7 months ago |The NEX-6 is indeed an amazing camera, and definitely a step up from the original NEX-5 I used to have.
One thing I’ve noticed, though, is that there seems to be a bug in it where the AF is always set to AF-C, even if you set it to AF-S. It will try to focus non-stop, even when Eye Start is off, and even while in menus! This definitely feels like it should be fixed, as it might be what’s killing the battery life for a lot of users.

7 months ago |To be fair, the X-E1 body costs $150 more. It’s with the kit zoom that the difference is $400, but that kit zoom is f/2.8-4, not f/3.5-5.6.
In this short review they don’t seem to find an advantage is the phase detect AF on the sensor. We’ll have to wait and see if it really works well or not.
The EVF seems to be the same as NEX-7, with too much contrast (it seems to be fixed in the A99, according to user reports, so it’s strange they didn’t fix it in this one too).

7 months ago |It’s also available here in Vancouver (Canada). Actually, I got to play with one at a local LondonDrugs store. Nice camera but found the power zoom of the 16-50, ring or slider hard to modulate, i.e. too zooming too fast or too slow.

7 months ago |Well, this generation seems to be inferior from the IQ standpoint compared to previous. I see no other reason to buy NEX over m43 now besides using MF lenses. Sony played too much with gimmicks. Sony, if you can listen: people doesn’t need PDAF, wherever you will place it. They need FAST and RELIABLE af. The only way to achieve this is to use recent AF researches, not that anachronistic optimechanical unreliable and expensive crap, which is reducing IQ.
I won’t even talk how half baked your cameras are: you failed to utilize your own sensor properly (compared to Pentax, Olympus and Nikon), you failed to utilize best EVF properly, your UI suck, you disrespect your customers (introducing artificially limited functionality, like ridiculous HDR implementation, ridiculous top wheel in NEX-5R completely mimicking back wheel, etc).

As an owner of NEX-5, 5n and now the 6, I disagree with most of what you stated.
The IQ is not inferior, the 6 is better than the 5 and 5n.
The PDAF is a step forward, the 6 AF is much faster than the 5n.
The EVF in the 6 is superior to all m4/3, including the Olympus OM-D EM and Panasonic GH-3.
The only thing m4/3 system is superior is the lens selection, which you strangely failed to mention.
As far as “failed to utilize your own sensor properly” is the dumbest thing I have ever heard.
The sensors m4/3 are using are smaller and not the same ones in the NEX series. (even-tough some are made by Sony)
Comparing the Nikon D600 and Sony a-99 IQ and say that the Nikon usage of the sensor is better is silly.
There is no proof of that.
You do not have to like the NEX series, that is ok, but your rant come from from nowhere.

7 months ago |I gather that you don’t own a NEX-6. Your comments seem to be a hodgepodge of comments that other people made about the camera, glued together by a somewhat incoherent thought pattern bent on savaging a camera that you simply don’t have much knowledge of. Well, you’re entitled to your opinion. It’s unfortunate that it’s not an informed one.

7 months ago |X-E1 is $400 more? With kit lens perhaps. Would rather have a quality lens I think.

7 months ago |sony’s camera bodies are nice. 5N, 6, & 7. but you need good quality lens for it. I just returned the nex 6 after find out the 16-50 is even worse than the 18-55. I hope sigma can come out a 17-50 lens for this system. Until there is some HIGH quality AF lens (I don’t have any MF lens and don’t want to MF either) I will not invest further in this system. Just keep using the 5N and 24 1.8 as a light weight fix lens camera for now. Fuji is looking very attractive now with her lens line up. temp to switch if review of the 18-55 2.8-4 is good. X-E1/18-55 2.8-4/35 1.4 vs Nex 6/18-55/35 1.8?

7 months ago |My wait is over (on the nex body anyhow) since I was waiting to jump into the nex system when they offered a nex with the 16.1 sensor, EVF and hotshoe. I look forward to using it for my cycling and birding and replace my a55 setup which has served me well. While I was waiting I bought a Pansonic GF2 because it was so inexpensive but the IQ of the 4/3 sensor was disappointing. I did some side by side shooting with the GF2, a700 and a580 and the 4/3 sensor was much worse (the colors, and iso performance was especially disappointing. I will be patient another 6 months and not buy any nex lenses except the kit lens and see what is offered then. When I started shooting Sony with the a300 I brought cheaper lens hoping the IQ would be good enough up but they weren’t and replaced them with CZ and G ones. I think I will get the adapter to shoot with my alpha lens for now. Hopefully the nex lens lineup will be more established by then.
