(SR4) NEX-F5 with 16 mpix sensor and 180 degree flip screen and WiFi!
What you see here on top is the just announced NEX-F3. And according to top sources also the upcoming new Sony NEX-F5 will share the same 180 degree flip screen and 16 Megapixel sensor. One of the main differences between the two cameras will be the integrated WiFi feature of the NEX-F5! As you may know Samsung was the first to announce mirrorless cameras with integrated WiFi (like the just released Samsung NX210). I think WiFi is a must have feature. But so are new lenses, and these are also coming along the NEX-F5. Stay tuned on SAR as usual!

2 years ago |wi-fi in a camera like 5N a must have? Are we crazy?
admin
2 years ago |yep. To share and to stream your photos on your computer. All cameras will do that soon.
Juan
2 years ago |May be useful but not a “must have”. Extract the card from the camera and plug it in the computer takes no effort.
Personally I don’t care about wifi in a camera.
hanugro
2 years ago |you will if it allows you to control and live-view camera via wifi.
Sky_walker
2 years ago |woh… live-view through wi-fi compatibile with the new iPad?
Dream setup for me!
Wish Sony would create something like that one day… just imagine the comfort of working with a 10” ultra-high res screen showing you frame, exact focus, DoF before taking the shot!
Hurl
2 years ago |Great! In general I don’t think that Wi-fi is a must for a camera. But if we could control a camera remotely from one smartphone… this would be nice. We could place our camera in strange positions an check what is being focused from the phone. It could also work as a remote shutter.
But… is this going to happen? If this wi-fi is only going be an easier way of copying files to the PC, it won’t be a must for me.
klw10
2 years ago |Well, it would make it nice when your laptop or device does not have a card reader built in and you do not have an external card reader with you. I say it is a great idea and not just for that. It would be useful in other situations as well.
J-Man
2 years ago |I remember people saying the same thing about auto focus and live view.
babbit
12 months ago |Yup. I remember when companies introduced Autofocus as the next “must-have” feature, photographers were complaining that it was an expensive and useless feature and that the common folks would never want something as “complex” as autofocus.
Rooru S.
2 years ago |eerrrmmmm does that wifi enable us to take a picture via cellphone or computer or even enable us to see from our devices what the camera is looking at?
The Lotus Eater
2 years ago |What if the user only shoots RAW? I do.
You still have to copy over to the computer and post process. I would have no interest in WiFi streaming from the camera directly to view photos, only to copy ready for processing, and as others state, removing the card is not hard or time-consuming.
WiFi sounds like a feature that would interest casual shooters more than enthusiasts. It should have been in the F3, but maybe not the F5. I’d rather put the money towards a built-in EVF or tri-navi.
Booe
2 years ago |1.Going to a minilab to develop film isn’t hard either. Why don’t you buy a film camera?
2.There is a slight chance that one would erroneously leave the card in cardreader and go out with an empty camera.
3.That is false dichotomy.
Sky_walker
2 years ago |1. Cause developing RAWs doesn’t cost you any money,
2, Happen to me once. Lucky: I always keep spare memory card in my camera bag.
3. Not really.
IMO WiFi makes a lot of sense when it’s used for wireless tethering. Otherwise it’s just a slower way to download pictures to PC – not really useful nor handy. You can get that already anyway – just buy Eye-Fi card.
The Lotus Eater
2 years ago |1) There is no minilab within quick walking distance of my house. My spare room is 10 seconds away. Plus film costs money. With digital I can take 100s of pics in one session for free, well unless you count the costs of camera wear and tear, battery charging etc. It works out cheaper anyway.
2) Possible, but I always have a spare in my camera bag. Covers me against card failure and forgetfulness.
3) Maybe, but looking at the responses here would suggest not too many are that excited about WiFi.
Vlad
2 years ago |1. Developing RAWs cost you time.
2. Possible.
3. It is a false dichotomy. There’s the option to not use the feature, if you don’t wish to.
4. Wireless tethering – awesome.
5. Download to a device you carry with yourself instead of having a second card – awesome (or just making a backup).
6. The increase in price of the camera due to the wifi will still be cheaper than buying an eye-fi card.
7. I can’t believe people are complaining about an additional feature. Buy a Leica then.
Booe
2 years ago |1. And same for Eye-fi cards: five times more price, less volume and speed. Never have seen them IRL too.
WiFi can be useful in suprising ways:
http://www.switched.com/2008/06/06/thief-caught-after-stolen-wi-fi-camera-sends-images-home/
You don’t know yet if F5 supports tethering or not. And that is software, done by different team from who designs hardware.
I personally have no use for HDMI – but somehow I don’t see numerous comments about HDMI connectivity is useless, nor do I write them.
Vlad
2 years ago |You will be free to not use the feature, you know. It won’t add anything to the camera’s dimension and will probably increase the price by 5 bucks.
The Lotus Eater
2 years ago |For the record, I wouldn’t begrudge the presence of WiFi in a camera, even if I have no use for it – my original post was simply intended to oppose Admin’s claim that it is a “must have” feature.
Carl
2 years ago |Agreed…far from being a “must have”. IMO, it’s more a consumer gadget than a photography requirement. However, it can be useful for linking with a tablet when taking studio-photos or shooting in awkward angles.
I think the wifi is more for the “facebook generation” people who wants to share every picture of their life…
Vivek
2 years ago |Nokia Pureview will do that and more, it can even function as a phone!! Lots of “must have” features it has! LOL!
hs
2 years ago |No, not crazy – it´s for nonwipers! They add a LTE-Phone too so it will fit for all who can´t use an egg-phone (egg=ei=i for non-germans

