(SR3) New 16-50mm f/2.8 SAM and 10-20mm G lenses soon!

Above: The Sony DT 11-18mm f/4.5-5.6
Accroding to one of our sources Sony will also introduce follwing two lenses at Photokina: The 16-50mm f/2.8 SAM and the 10-20mm G which replaces the current Sony DT 11-18mm f/4.5-5.6.
We still need to confirm the rumor with one of our second sources…
Reminder (SR = Sonyrumor):
SR1=probably fake rumor
SR2=rumor from unkown sources
SR3=50% chance it is correct
SR4=rumor from known sources
SR5=almost certainly correct!

Q
3 years ago |I would assume both of these lenses to the designated as DT if this rumour is to be true?

3 years ago |If the 10-20mm G lens rumor is true, that’s a definite buy for me =D
Any idea what the aperture on that lens would be?

3 years ago |now this sound interesting.
somehow.. once i saw the words “SAM” it made me think of current design of all SAM lenses. i’m not a fans in that. 10-20 G? could it be 1st DT G lenses? hope these will become real

3 years ago |If its a “G” series lens, I’d assume its for full frame cameras

3 years ago |10-20mm on a full frame camera? I’d be amazed if Sony pulled that off.

10-20mm on a Fullframe is a little tough, Sigma’s 12-24mm barely manages it and still has masses of Light Falloff and its not that bright anyways.
Recon it would have to be DT, but doubt it’d be G unless Sony really are serious about getting DT SAMs to work on NEX (which is looking to be their future APS-C business)

3 years ago |I agree with Don on the design of the SAM lenses.
Personally, it also makes me worried that Sony will go Nikon and make a bunch of very cheap cameras without built in AF motors.

They will!
Sony rep said there was internal discussion about the in camera motor before the release of A230/A330/A380.
At that time (or better: with them launching) Sony had not even 5 SAM lenses.
Only the expansive SSM models.
Over long term all Lenses will be SAM, SSM or MF.
It’s likely that the SAM models become better motor implementations in the future, of cause.
Possible that the E->A adapter does not fully AF because bad SAM motors in current lenses.
Olympus had trouble with 4/3s on m4/3s early on, too.
Sony has to get the adapter to AF sooner or later.
Or they almost lose the argument of using A Lenses on NEX.
The only reason to hold on in-body motor (for Sony and Nikon) is that people have legacy lenses.
That is why A7xx class surely stays with in-body motor for a long time.
If the motor is in the lens or in the body is mostly only a mind game.
I have no statistical data, but I doubt 80s canon lenses have dying motor more often than Minoltas have trouble (oily blade, fungus or what ever).
Well there are some people with Minolta glass, that can/will afford only a entry level body.
They will need to step up to Sony entry level lenses, sadly.
Anyways
In lens motor is not that bad.
It will harm only a few people (sry if you are one of them).
But they are a plus for NEX users.

3 years ago |Wow… most interesting lenses to come! I wonder what the price tag of 16-50mm f/2.8 SAM will be. Tamron 17-50mm F/2.8 have really, really good price, so I wonder how it will match with it quality and price wise. Cause it already won on the wide end, which is a great news, we’ll most likely get something in between Zeiss and Kits – zoom with wide angel and nice price.
10-20mm G? This would be most interesting lens. Nikon has 10-24, Canon has 10-22… both with better range, both really good lenses. So I wonder how Sony will stand the competition. Not saying about Sigma 10-20 which is a really nice lens to play with. The old 11-18mm f/4.5-5.6 was quite troublesome, especially in matter of chromatic aberrations and distortions, so I hope it gets improved.

As for in-lens motor “It will harm only a few people” – it ain’t that “few”. It’s everyone with Minolta lenses, tons of people having alternative-producers lenses (Tamron/Sigma – they have their own implementations of SSM but it’s only in high-end lenses) and nearly everyone having older generation of lenses. Not saying about things like Macro lenses of which nearly none offer any kind of in-lens engine.
To be honest – I’m in the group of people who would like to see SAM lenses abandoned. I got one of these and it feels a bit like a plastic toy from Canon. Metal there appears more of a decoration than something making you feel it won’t crash into thousand pieces after first fall, and the focusing ring not only is so small that you can’t adjust focus precise enough, but also doesn’t move as smooth as one would want. Right now I have a feeling that NEX lenses are way superb to entire SAM family. Where’s my metal SAM with wide focus ring?

3 years ago |SAM lenses are here to stay. As long as Sony doesnt introduce motor-less body too early, there’s nothing to worry about. In any case, series 7 and above definitely keep the in-body motor. Hopefully series 5 as well.

3 years ago |well that a good rumours.. but why sony G lens or Zeiss sony didn’t make a super wide lens for full frame like 14-24mm f2.8? i think that’s will great to fill the gap in wide range sony lens..
