(SR3) Sony A77 1.04 firmware update being tested now. Not coming this week :(
Asian sources told me today that the new 1.04 firmware update has been released to Sony related photographers and reviewers. They are now currently testing it to check for issues. The firmware is not going to be published this week. Sorry, there has been a communication mistake between the sources. They first told me that Sony would release the firmware this week but only now they understood that it is just an “internal” release.
Please understand that this is a rumors website, it’s hard to get every time 100% reliable and super correct info. Anyway, the update should be very soon available for us normal customers too!

7 months ago |Dear Sony,
I am willing to be a beta tester. In fact, many people here is willing to be a beta tester. Don’t just hand the firmware to professional photographers, you will just get a very biased feedback. I am a software engineer and a self proclaimed “professional shit photographer” or a “master of self exposure”. Where do I sign up to participate in your beta testing?

7 months ago |I am just glad that Sony are taking the A77 seriously enough to continue with firmware fixes.
David
7 months ago |Dude they JUST released it and its their flagship camera for a while now, until the a99. Why on earth wouldn’t they take it seriously?!
Terryfried
7 months ago |in terms of lenses they have already forgotten about it. I relay like my 1650 but all new lenses on road map appear to be E-mount or FF. NO sign of 50-180/2.8 compact weatherproof APS-C lens or similar.
David
7 months ago |I don’t think so Terry.
I too want A-mount lenses, but I don’t think they’re forgotten. I think you get this perception because we’ve had more disclosure and leaks about E-mount. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t A-mount lenses in the works.
SonyA77
7 months ago |Yeah they’ve “only” had 6 years to sort out A-mount lenses…
The Lotus Eater
7 months ago |+1 David. That was a strange comment.
SonyA77
7 months ago |Based on past experience, it isn’t! Sony could release a new model in six months, they’ve done it plenty of times before.
The Lotus Eater
7 months ago |Actually their flagship APS-C and FF cameras have been very well supported. The same goes for NEX and recent SLT cameras.
However, in general terms there’s no point in releasing firmware updates if there are no particular problems.
A lot of people seem to have a sense of entitlement that feature upgrades via firmware should be released. It just so happens that Sony have added a fair number of features and improvements via firmware recently, but there is no divine right to this.
SonyA77
7 months ago |Just ask people who have Sony dSLRs and you’ll get your answer.
David
7 months ago |Yeah, but in my mind it’s always been clear that some models are more “transient” than others.
The a700 was around for the long term. The a77 is too.
Same with the 850/900 – and they did get firmware updates
I had an a500, and I don’t think that ever got any updates. Same with the a580, but I kinda knew that would be a “transient” model because the future of Sony is with SLT, and we knew that at the time.
I’m fine with it though because the a580 works brilliantly and will continue to be a great camera for years. It doesn’t particularly need an update, and most people just have unrealistic wish-lists anyway.
My a850 got an update – improved the autofocus, added a few more menu options. That’s fine too since it’s already an amazing camera and didn’t really need fixing.
But the a77 is clearly around for the long term. Plus there are quite a few problems with the existing firmware – whether it’s lag, glitches, incompatibility etc. Those things need fixing, so Sony definitely will support it with firmware for the long run.
My opinion anyway!

7 months ago |Sony has surprised all of us more than once with new models replacing ones in the market just a short time.
How long was the a33 shipping before the a35 was announced, and the NEX-5 in stores before NEX-5n?
I’ve wondered what Sony would do if it took several months to resume production because of the floods AND the a77 continued to suffer from firmware/hardware issues.
Would Sony just fix it with a updated product and rename it as an a78?
So saying that the a77 will be around for the “long term” is risky
You never know what Sony will do and why
SonyA77
7 months ago |@ Steve
That’s my concern, it wouldn’t take much for Sony to release a new model in six months with improved buffer size and the like.
Walt
7 months ago |Remember that Sony’s flagship APS-C camera was the a700. No way you can say it was well supported. As in they are virtually in denial they ever made it. And did not replace the line.
Wheelus
7 months ago |I have never understood this A700 obsession. The A550/580 cameras are great cameras in their price range, are still good cameras. Why the obsession with a 12 MP camera?
The Lotus Eater
7 months ago |You just can’t give it a rest, can you Walt? The A700 received some very important support, especially in the form of firmware 4. And yes, they did replace the line, with the A77. The only reason you don’t like the A77 is because of the EVF, we know that as you’ve told us again and again and again, ad nauseam. You might not see it as the A700 replacement, but everyone else not stuck in the past does. Have you actually held one yet?
Dave Cox
7 months ago |Hey Walt, maybe you’d like to post a comment about the crap high ISO performance of the A77 and why didn’t they use the NEX 5N sensor instead. You can piss most of us of some of the time but if you said that you’d succeed in pissing all of us off all of the time. Result!!
Dave Cox
7 months ago |Why don’t they just get the public to test it. They thought that was OK for the first 3 FW releases…..

mmmm
7 months ago |Sony will not let the public to test the new firmware. Or the user will blame Sony to let them be white mouse, and why don’t Sony test before release. But I am willing to have beta test!

7 months ago |I make just enough money with my photography to justify the money I spend on equipment and to keep the IRS off my back as I do it; having said this I’ve made most of my income managing information technology departments and managing software development teams.
Public beta of software is one thing but it’s risky to release firmware for testing because of basic difference separating the two. Firmware runs the hardware of the device and if something is just not right in the code the camera is toast and likely would need to be sent back to the factory to be fixed, and that’s if it can be fixed at all.

Focus Mode remembered in the three memories, like in A700.
Customisable EV and ? buttons.
For the moment I have no need for tethered, but I think it should be there.

I’m not being deliberately rude but what do you think you’re achieving by posting the same old uninformed crap as 1,000 other people.
The mind boggles!!

7 months ago |If only Sony will allow
1) Focus Bracketing (for macro photographers)
2) Tethered Shooting with an open SDK (We all know the A77 was ALSO meant for studio, it has a DC in plug)
3) Steal Adobe Auto vector DeBlur Algorithm and integrate it into the camera.
4) Increase the Frame buffer….
Frank Withers
7 months ago |still the iso broken record. downsize your 24.5mp to 16mp and the noise performance is already superior to the 5n. move onnnnn
My only hope is that they get rid of the control lag. I’m perfectly happy with every other feature of the camera. Get rid of the control lag and this will be a viable backup to my a850.

7 months ago |Funny comments, same people commenting on all posts..u better spend more time taking pics guys…than looking at 100% crops of cats or sunflowers on your computer..the camera doesn’t really matter, the man behind the camera does…with or without firmware the A77 is a great camera if your are willing to do landscape or portraiture photography…if you have unrealistic expectations for this range of price it’s your problem..just save more money and get yourself a MF camera such as phaseone!!! but still i am sure u will have complains..there’s no perfect camera..just choose the rite that fit for the kinda picture u wanna take..and don’t forget that the lens also matter…a sony A200 with a great lens is better than a A77 with a Tamron 18-250 on it..

I tell others and remind myself every time I start to convince myself that a new camera will make a big difference in my art. That a great photograph starts with a great subject, next great light followed by the photographic skill to make the picture and last the camera and its lens.
I see examples daily of great photographs taken with a camera and lens I wouldn’t be caught dead leaving the house with.
But this is a Sony camera and accessory rumor site
It’s time to get off my butt leave the house, with my two year old and discontinued Alpha a850 and tripod and take some pictures I want to take for me for a change, and not for others and see if today I make myself proud.
