(SR4) A55 successor coming with the A77?

I was really surprised when one of my sources told me that Sony would announce a second SLT camera along the A77. We are not talking about the A35 which will be announced on Wednesday, we are talking about an unexpected new model that will be the official successor of the A55!!! I have been told the A35 will fix some of the first generation SLT technology issues and maybe that’s why Sony is going to replace the A55 too. I don’t know the name of the camera (A57???) but I have bene told that it looks almost exactly like the A77 (They are like brother and sisther). The main difference between the two cameras is the sensor. I hope to get some specs as soon as possible! Both cameras will be announced in July (let’s hope it is the 7th of July!).

kalpurush :)
2 years ago |Put it on sale at craiglist ot kijiji, the sooner the better and buy the a77
GJH2
2 years ago |If A35 is gonna be the new entry level the price for it will quickly need to fall fairly substantially but I think Sony will only drop it a hundred dollars. So you’d have A35 for $599, A55 replacement for $799, and A77 for $999. I guess that kind of makes sense. The A35 blows the Canon T3 out of the water- I can’t believe there are people are buying that piece of crap camera. Shame on Canon for even putting out that garbage. Put the A35 at $499 and those Canon buyers might be interested at taking a look at the A35.
Steve
2 years ago |Makes sense!
Three consumer cameras each a couple hundred dollars more than other.
35-37/57/77
If the a77 is as good as everyone here thinks it will be, AND Sony has fixed the major problems with the current crop then this new product lineup could be strong in the market and set the stage for a new pro lineup in 2012
kalpurush :)
2 years ago |Yes, Sony might lead the competition if they are able to fixed those major problems with a33 and a55.
Hope no more delay for the coming a77 – waiting seems too long now!
SonyA77
2 years ago |To get market share, Sony need to shift a LOT of the A35. It simply isn’t going to happen at that price when you are up against established brands and the media are telling you to buy a Canikon because of a perceived lack of Sony lenses.
GJH2
2 years ago |Well said A77. I agree.
Dulaney Ward
2 years ago |The A35 is rumored to be $699 with lens; that almost certainly means $599 body only–which is competitive, especially given that it will have the 16-mpx sensor.
But it doesn’t make sense that the A57 & A77 will be basically the same except the sensor. I thought–and still hope–it will be the other way around.
Spoon
2 years ago |Yes it’s most likely the A55 successor, no I highly doubt it will be like a twin brother of the “A77″ in terms of looks, because that would mean Sony would leave a gap in the lineup for A55 users that are looking to replace their *compact* A55 with something updated. The A700 successor is significantly larger and the A35 doesn’t do everything the A55 does (no folding screen, slower fps etc).
Carl
2 years ago |The A700 has a pentaprism.
Kakaku
2 years ago |My fear is that the rumored price of the A77 is actually for the new A55 replacement and the real price of A77 will be higher. If the rumored price is correct then I’m ready to pre-order on day 1. =)
admin
2 years ago |Don’t worry, the price is good for the A77. $1100 for A77 with 18-55mm lens. Of course you will pay more for the 18-50mm f/2.8 lens!
kalpurush :)
2 years ago |Is 18-50/2.8 a CZ lens? That would be fantastic.
Much thanks Andrea for all your hard work
Mistral75
2 years ago |18-50mm f/2.8? It used to be rumoured as 16-50mm f/2.8…
kalpurush :)
2 years ago |Yes, I am surprised too!
May be it’s a mistake from Andrea?
Could you please confirm it Andrea? Much thanks
Carl
2 years ago |I’m surprised they just didn’t rebrand the 17-50/2.8 Tamron, really.
SonyA77
2 years ago |Phew! Price of the A77 is good to know, I panicked when it might have been the A57 price
T3
2 years ago |If the A35 is getting the current A55 sensor, then what sensor will reside in the A55 replacement? So for now, the differences between the A55 replacement and A77 seem to be:
- body build and weather sealing? (plastic versus metal body)
- different image sensor
- A77 will have additional CF card slot, A55 replacement will be same as A55 (SD + MSPD)
- a more simplified (less cost) shutter mechanism in the A55
- better quality EVF in A77??