Crix
2 years ago |I need Wifi neither. If the F5 has nothing else to offer, I will haapily continue to use my 5N. A hotshoe would make things different. So remote flashs could be easily triggered.
Linh
2 years ago |I don’t think WiFi is a must-have for a photographer anyway, especially if you shoot RAWs. It might be convenient for /some/ purposes, but nothing we can’t do without.
Vivek
2 years ago |If Wifi is the only major distinction, I will go with the F3.
I think the Fuji X-Pro-1 is looking a lot more attractive now!
Rabbit
2 years ago |Do you really know what X-PRO1 is? If I were you, I won’t compare x-pro1 to nex5n or nexf5, totally different product, designed for different market.
Daemonius
2 years ago |Not really. X-Pro 1 should be for “pro” photographers, but in real life, NEX system is much more “pro” than X-Pro 1. Cause at least it works in some usable way.
X-Pro 1 is very quirky even tho it produces really beautiful photos, but only with Fuji lens. And it will show you way to mental assylum pretty soon. As all Fuji cameras, exceptional, but in same time drives you nuts.
NEX on other hand (especially NEX-5N) is more than usable without much quirks. At least for me, as only thing that camera controls for me is shutter speed and ISO.
Vlad
2 years ago |I think, he can compare whatever the heck he wants.
sgoldswo
2 years ago |Have you actually tried to use an X-Pro1? It’s actually a lot easier to use than my NEX and it works well with non-native lenses. Don’t get me wrong, I like my NEX 7 and I’ll keep it to use with my 18-200 lens and as a backup to my DSLR, but it’s not in the same league IQ wise as the X-Pro1 unless you spend quite a bit of time PPing the RAW files. The AF complaints about the X-Pro1 are basically bunk.
babbit
12 months ago |I agree with everything except the last sentence where AF complaints are bunk. I have an X100 with the latest updated firmware and used to have an E-P2. The X100 is the only non P&S camera that makes the E-P2 seem like it has super fast AF speeds. The X-Pro1 is slightly faster than the X100 in AF speed in my experience (even though many people say the updated X100 is faster), which makes the X-Pro 1 the slowest digital camera with interchangeable lens ever made.
whistler
2 years ago |What a piece of rubbish. I think many many users dont care about wifi. What for will it be good in this type of camera? And what will be the price difference? This is ridiculous, Sony is flooding the market with new cameras in this segment which compete against each other.
Vivek
2 years ago |I think Samsung and others are going to beat the crap out of Sony again. Sony is going to play follow the leader just like their TV stuff.
doraemonboi
2 years ago |Samsung… I don’t really like them… No offense, personally opinion.
Vivek
2 years ago |I don’t like their current NX cameras either. But they have a market because of the unimaginative Sony creations/vacuum and they can bring out something useful. Also, Canon are likely to launch a new system that I would be looking at closely. If Canon would allow their new wireless flash to work on their mirrorless, it would seal the deal.
Sky_walker
2 years ago |If anything – Canon is a threat for NEX. Samsung is a joke with their cameras. Perhaps in 2-3 years their technology might grow up a bit, but for now they don’t have any body I’d like to keep if given for free, not even saying about buying one.
(on a good side though – they do have some very interesting lenses)
Daemonius
2 years ago |Samsung NX system is actually pretty good. Its just more for photographers than anyone else and need some careful work to get best results. Samsung kinda inherited or somehow “taken” some Pentax traits. Unfortunately along with their marketing as it seems.
Only fault that NX20 has is movie recording button placed exactly like on NEX-7.
Otherwise its nice camera and nice system. Bit more complete than NEX. But not that complete as m4/3s.
It should work tethered/remote controled with Android phones (NX system). It doesnt much for now tho..
Wi-fi isnt bad technology, just its strongly overused these days which causes all sorts of trouble. I wouldnt buy camera just cause it can do wi-fi, as even old 1DsMK2 can too with proper equip.

