(SR4) Is the Fuji X100 killer coming? NEX-7 has built-in viewfinder!

The Fuji X100 is most popular mirrorless camera with built-in viewfinder. Hop the NEX-7 will become more popular than the Fuji!!!
Finally I am getting rumors about the future NEX-7 too! Sources are confirming the NEC-7 is coming in late August. But the news I can share today is that it has indeed an integrated viewfinder. We have been told it is the same 3 million dot OLED viewfinder from the A77. The EVF has a high refresh rate to avoid flickering and other issues you have with current viewfinder. Everybody told me that viewfinder is a huge step forward to anything yo have seen before (better than the Sony A55 EVF, better than the external Olympus VF-2 viewfinder).
What I don’t know yet is if the NEX-7 has a rangefinder style a là Fuji X100 (Click here to see that camera) or a more classical DSRL look like the Panasonic G3! Anyway, we are getting tons of rumors in theses days so stay tuned because there could be surprises at any time on SAR!
Reminder (SR = Sonyrumor):
SR1=probably fake rumor
SR2=rumor from unknown sources
SR3=50% chance it is correct
SR4=rumor from known sources
SR5=almost certainly correct!
Reminder: The NEX-7 has the same 24 Megapixel sensor from the A77!

That E-P3 is so appealing right now but I love the IQ of my NEX. You can’t beat a big sensor… unless you have a lens lineup.

So far the only options are SONY’s SEL-16F28 with VCL-ECU1 converter or much better image quality with the Voigtländer Ultra-Wide Heliar 12mm f5.6 Aspherical II plus Adapter:

2 years ago |The m4/3 camp can side-step its disadvantage in not having a good sensor other than what Panasonic provides.
An m4/3 manufacturer like Olympus could just use the Sony 16mp APS-C sensor and Sony 24mp APS-C sensor, and simply crop the image to an m4/3 2.0x crop size to match the image from the m4/3 lens. The m4/3 camp would then have a small capable camera with a lot of dedicated lens to choose from, including such excellent pancake prime as the 20mm f/1.7 (40mm f/1.7 in 35mm equivalent).
It will be more difficult and it will take a longer time to make dedicated E-mount lenses for the Sony NEX.
El Aura
2 years ago |Apart from costs which likely would be somewhat higher it would also make the cameras at tad larger (at least if Olympus wants to retain sensor stabilisations, remember the NEX cameras do not have it).
If mechanically possible (probably not), one could adopt m43 lenses onto a NEX-C3.
Sky_walker
2 years ago |“If mechanically possible (probably not), one could adopt m43 lenses onto a NEX-C3.” – it is possible. Adapters are on eBay. check the picture.
davide
2 years ago |Not that easy. Flange distance difference is just 2mm, a very tight value for having correct infinity focus: http://www.ayton.id.au/wp02/?p=2648
Then, of course, you have the issue with all electronic lenses: you don’t have to just mount them, but to power them correctly, use the diaphragm, and focus. Even manual focus may be trick.
I’ll bet that adapter is a scam (but let me know if you succeeded in using it for real to take serious pictures, not just to mechanically “attach” the lens)

2 years ago |The lens situation is indeed the only thing that might prevent me from going back to NEX after the NEX-7 release. With m4/3′s I have two ultra-wide zooms, a really high quality 12mm f/2, a very tiny 14mm f/2.5 pancake, 20mm f/1.7 pancake, 25mm f1/.4, a 45mm f/1.8, all the telephotos I’ll ever need, some decent kit standard zooms (the Panasonic 14-45mm is beyond decent actually, its quite good).
However, when I had my NEX-3 I didn’t even bother using any of the native glass with it. The 18-55mm is crap, the 16mm f/2.8 isn’t much better, and the 18-200mm is absurdly large. The Zeiss 24mm is a good start, but they need a decent quality wide angle, a 30mm f/1.4, and something like a 60mm f/1.8 stat. The NEX-7 will surely be an amazing body with a great sensor; but what good will it be with no lenses worth using on it?