- more manual controls (two wheels like somebody already mentioned)
ChenAlan
2 years ago |What if the mockups we have seen (without a CF card) is to replace the A55 and NOT the A77 we think it is.
Spoon
2 years ago |The last mockup from the A700 replacement didn’t show any room for a CF slot behind the battery door (too small).
Spoon
2 years ago |Uh.. that should have read: the door covering the memory slots.
kalpurush :)
2 years ago |That mockup might be the a55 replacement? a77 might be a total surprise package for us from Sony?
Adi
2 years ago |I doubt it.Again, the transparent prototype body has a mounting mecanism for the strap which is used oly with metal bodies. Metal bodies add cost and are reserved for high end model. I don’t think A55 succsesor will have one but A77 will most likely hve it. I’m also sure that the transparent body was the preproduction design, with only minor changes (if any) so if you could not fit a CF card on that one you will not fit one in the production model.
Milos Janata
2 years ago |I just hope for full manual video controls
GJH2
2 years ago |That is my number one wish as well Milos. But I don’t see it happening. Sony could easily turn this into a GH2 and 7D killer in terms of video. But they won’t. Sony has been very conservative in their implementation of video. I suspect they do not want to impact their high end video camera sales. But if the video was as good as the GH2, with full manual controls, this would be an amazing camera. Still think it will be a fantastic stills camera though. And maybe Sony will surprise me and show that they’re serious about DSLR video.
Stewe
2 years ago |Lol, they are really screwed things up. So bottom line that they will not release any firmware update for a33/55. Instead they are releasing two new cameras. Well it’s sound like bullshit to me. Oh well, whatever, my 33 is completly satisfying me. Just wanted more control and presets in m-mode.
Dulaney Ward
2 years ago |Has anyone said that they will not release FW update for A35/55? I don’t think so.
Stewe
2 years ago |Lol, did somebody said vise versa? So untill then you should be quiet.
SonyA77
2 years ago |Pity, I was hoping that Sony would bring out a budget A2x SLT to kill D3100/1100D sales. Sony are going to have an uphill struggle to sell the A35 at that high price.
Adi
2 years ago |They may look like brother and sister but I doubt that A57 will have a magnesium alloy body ( hope that A77 will have one).
SonyA77
2 years ago |I doubt they would have increased the size of the A5x series. It would be more likely to be called a A65 or A75.
Ren
2 years ago |To me, a a55 that is the same physical size and control layout as the a77 would be winner if all they are doing is giving it a different sensor. Most of us don’t need a 24mp camera…I, for one do not look forward to dealing with those huge files.
I have almost filled a 1tb drive in about a year with my 12mp a700, and I can happily make 20×30 enlargements from the images. I would be perfectly happy with a 16mp sensor to replace my a700 as long as the high ISO noise is greatly improved.
By the way, I have had email conversations with one of the best known professional Sony shooters, and I asked him if he thought it best to buy an a850 / a900, or wait for the new SLT cameras to be released. He indicated that the new cameras will have significantly better high ISO performance. He obviously couldn’t get into any more detail than that, but I can only assume that he has experience with the new cameras and has no reason to lie. If he were simply trying to push Sony products I would think he would more than likely encourage me to spend $2700 on a a900 rather than recommend I wait for a camera costing less than half as much.
SonyA77
2 years ago |You don’t need to be a pro to know that a new sensor means better high ISO.
Still, the A850/900 puts in a very respectable showing against the new A580 sensor, but it is full frame, so it should!
Dulaney Ward
2 years ago |Very interesting information about the conversation with the Sony pro!
David
2 years ago |I seriously doubt the A55 successor and the A77 will be similar in any way, shape, or form…not going to happen…
admin
2 years ago |David, you should stay tuned on SAR. I might will get a picture soon!
mugen
2 years ago |Yeah, get it
David
2 years ago |I would definitely love to see a pic of both the official A55 and A77…I have e feeling though that the A55 is going to stay small because it is not going to be used for pro use but more so for everyday people who need to fit it in their bags or throw it in the glove compartment. The A77 will probably measure 6″ x 4″ x 3″ in order to fit all of that great stuff we’ve been waiting for….
David
2 years ago |Sorry I meant to say “A55 successor”…in any event…I hope the A77 is worth selling my A700…I wanted to believe the A700 was passe for so long…and ended up buying a new one and selling three times in 4 years lol…I’m never selling my A850 though…that thing is like gold now!!!
