Sony says PMA in September is the right place for new announcements (we need better marketing guys!)
After the Sony conference an interviewer made some questions to the Sony entertainment president (Source: ustream.tv). Do consider that he might don’t know the detailed roadmap on Alpha and Nex cameras. That’s why he might made a “small” marketing mistake:
He tells that CES is not really the event to talk about photography equipment especially professionally. He said that PMA should be the event to announce such devices.
Now, I am almost sure the NEX-4 and A77 will come long time before the PMA (which takes place in September only!). But Sony marketing guys should be more careful when saying we should wait until September because one can get the idea that there will be no new Alpha and NEX cameras/lenses in the meanwhile!

Andrew
3 years ago |They are going to release all of the four E-mount lenses planned for this year on December 31, 2011. Sony cares about you and want to ensure you don’t have to wait ALL THE WAY TIL 2012.
As per the A77, Sony is busy stuffing all of their finest Make.Believe technology into the worlds smallest ever dslr body. This takes time people.

It’s only your feeling or you have a rumor about it ?

Futile
3 years ago |Maybe he’s setting our expectations correctly. After all your NEX4 and A77 annoucement tip-offs are only Rumours.
I wouldn’t be surprised if we hear nothing from Alpha / NEX till September.
SonyA700
3 years ago |Wouldn’t surprise me either. Wasn’t the rumour that we were supposed to have an announcement about the A77 in January?
I guess the announcement is that you aren’t going to hear from us again until September…

3 years ago |I’m okay with my a850, my two Zeiss lenses and a bag full of old Minolta glass for the next year. The a850 is a very good camera for what I do and the 24-70 f/2.8 and my 135 f/1.8 CZ’s are the best of class.
I have a lot of other stuff to spend my money one anyway and I do spend way too much time wondering what Sony will or wont do.
If Sony fails to introduce any new pro DSLR equipment for another year that just the way it is.
My current sony/Minolta setup is beter than most of my Canon or Nikon pals anyway!

And 2011 is really not the time to buy more Sony photography gear. I will wait until 2012 and look to Fuji and others to try something different.

3 years ago |I think this leaves me no choice but to adquire the new A55, instead of trying to wait for the new A77. I hope they at least improve the A55 with some firmware.
Adi
3 years ago |Me to. I can wait until March, if not will be A55 most likely. I was prepared to pay more for A77 but it comes to late.I do not change cameras often, so it will be a few good years until it’s time to upgrade again.
Jan
3 years ago |OK, no more waiting for a NEX with viewfinder and decent lens. GH2 it is.
Larry
3 years ago |Just curious (because I’m going to have to make a similar decision in a couple of months) — why a GH2 and not a33 or a55?
Milos Janata
3 years ago |I am interested in video as much as in photography.
For me A55 is not usable for video because of lack of manual controls.
GH2 has manual controls and very crisp video.
It really takes too long.
Jan
3 years ago |Video is great on the GH2 (24p, 60p), and still performance is acceptable. On the A55, we get a slightly larger dynamic range and slightly better iq for stills, and about 6 minutes of video… Not least, the A55 is larger and heavier.
My dream camera would be as compact and unobtrusive as possible, but include a large, corner positioned EVF (got a nose in the middle of my face), an APS-C sensor, manual controls. A55 is too large for street and travel photography. GH2 is a slightly better compromise.
BTW: I don’t really need a system camera for traveling. Just a large sensor and a fast lens with a decent zoom range, like 24-85. A NEX version of the R1 would be great!
Larry
3 years ago |I’m in the same position as you are, I want a good travel camera with a DSLR sized sensor. Just from reading (I have no experience with an actual digital camera other than compacts) the Sonys seem to offer sufficiently better low light, high ISO performance for me to go up to the a33 rather than a GH2. I’m not very concerned about video. I didn’t realize the GH2 was significantly smaller than the Sonys.
The camera I would like is the EPL2 with Sony’s sensor and software, plus the a33 viewfinder.

Nick
3 years ago |Sony really need to get their act together regarding product information and release dates. Compition is very high in the DSLR market ,Sony need to hang on to their loyal (investors !)base and build on it.
As a A900 user i am looking foward to their next FF DSLR ,but if it wasn’t for sites like this ,then we would be completly in the dark and i for one would be questioning investing any more money into a system that might be now not being updated.
Eric
3 years ago |They might want to reconsider. Your sister site, 43rumors, is saying that a pro-grade Olympus PEN with various weather sealed pancake primes will be announced within a few months. Even if the NEX-7 is going to be better I’m not going to wait around for that possibility if Olympus has something like available.

LOL.
Mat Foulidis
3 years ago |Pepperoni,
Did you ever hear of something called the Alpha A900 and A850. Those are professional grade cameras … that boast the world’s highest resolution full frame sensor. Don’t forget the fullframe AF carl zeiss lenses. Before spreading your Sony hatred please use facts to back up your arguments. Many photographers rely on the a900/850 cameras to make a living.

3 years ago |Did a different camera company make announcements at CES? Seriously, I haven’t been following it, so, did Nikon or Olympus or others present cameras?
Jan
3 years ago |Olympus has presented a compact that eats the LX5 for breakfast. Also, they have come forward with a slightly updated PEN. Perhaps we will see something from Panasonic, too? Canon presents lots of small fry, and Nikon is keeping mum (probably until March).

3 years ago |Sony has established no pattern of any sort for when they release cameras; they have released cameras practically every month of the year, with major announcements coming in January, May, June, August, and September–both in Photokina years (the A900 in September of 2008) & non-Photokina (the A700 in Septemner of 2007) years. I think we have pretty good reason to believe that Sony will release both the NEX-7 & the A77, and perhaps an A7xx, well before PMA. But I expect that they will save something to be announced in the lead-up to PMA–perhaps in late August.
The success of Sony’s new cameras and sensors this year has led to production logjams, with many cameras on back order for weeks at a times. I suspect that is the major reason for Sony moving as slowly as it has this year: growing pains.
Whether Sony has been in the professional camera business is an intriguing issue. When they started producing dslrs, and even when they introduced the A900 (truly a professional camera if there ever was one), Sony claimed publicy that they were not entering the professional market–although the profeaaional quality of the A900 & a good number of both Zeiss & Sony G lenses belied their claim. So it was predicted then that Sony would never announce that they are in the professional camera market–but suddenly they would be there and would no longer be claiming otherwise. One of the most encouraging developments this year is that Sony is now, in multiple subtle but very clear ways SAYING the they are in the professional camera business. For one thing they are calling the cameras that we have been waiting so long for “professional cameras”; and they are categorizing the A850 & the A900 as “Professional” on Sony Style; and they are promoting their Artisans of Imager–professional Sony dslr users–in advertisement after advertisement in photography magazines, starting this past summer.
I take these developments to mean that Sony is very confident it has extremely competitive, or more that competitive, cameras to introduce both at the A700 level and above–cameras that they don’t have to rush to introduce because they’ll still be well ahead of the competition when they are introduced.
So I would say the opposite, David: Sony is now officially engaged in the professional dslr market. And I believe we’re going to see some fur fly.

i am not aware sony ever mentioned they want to enter that market, Sony is building a user base and they have to start from the ground up, if you are not ahppy with Sony, just sell and move on… sounds like some people have no guts to make a change and rather wine on and on…