l
2 years ago |Sony for the F5 please keep the same build and SIZE as the 5n, and get a super fast autofocus in it
Nobody
2 years ago |WiFi IMO is completly unnecessary in any camera. Why one would need it? For posting images directly to facebook? Not interested. To copy images over WiFi to your computer/laptop? Taking card out and inserting it into reader isn’t that hard and time consuming. Not to mention that you’ll either loose one button for fast access to copying or will have to cruise through menus to initiate transfer. Not interested in either of these. The only good thing I can think of is full remote camera control through WiFi, but since Sony killed tethering in A77 and doesn’t included it in NEX-7 I doubt that lower cameras will get such feature.
Also its bad they’re going with this stupid self-portrait flip up screen. I personally most often use opposite flip direction on my NEX (to shoot at angle from eye level or to shoot over something / from over my head).
I really hope that Sony will not go down the way where new camera means same camera with more gadgets and new name.
However it is one good thing about NEX-F5 – 5N price will drop
C
2 years ago |I can just imagine the battery drain on this wifi!
With wifi on .. 2-minute video and 50 RAW files!
nagi
2 years ago |WoW… I liked the looks of previous NEX cameras, I love the NEX-7, but this? This is just fugly. A rectangle strapped onto the 5N.
And to comment on the flip screen and wifi: the flip screen can be useful, I hope it will still retain its downward angle. As for the WiFi, meh. For me, it is just a gimmick.

2 years ago |Wifi is for lazy bun, and many lazy bun nowadays.

Rooru S.

Nobody
2 years ago |Nope. Rumor says it will be same screen as in F3. No more shooting from over your head. Sorry.

