rather for flash exp compensation.
Still doubt A77 will be with SD and MS only…
Knurd
2 years ago |Wrong. The tiny buttons on the top dispense 4 different flavors of jelly beans. And the so-called ‘IR receiver’ is a death laser.
alex
2 years ago |button lay out explained from a mockup-camera? these are all mockup buttons, with mockup names..this one will give great overexposed pics, because there will be tons of lightleaks, coming from everywhere..looks more like a underwater-housing or a transparent translucent camera btw.
Q
2 years ago |I thought one of the benefits of EVF’s included a real DOF image available, wouldn’t this negate the need for a DOF button, then again it all depends on how they implement the EVF…
dude
2 years ago |It does not negate the DOF button.
Because the aperture is wide open when normally framing.
It is only stopped down when you press the DOF button.
See the A33 and A55 models ;o)
Q
2 years ago |Thinking about a little more, the A mount has a mechanical aperture so it does make sense
Thinking upon that further, if the A mount has electronic aperture coupled with SLT technology, it could make for some interesting video applications. Does the E mount have a mechanical aperture?
pmac
2 years ago |Q – yes, the E mount is all electronic – another sign that in the long run it will be the Sony video mount.

2 years ago |Does it really have SD instead of CF?
Current CF 400x have up to 60 Mb/s write speed and cost about 100$ for 32Gb.
Current SD class 10 have 10 Mb/s write speed (Transcend class 10 has 16 Mb/s). The only exception is Pretec class 16, which costs 45 pounds per 4 Gb card and has up to 20 Mb/s write speed.
So more or less equal difference in write speed between SD and CF now is 60/16 and is close to 4. It means the time of writing the buffer will be 4-5 times with SD card than with CF.
Is is acceptable for pro or semi-pro camera?
pmac
2 years ago |yes
Ren
2 years ago |It’s not just the buffer write speed, but also the read speed of an SD vs a CF that bothers me. I shoot weddings (among other things) and having to download 1500+ pictures at the painfully slow SD card speeds isn’t something I would look forward to.
I really wish Sony would release a firmware update for the a900/a850 to improve high ISO noise by a stop, or two. I don’t care about video or live view, and the a900/a850 would be an ideal upgrade from my a700 if it performed a little better in low light.
I’m holding out until we finally get to see the a700 replacement, but if it is just an over-glorified a55 I’ll probably just look for an a850 on ebay and call it a day.
I’m a photographer, not a videographer, so I couldn’t care less if my DSLR has video, nor do I care if it autofocuses during video shooting. This SLT thing seems like an odd way for Sony to go, if you ask me. If I want to shoot video I’ll use my video camera.
My camera is the main tool I use to make a living, so I want it to be the best tool for the job. So far, my a700 has served me well, but it is time to get something that performs better at 3200+ ISO without having to switch systems and buy all new glass.
This whole thing is becoming frustrating.
SonyA77
2 years ago |Nothing odd about using SLT if you want high fps and an electronic viewfinder. Might not be what you want, but plenty of people do want it. I am one of them and judging by A55 sales there are going to be more of us that want the fps, EVF and video than there are of you guys not wanting it.
If I earned a living off my camera I would not be using Sony, they want to be where the money is and that is not the tiny pro sector, it is the high sales consumer market with SLT and NEX.
Swap to Canikon, you will be far better served.
Sky_walker
2 years ago |Yes it does, but it’s only a mockup – such things can change.