Dulaney Ward
2 years ago |You know, Andrea, I am inclined to believe what David has just said—though of course they may share some features.
Terryfried
2 years ago |Funny for a forum for suposed Photographers no-one expects 2 new products to look the same(in a photo) they may be similar of vastly different in size.
SonyA77
2 years ago |Nope. The scale is easily measured due to the size of the lens mount. That never changes regardless of body size.
Terryfried
2 years ago |Of coarse. but we where talking genraly as non of us have seen the evidence. I was thinking it may be photos of A57 with 18-55 lens and A77 with 18-50/f2.8 fited so norefrance scale would be visable.

2 years ago |any NEX-7 news?
R0B
2 years ago |And the winner for taking the biggest bite out of their own market share goes to…SONY!!
Sorry, but cant they make a camera and stick with it for little more than a year and then release a ‘brand new’ camera whereby nothing apart from its look has changed! Take a page out of nikons book, have a total amateur camera, one aimed a bit higher, one at enthusiasts and one at pros, rather than pumping out camera after camera after camera which are all pretty much the same!
For example – a100, 200, 230, 290, 300, 330, 350, 380, 390, 450, 500, 550… really? apart from the last two, theyre all way too similar for my liking, and seemed to be released a week within each other xD
If they spent a lil more time working on succesors to these cameras, rather than playing with the cosmetics and cosmetics only, they might actually start to get somewhere :O
Precisely why the a77 will rock, theyve spent time on it! It was like last week when they revealed the 33 and 55 and the NEX-3, whats the need for updating them so quick really?
SonyA77
2 years ago |Nikon release an upgraded entry level camera EVERY year. Canon have released the 500D, 550D and 600D EVERY year.
Dulaney Ward
2 years ago |Exactly! Sony is not introducing entry-level cameras any more frequeently that Canikon. But for the first time I thoroughly doubt a SAR SR4 rumor. I believe that the surprise camera will be an A55 successor, but the rest I seriously doubt.
admin
2 years ago |Sorry, what is the rest?
Dulaney Ward
2 years ago |That it will be basically the same camera as the A77, with the only major difference being the sensor.
Mistral75
2 years ago |And so do Pentax with their K-m / K-x / K-r. But one by one, not two to three simulaneous tvariations around the same concept.
Joey
2 years ago |Fixing the amount of time being able to record with stabilization on is a major difference to me. If it weren’t for that difference I would have already bought an a33. Going from 9 minutes to 29 minutes is the feature I look forward to most. More megapixels means nothing to me as my wife’s Nikon D40 has a six megapixel sensor and takes fantastic photos. I’d rather have less quality megapixels rather than a 24 megapixel sensor which only creates huger files and take longer to upload to flickr.
I understand that my situation blogging is not the same as someone who wishes to reproduce enormous prints.
SonyA77
2 years ago |It’s not just large prints, it’s large crops.
R0B
2 years ago |at least they have significant differences to things such as image quality lol, the lower end range has been nothing more than cosmetic changes, the 200/230/290 have the exact same insides, do the nikon d40/d3000/d3100? think not
Joey
2 years ago |Here’s to hoping the announcement and availability of the a35 comes soon. I’m getting tired of waiting.
My plan is to get the a35 and the Tamron 18-270 pzd along with the 30 mm macro easy choice lens. Tick tock tick tock. C’mon already!
Sergei Zhukov
2 years ago |A77 is supposed to have no lag in performance (file writing freeze on a55), better EVF that hopefully allows for studio work and better reproduction of the scene, better ergonomics, flash performance, higher resolution and better high ISO handling. Simply put – geared towards Pro and Advanced photographers.
Nothing wrong with a33/a55 – they are consumer cameras with a punch in performance.
Chad Matthew
2 years ago |Perhaps this other camera will be to the A77 what the A33 is to the A55?
Sergei Zhukov
2 years ago |Sony is going “trial and error” route and let people rant about their design in USE rather than on paper. Good for them – best way to know what works and sells.
A55 sells well, its successor, if any good, will do the same:) So rant your heart out. I’m sure SLT will go out of production the moment some genius puts effective AF module into the main sensor.