frodelil

2 years ago |A 180º screen would give me even better handling in a tight spot, like an aircraft seat. really lovd my nex-5n on my last flight with my kid (2years old). Got a lot of pics from angels that would demand a lot of guessing with my nikon dslr. a 180º would allow even bigger flexibility, and don’t mean that i have to be in the pics my self for enjoying souch a screen.
Sky_walker
2 years ago |Seen the A77 screen? It’s by far more flexible and useful in real life situations than the screen on F3 (or any Nikon camera for that matter)
Rooru S.
2 years ago |Yes, but then I’m going to hold the camera in an awkward position. I like to hold the camera in a secure manner if I’m in a crowd trying to get a shot above everyone. I would like them (sony) to keep that 180º screen for people that wants to take pictures of themselves, only to the 3-series, and keep the current screen for the 5-series just like that. As much as the 180º screen allow greater flexibility, it’s only in certain situation as much as the current screen allows greater flexibility in other situations.
But if they keep going with the 5-series to change to a 180º flip screen, then I’m left to either, getting the 5N or the NEX-7.
Adam Maas
2 years ago |Or get the 5N, which is a pretty big upgrade over the 5 in terms of IQ and has the better flip design.
Rooru S.
2 years ago |yes, but I was expecting a newly developed camera without the clicking issue and I don’t want to buy it and send it to Sony for repair as I live outside of the US and the service center in my country don’t think they have the means of providing the fix (got to ask them)
Also, I also tend to skip 1 generation between upgrades as many times the 3rd generation include more things for the same money compared to the 2nd generation when it was launched.

2 years ago |What ?? Wifi .. Oh come on for the love of god !!. That means one dial will be dedicated for it.. Why not use it for somethig better .. ?? And the 180 screen again .. I think the best thing about the news today was that it’s still 16.1mp !!.

2 years ago |3G is a must have feature. So we can import to Tablet and upload to Web. So cool. No need wifi feature.
Rooru S.
2 years ago |3G will be harder to implement than WiFi. With WiFi, you just send them to your storage device (tablet, laptop, cellphone or hard disk with Wifi capability) and after it, you can upload them with whatever device with 3G you have.
Why have 3G plan for a tablet, or a cellphone, and another one for your camera if you only need one for your cellphone and get the images from your camera via wifi? I would rather have WiFi than 3G or 4G in a camera.
JonasM
2 years ago |Admin, OT, but any intel on where the SEL24F18Z is available? I’ve tried Japan, Thailand, Vietnam as well as France and Germany with no luck….

2 years ago |And there we go again.
Whenever any company tries to do ANYthing different with their cameras (let’s say Face Detection, In-Camera HDR/DRO, Live View, in-built GPS, video recording and so on) many people start yelling “this is ridiculous”, “I don’t need it” *yawn*
Only until those things become standard stuff on any camera and then, suddenly, most of those complainers start saying ‘what? There’s no *insert feature here*? That’s a deal breaker to me!’.
I would happily transfer my files through wi-fi (as I actually already do with the pics I take with my smartphone). Not having to plug a cable, or having to take the memory card out is a nice thing to have, MUCH more practical.
Loosen up, people
Adam Maas
2 years ago |Software adds are no big deal, but new hardware increases power draw and decreases battery life. And quite frankly it’s going to be slow WiFi, you don’t have the power available to make it fast so pulling the card and dumping via a reader will be MUCH faster.
And quite frankly, you can have WiFi right now if you want it, via an Eye-Fi card. Just like GPS, rather have it as a dongle so I’m not spending money on it (and those who want it can have it).
Personally the F5 looks like a downgrade to me, but more for the less useful 180 degree screen (as compared to the 5N’s articulation) than the WiFi.
Neo NiGHTS ®
2 years ago |Yes, I know that wi-fi would draw more battey. But so does GPS. And that can be disabled, can’t it? With my smartphone I enable the wi-fi only when I need it, don’t leave it on all the time. I’d think that in-camer wi-fi can be turned off as well.
So, battery cosumption shouldn’t be a real issue here.
Also, let’s keep in mind that the rumour states *ONE* difference between the F3 and F5. It never said that having wi-fi would be the ONLY difference between them.
Seeing how Sony is drawing a clearer line between their SLTs, it’s the be thought that they’ll (try to) do the same thing with the NEX line as well.
Still, I think this is too much fuss over nothing.
Sky_walker
2 years ago |No, the GPS can’t be disabled! Governments will spy on you! Beware!
*yep, that’s a reference to other poster some time ago playing 007 with his SLT*