2 years ago |Rangefinder or SLR style could be make or break for me. It would have to be a ‘small slab’ rangefinder style to work for me to keep with the philosophy of the ‘compact system’, I really wouldn’t be too keen on a G3 type design.

Chris
2 years ago |Leica styled rangefinder. This would be awesome!
slantyyz
2 years ago |Yes, it would be awesome, but look at Sony’s recent design language.
Their designs tend to play it safe with traditional designs. They also like to go small and thin, which might be impressive at first, but even the NEX has a traditional but flattened DSLR look, minus the viewfinder bump.
It would be a huge (but pleasant) surprise if Sony were to take a Leica-like design for any of their products, but I doubt any of the big 3 Japanese manufacturers would take that type of design risk, because they make more money off Joe Q. Public than Fred the Camera Nerd.
Joe Q. Public thinks a Leica-like design represents obsolete technology in the same way he thinks that you can never have enough megapixels.

2 years ago |without an optical rangefinder it will never be a digital CLE.
The best they can do is give it an optical viewfinder a la X100, but I bet they won’t do it. And I don’t think they or anyone other than Fuji will be coming out with hybrid viewfinder like the X100 this year.
Besides, rangefinder market is still a niche market, the average camera users won’t appreciate or won’t like the rangefinder way of “seeing”
Jackie CHAN
2 years ago |If you know what is relly rangefinder CLE, optical viewfinder should not be considered in the next generation of digital CLE.
If next genertaion of CLE has an optical viewfinder, using tele lens shall be a big problem.
I can say, EVF should be the good role of solving this problem.
iwaki
2 years ago |Again, then it won’t be a rangefinder ROFL.
out there.
I use rangefinders exclusively, I would also love a digital CLE. As a rangefinder user, tele lenses I think are not interesting, if you want to use tele and you see the EVF way then don’t use rangefinder at all. There are enough EVF solutions and even optical SLR
Obviously you’re not a rangefinder user.
Do you know what a rangefinder is?
In-case people are still confused or insisting, X100 is NOT a rangefinder, it maybe close to be a replacement for a rangefinder user, but it will never be a rangefinder. Because guess what, it has no rangefinder!
Carl
2 years ago |Theoretically, it would be possible to make a variable baselength rangefinder, with a range sufficient to focus medium tele lenses (say, up to 200mm f4). It would be rather complex, though, and I can’t see a company like Leica bothering.

2 years ago |Why bother with an optical viewfinder? It makes no sense for NEX to have a x100 style hybrid. The optical part of it is not an actual rangefinder (there goes the appeal of legacy glass on NEX). It would add pointless complexity and cost and offer very little utility compared to a quality EVF. Parallax problems, very difficult to manual focus, only corresponds to a very limited set of focal lengths, no depth of field feedback whatsoever. Not worth the bother.

How much for a Sony CZ 35/2.0 for a NEX?
Will it be cheaper than a A-Mount Zeiss of the same quality?
When Sony really announces a product like a lens how long after the announcement will it ship?
Sony has made several announcements about a rumored telephoto and keeps pushing it back.
I’ve waited many months for Sigma to ship a newly announced lens and Sony took its time shipping the CZ 24/2.0 A-Mount.

I care about NEX because it will work with all the lenses, macro and micro equipment that I already have. No other camera has such a small distance from lens flange to sensor.
The current lens lineup doesn’t matter at all – I would rather buy the body only, with no Sony lens.
The only question will be whether the sensor is good enough.

2 years ago |Hahaha again. The X100 has both an optical and EVF hybrid viewfinder. The proposed Nex 7 has only EVF.
The X-100 is a rangefinder with fixed lens. The proposed NEX7 is a direct view EVF camera with interchangable lenses. The X-100 has a tiny fast pancake lens. The NEX range has none.
There really isn’t any useful comparison between the X-100 and any proposed NEX7 except that both have an APS-C sensor and the bodies are small compared to a traditional DSLR.
Come on, publish real news. Like where is the next Sony Alpha Fullframe DSLR? Where are the Sony Alpha lenses? Where are the NEX fast small lenses?