These are very fun cameras – enjoy yourselves.
Steve
2 years ago |Then, if we can only get a sensor that is so good that we no longer need traditional lenses:-)
emopunk
2 years ago |It could be that this successor is a direct competitor for Nikon D7000/ Canon D600. A77 will have to deal with 7D/D400. Is it possible according to you, Andrea? Then it would be reasonable for this upcoming model to have two control wheels, for example.
admin
2 years ago |Yes, it’s possible!
P.S.: In the meanwhile one more source confirmed there will be two new SLT cameras in July.
kalpurush :)
2 years ago |Andrea, the lens you were talking which might be released along with a77, the 16/18-50mm/2.8, is it a CZ lens? Or, G?
Could you please confirm it? Thanks:)
emopunk
2 years ago |Well, let’s hope to be right then. To compete with D7000/Canon D600 it has to have robust build, vertical grip possibilities and all the bells and whistles. Nonetheless, flawless flash performance. That is deal breaker for me, to name one!
Steve
2 years ago |The lack of third-party product support have been one of the problems attracting serious photographers to Sony cameras
Helena
2 years ago |Sometime ago, Sony opened the doors to the SD memory cards. Less money in “Memory sticks” but more money in cams (everybody hates mcards Sony). A clever movement now will be taking a universal flash hotshoe, making an adapter for “olds” Sony flashes.
Dulaney Ward
2 years ago |no; the Minolta hotshoe of the Alpha-mount cameras is superior & should be kept; and not everyone hates MS cards, though I believe that Sony eventually will phase them oput
hanugro
2 years ago |Second that. I used to hate Minolta hotshoe until I use it. If you need ISO hotshoe just buy adapter. It does not cost much at ebay.
Steve
2 years ago |Yes, you’re correct that you can purchase an adaptor, but it gets a bit unwieldy adding radio flash and other professional add-ons. I do it, but it would be nice if I didn’t need too.
Maybe if more pros used Sony the third-party mfg’s would add Sony support to products.
SonyA77
2 years ago |I’ve never understood the Minolta iISO shoe argument. If you want to put triggers on an iISO shoe, then buy an adapter for peanuts off eBay like I did. The vast majority of people will never want to put anything more than a iISO mount flash on it.
If you put a Canon flash on a Nikon camera it’ll fire at full power, but that’s all it will do! Yet people (including reviewers) bang on about the Minolta iISO shoe not being “standard”. They are simply clueless!
Sky_walker
2 years ago |Minolta hotshoe has one more advantage: you can get an adapter with safety system – in case your flash would go nuts or have too high current (eg. from an attempts to use 3rd party or some analog-era flashes on modern DSLR) it’ll burn only the adapter, not entire camera flash system as it’s in Canikon DSLRs.
Maveric19
2 years ago |As I have stated in the past, I would love it if pocket wizard made a unit with the Sony hotshoe mount. They don’t. I love the Quantum system but they don’t make it for Sony. I however do love the fact that the Sony flashes locks to the hotshoe therefor preventing an accidental drop of the flash gun.

2 years ago |In the past has there been a trend as to how long after a camera has been announced and when it was available for purchase?
A month?
A couple weeks?
Immediately?
Dulaney Ward

Q
2 years ago |In light of this new rumor, has there been any shift in pricing expectation?
To me, this seems like a ploy so that they can sell the A77 at a higher price point then originally planned. The watered down model can be price pitched at around US$999
SonyA77
2 years ago |Admin said that the A77 was still 1099 USD with kit lens.
ingmar
2 years ago |The A55 does have some drawbacks brought with the new SLT technology so I think (if done right) publishing a new model is a very good idea also if the A55 isn’t that old. But if the A57 – or however it will be called – will have the same size than the A77, they are both too small or the A57 will be much bigger than the A55. I’m interessted in the A77 after all the cool rumors but the A55 is way too small for my hands.
Before somebody thinks I don’t know what I’m talking about, I have my uncles’ A55 with me for this holidays – I have an A850. The two most negative drawbacks for me are the size and the Electronic Viewfinder. But I hope Sony improved that points with the A77 (and the other new models). After playing with the A55 for a while I hope that Sony isn’t fully dropping the normal SLR technology in the Fullframe sector until they improved it in many points.