passer-by
12 months ago |Wait for NEX-F7??
Catalin
2 years ago |If it’s the same sensor and the NEX-F5 is bigger, like on the NEX-F3, then I have no regrets whatsoever.
I bought an Eye-Fi card ( http://www.eye.fi ) and added Wi-Fi to my NEX-5n in no time. The NEX-5n has Eye-Fi support already, there are dedicated menus and modes of operation built in firmware. Since Eye-Fi is concentrating all of their efforts on Wi-Fi for cameras, I can bet it will always have more features and it will be a better option than the native WiFi on the NEX-F5.
It is really a great addition. Right now, if you have an Eye-Fi card and an Android phone or iPhone in your pocket, you can set it up such that when you select the “Protect” option for a picture in camera, it will be automatically uploaded on Facebook via the phone, and all this without having to be near an access point ! I can bet the NEX-F5 won’t be able to do this.

2 years ago |Flip screen and wifi? Looks like they’re targeting the teenage girl market rather than people who take photography seriously.
jack
2 years ago |180 degrees does not mean that they will eliminate the extra hinge pivot point as in the current 5/5N design. You would just need to turn that hinge layout upside down and locate the screen pivot point at the top-most location. Once the second hinge moves the screen away from the body, then the OLED (?) touchscreen should be able to pivot downwards. I use this feature quite often.
How about using this wi-fi for more integration with the tablets (Android), Xperia phones, and televisions, and even the Vita? Could we use the screens on those devices to view images (RAW or JPEG)? How about linking up to the cell phone (Xperia) to use its GPS?
Providing an adapter to use the larger flashes would also be great.

2 years ago |Those of you that are dissing the rumored inclusion of WiFi have the old-school type of mindset that is important for Sony to leave behind if it has any hopes of returning to the top of the electronics industry. It’s easy to make fun of WiFi and the social media implications it may bring, but I think it is one of the most important features for Sony to include in cameras going forward (although Sony reps have said as much on their own). I have an NEX-5N and 5 lenses, yet when I’m at home I reach for my iPhone 90% of the time I want to take one or two quick pictures to share online. Sure it “only takes a few minutes” for me to stick the memory card in my PC, resize the image, and upload it to my preferred image sharing site, but that is still significantly longer than the 1-2 seconds it takes for my iPhone to share images to all of my other network-connected devices; of course adding it to DropBox will take another second or two. A lot of you may snicker at the thought, but I frequent several large forums where there are plenty of users with a similar mindset; phone for a couple of quick pictures, camera for multiple photos or events.
Sony just recently launched their PlayOnline cloud-sharing service, so it’d be crazy to think they don’t want to include that service in every electronic device they release going forward, in an attempt to effectively copy Apple’s iCloud service. Yes it would be playing catch-up with Apple, but it puts them ahead of Samsung, LG, Panasonic, Olympus, Canon, Nikon, etc.
I’m not sure why some of you are concerned with battery life, since obviously it’ll be optional to have the antenna powered.

2 years ago |The hack into Sony’s network is certainly high profile, but no where near isolated. I know of several very large companies who are clients of the company I work for, who have been hacked and had elements of their customer’s details taken. Measures were put into place to fix this and in the same manner so has Sony.
Josh had a nicely reasoned viewpoint and just being negative without knowing what will actually be implemented is a little cynical. Personally, I like the user experience when using the PS3 UI – who says we get something closer to that then say the cr*ppy Connect software the Sony MP3 players used to use
hobel
12 months ago |User experience on your PS3 might be nice, but how often does your PS3 get stolen or lost?
A phone or camera is a dangerous place to store any valuable data in it.
A phone uses a PIN to protect your data.
Will the camera have at least a PIN as well?
Credentials for any online storage/Wifi access/social network whatsoever is valuable data, and deserves protection.
I just wonder if everybody thinks sony will do this right. We will see how they do it.
May be the eye-fi owners can describe how it is solved in the existing solution.

