Digital rev so suck in camera review these day!

6 months ago |That was a pretty funny episode.
Kai plays up to his jekyll and hyde persona.
Whilst communicating the main advantages of the camera.
The sensor is great and the same as the Nikon D7000.
That PDAF is fast.
And 10fps beats any crop dslr.
It’s obvious he’s become a reluctant fan.

6 months ago |Now all Sony needs to do is learn how to create usable menus by not burying all the important settings deep in the menus and learn how to design lenses to a competent level, like real camera companies, such as Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Olympus, Fuji, Leica, etc… Then they’d be on to a real winner here.

6 months ago |Why Sony do not append CD-AF in A-mount camera?
The newest Sony E-mount cameras have the build-in sensor’s focusing mode both CD-AF and PD-AF.
Well, people put question, why Sony do not append CD-AF on their A-mount camera?
We want Sony put a turn switch on the A-mount camera. The mode-A —- PD-AF with the SLT manner working. but the mode-B —– can switch the translucent mirror to be locked up, and on-sensor method to perform the CD-AF and PD-AF.
Some camera lovers did not want translucent mirror manner, and others who did not want an E-mount camera. Ok, a switchable AF mode’s A-mount camera to be better.
Could someone who help to tell Sony?

6 months ago |His observations about the hotshoe caught my attention: “It means Sony owners are no longer spoon-fed Sony accessories”, he says. Well, in my experience, there’s been a lot of third party accessories for the iISO hotshoe – including some that have no Sony equivalent, like the Phottix Odin wireless flash trigger system.
Interestingly, he also mentions that there’s no standard microphone jack, so in fact the new hotshoe with its highly proprietary connector system will make sure Sony owners cannot use just any off-the-shelf microphone … or flash, for that matter.
But there’s no need to worry about such trivial matters, because now it’s possible to use standard spirit levels and dumb wireless flash triggers with Sony cameras.
You wanted a standard hotshoe, you got a standard hotshoe – I hope you enjoy it.

6 months ago |I haven’t heard one person claim to have purchased the $800 XLR-K1M adapter for the new shoe. They could have made that thing work from a plug… without changing our 25 year iISO “standard” which now supports wireless HSS/TTL radio units.
The new shoe may as well be a “dumb” connection… because it’s left the third party companies dumbfounded as what to do. Sony now has two different hot shoes being sold new.
Back to the stone age for Sony flash.

6 months ago |Precisely. The new hotshoe may open up the door to cheap, third party accessories of dubious value to the average user. However, combined with the lack of a microphone jack, it’s slamming the same door closed.
How many will actually use “cross-brand” accessories like dumb wireless flash triggers – compared to those who would prefer to be able to use a standard microphone with a 3.5 mm jack … and not a huge adapter, that literally dwarfs the camera?
After all, it’s probably the ability to shoot video that lies behind Sony’s decision to change the hotshoe, but I think they forgot to consider their actual consumer base while focusing entirely on the consumer base they hope to attract.
And, like you say: They could have achieved the exact same functionality with a separate plug on the camera body.

6 months ago |Well I’m planning on going to buy the XLR adapter. Although think it’s way overpriced, and should be in fact done with a separate cable instead of the hot shoe (leave the hotshoe for other stuff like lights or anyhting else really), but it’s the only available option for good audio, so got to have it and glad it’s there.
Have to agree that they could have left it with the ilso shoe, I like it, it works fine.
There are enough 3rd party flashes and triggers supporting the ilso shoe and TTL/ADI. So what was the problem? I’d rather had the ilso shoe and a very slim but completly dumb ilso to iso plate for the hotshoe. THen you could use the dumb cheap triggers, and keep the current minolta & sony users happy. I’ve got a HVL 43 which I want to use, but am not able to use an on board flash on the a99 to trigger it, and can’t use a radio trigger, as that normally is iso -> iso or ilso -> ilso… Hope phottix make something available soon.
And about digital rev, I love the show. (and tripod
)
I found it a bit dissappointing they didn’t gave the A99 enough coverage, and kai sometimes bashes sony for no apparent reason, but he does the same with nikon and canon (don’t only watch the sony episodes he does!)… But he also points out some very basic disfunctionalities in all products tested sometimes (including sony), and he’s spot on with annoyances on camera’s. (a77 lag with dials, evf switching) I hope some sony ppl watch digital rev as well. if they pick up on the small stuff behind the style of digitalrev, it can only improve their products. Kai has already said quite a few times in his video’s, he is impressed with the resolution and quality of the eve, but in the end he’s still an ovf guy (as are many alpha users).
I think Sony can convince a lot of users to switch to sony as they would listen a bit more to what the ppl on SAR/dpreview and online reviews miss or dislike but like and love as well, on their sony camera’s. but that’s just my opinion.

6 months ago |Went to your website…
What are you trying to say?
Your A99 video is disgusting because you set it to 60i and you can see the interlacing on the video because you don’t have a clue what you’re doing.
You should have put it on progressive not interlaced… but it would be perfectly feasible to correct this in post.
I’m not sure what you’re trying to prove with your post however, I don’t know what camcorder you used but you’re testing it backwards. Daylight and you’re using a small aperture it looks like. Small sensor Camcorders will give you large DOF due to smaller sensor. What you certainly wont get is a shallow DOF which is why people want much much larger sensors of DSLRs…
Jurka
6 months ago |Can you see any real DOF difference in those videos?
Camcorder with open aperture gives you shallow dof at tele focal lenghts, if object is close to you. If distance to object is ten meters or more, you really cannot see fullframe sensor advantage in this terms.
Interlaced A99 video is because of electronic stabilization. Progressive at 70 mm and 30 fps handheld is UNUSABLE!!!!! Interlaced shows less jagging on subject edges, but Premiere Elements does not good deinterlacing.
But all story is about to shoot handeld video, and which one looks better?
You are rigth- those with motorzoom! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JsmQ6m2myvA And as you see, you can achieve a shallow dof, too!

6 months ago |I’ve shot handheld using 50mm on A77 (75mm) no problem and no steadyshot jittering.
I would suggest you look into what shutter speed you are using.
Try your test again using progressive and at least 1/100 shutter speed.
1/125 if using 60p and it should be more usable I would think.
Even at 25/30 fps try that shutter. It will require you to increase ISO possible but should have less steadyshot jitter.