2 years ago |As a NEX-5 owner, I’m getting more and more frustrated at Sony’s progress in developing the range into a proper system. It currently has just three dedicated lenses – one of which is unaffordable, leaving just two. The e-mount macro was announced over a month ago, but there’s still no sign of it being available until at least September/October. Meanwhile, they have already announced the C5 – but not not yet selling it – and, according to the rumour below, the 7 is “coming in late August”. (Does that mean announced or sold?) So that will be FOUR bodies and effectively TWO lenses, which is a long way from presenting any kind of comparison with DSLR systems. Olympus are way ahead of that with the PEN (although I defend the Sony technology and quality). And we haven’t yet seen any e-mount contribution from Sigma, Tamron etc.
So, come on, where are the rumours to cheer me up?
horst
2 years ago |Good points, Justin.
It could be argued that the Nex 3/5 are old models, and only the Nex C3 is current, but it is still a fact that lenses are missing, the lens roadmap is unreliable, and recent rumors suggest the Nex line might take a turn .
NEXfive
2 years ago |You’re right, Justin. So far the the NEX-System including the NEX-FS100 only makes sense when using (old) manual lenses. Since Firmware 04 with Focus Peaking my NEX-5 is absolutely awesome for that and fortunately that’s nearly all I personally need (except a super wide angle). But to compete on the actual photography market the E-Mount lens situation is ridiculous.

2 years ago |If it doesn’t fit in your pocket, what purpose is a mirrorless camera to someone who shoots a variety of subjects which includes fast action/sports? The Sony a55/33 is far better choice. Only slightly larger, with all the capabilities of the NEX’s PLUS MUCH faster and more accurate phase-detect AF, EVF AND dozens of more lenses! Sorry, I don’t get NEX.

Larry
2 years ago |It still will not be “pocketable”, except with the too-wide, too slow e-mount pancake. It will still have slow contrast-detect AF. What is the big deal with the tiny body when you place a big lens on it? PS: Had a NEX-3. Absolutely fine for a walk-about snap-shot camera. But so are the dozens of other point-and-shoots at a fraction of the price! I still think the manufacturers have a way to go to find that step-up from point-and-shoot to interchangeable lens niche. Sony’s got the sensor and the software right. There’s hope.

To kill the competition, you have to be in the same market first, right ?
The Nex is competing with APS-C cameras – and with an EVF, it will likely be in SLR territory in terms of size, but out of its depth re. everything else.
Remember the Sony R1 ? I still have one, it’s great in some respects, and utterly uncompetitive in most .
And to be frank – why buy a Sony camera, when there is a Canon of a similar size and with the same sensor size ?
I hope the Nex doesn’t go the way of the R1, a concept abandoned before it was fully explored .

2 years ago |Each time it’s the same thing, “I want a EVF, I want faster AF…”
The Nex-5 is already a very good camera and concept, not perfect though…
Of course it miss manual control, but with the last firmware it’s really easy to focus with manual lenses !… EVF will make it bigger and everybody wants it “poketable” ???.. What’s the matter, do you forget that a EVF is nothing but a small screen !!???

2 years ago |X100 is not a direct NEX competitor – X100 tradesoff the flexibility of interchangeable lenses for more compact dimensions. Which is why X100 is much more of a niche product, whereas NEX and m43 are comparatively more mainstream. And in any case for NEX to compete with X100 it needs to have a high-quality wide-normal pancake lens. There is not thing in current NEX lens lineup which will allow the NEX-7 to be have a form factor anywhere close to X100 for a similarly capable lens. If the upcoming 24mm zeiss is indeed going to be a pancake then things might change a bit – but off course the Nex-7 + zeiss 24mm combination is likely to be more expensive than an X100.