2 years ago |WiFi? Not interested, got nothing to Wi to my Fi.
180 degree flip screen? Rather have a screen that could flip sideways for when using the NEX in portrait (rotated 90 degrees). I tend to photograph people a lot in a somewhat lowered position with the NEX rotated in portrait. Flipping the screen up in that position (sideways in landscape) would be really great.
I wonder what else will be new with the F5, because I doubt this will be all.
Douglas Grillo
2 years ago |Wi-fi is useful is leave you control the camera (Tether), if don´t, i see not mayor point to do this, the Flip screen (something i love) must be replaced for something like the A77, not like the 3F, that is for Facebook teenagers. The Nex5n has been used for professional work too! so, Sony must consider include advance features and not only Gimmicks features that look cool in a sticker on the box for newest buyers.
I know, many of you will say the most professional Nex is the 7, but for many of us the 5n has some useful image advantages over the Nex7, if the 5F is just a cosmetic change like the 3F (ugly by the way) i think i will pass, and not just of model.
Sony have the opportunity to convert the Nex line in a sales savior, but need to improve with advance features, they already have 1500 P&S cameras (sarcasm), why need to convert the Nex in another one.
P.D:
My Ps3 wi-fi is a piece of sh##, why will be different on a smaller body?
My two cents.
Zeus
2 years ago |I agree! Don’t really care or crying for WiFi. As others have said, not THAT hard to take card out and slide into card reader on computer. I’m sure someday with added functions, such as viewing what the camera is focusing on from an iPad, that may come in handy for a few novelty images…
But I’m more concerned about improved AF, a screen that could swivel in portrait mode (would be nice), continued improvement to the UI and low light ISO IQ. If we getting an F3 with WiFi and nothing more, I’ll just keep shooting my 5n.
Hopefully some new lenses that are exciting come out.

2 years ago |The NEX-F3 has 1080/30p video, but the NEX-5n has 1080/60p. Double the frame rate.
The NEX-F5 will have over the F3:
- In-camera lens correction
- ISO 100
- 1080/60p
- touch screen
- Wi-Fi
Currently, the NEX-5n JPEGS are better quality than NEX-C3. Maybe this will also be true when comparing NEX-F3 to NEX-F5 ? Who knows.

2 years ago |I’ve read that the group that manages the Sony Pro Video is a different division than the NEX and Alpha cameras and maybe this just another example of the differences between them.
We continue to see new camera bodies replacing last year’s model much like the auto industry, with few real differences between them. Sony’s marketing strategy seems built on promoting sales of toy’s and not tools for the photographer at the mid-level and lower entry-level products like the 3 and 5 series NEX and Alpha. Personally, I’m waiting to see what, or even IF Sony plans as its replacement for the NEX-7 or better!
Clyde
2 years ago |Instead of changing screen for facebook photos, and losing overhead shooting, would have been better to put low res rear facing camera on back (like my phone), and not lose functionality on screen.
Does anyone really need 16mp for facebook resolution snapshot uploads? Rear cam could be programmed for a quick 3mp shot and auto upload to satisfy FB junkies.
Mike
2 years ago |It makes me sad to see where Sony puts the focus. I hope this general product strategy does not translate to the A-mount, otherwise my days as a Sony user will come to an end soon.

2 years ago |Am I the only one hoping for nex 7 style tri navi controls? Or at least at least another control dial in the f5. An a37 viewfinder would be nice too in fact a budget version of the Nex 7 without the alpha hotshoe slighly lower build quality etc would be just what the doctor ordered. Come on sony you can sell a Nex equivalent of the a37 just remove the phase detect and shrink the body.
Clyde
2 years ago |Yes I was expecting a budget NEX-7 too. Instead they make a boated NEX-3.

2 years ago |We always get what no one asks for. We never get what is suggested to take this platform seriously. We lose good features for sake of gimmick features.
Sony, I love you. But as you plan the NEX-G5, could we please get some features that we’ve been asking for since the beginning?
STOP DUMBING DOWN THE NEX SYSTEM!!!
Build the NEX-PRO Sony. No more sprinkles.
You’ve got that covered now so build a NEX-PRO.
Take out all shooting modes aside from M, A, S, P… Nothing else.
Streamline menu system and take out all duplicate scales and non functioning buttons in RAW mode.
Articulate screen in vertical mode.
Wired remote for stills and video.
Tethering for full computer control and monitoring.
Smart TC in RAW.
Sweep Pano in RAW, or at least a higher res jpg.
Diagonal scrolling in magnified view, like Alpha.
Editing in magnified view, like Alpha.
Manual audio control.
Pro grade wireless flash transmitter that actually works… IR not flash.
Video button lock-out option.
Two stage option for ISO control so it’s not so easy to change accidentally.
Settings memory.
_________
Build a NEX-PRO for serious use and hear everyone sing your praises.

This is turning into a tragedy.

2 years ago |It amazes me that Sony managed to advertise their NEX body with the same lens over and over again. Wouldn’t they feel a little bit ashamed. NEX owner since day one, but I can’t help myself drooling over the micro 4/3 fast prime lens, with AF. Didn’t I mention their small size.

2 years ago |Admin: “I think WiFi is a must have feature.”
Thank you. I will sell off all my cameras that don’t have WiFi.
Garron
2 years ago |I hope wifi becomes a standard feature across the range. Make it work with the new 802.11ac standard and we don’t then have to worry about data transfer speeds once other technologies catch up.
To illustrate a case pertinent to me, I travel for work a fair bit and would love to use this to upload from various hotels to my NAS at home. For large volumes of data, leaving it to do this overnight when I sleep will save me having to worry about the hassle of going via my work laptop. It also means I am not carrying pocketfuls of memory cards some obnoxious official may want to review and delete photos from….
Controlling via wifi is another plus if implemented. I would love to see the sensor image translated onto a large screen tablet to verify what I am shooting/focusing on.
In addition, it would finally make the option for apps a reality for cameras. This was never really feasible via computers – too fiddly and not immediate. Sony, build an Appstore or base your next operating system on a variant of Android
This is the kind of thing we can achieve with this new technology that could only be dreamed of not so long ago. Of course if people can only think wifi equates to teens updating Facebook and Instagram … well that is your lack of imagination and Sony cannot do much about that.
Catalin
2 years ago |Buy an Eye-Fi SD card. Does everything you said (including uploading to your NAS at home via your iPhone or Android phone. It can be set up to only upload to your NAS when you have WiFi access on your phone (in order to avoid 3G costs).
Clyde

2 years ago |Eye-Fi works great for what it is.
However, means you are in effect buying a new wifi adapter for each card and in anycase misses the biggest factor for making something standard.
Once we have a standard like wifi part of the entire range, interesting things can happen. For example, peripherals for lighting systems, remote controls and other such things. Or, if we go more left-field, how about syncing multiple cameras at once? (a la Matrix type thing).
Clyde
2 years ago |No one is saying that WiFi is bad. A welcome addition no doubt.
Garron “Controlling via wifi is another plus if implemented.”
Don’t hold your breath. I’d like to see it happen too. But in reality, it’s just another item on the wish list of fantasy. Let’s not read into potentiality with a company that never goes all the way. If full WiFi control is not announced upon release of the camera, then I have no hope of it ever being implemented later on. That’s not how Sony works. We’ll have to hope and wait for it on next years model.
Garron “Of course if people can only think wifi equates to teens updating Facebook and Instagram … well that is your lack of imagination and Sony cannot do much about that.”
My lack of imagination wants to carry a small system camera in the field and use wired remote for bracketing raw image stacking that is perfectly aligned. It wants real time remote control of camera mounted on car bumper or in the bird house. It wants faster in camera editing features to cut down post editing time.
Don’t get me wrong… WiFi is a great convenience. I’m glad it’s there. But it comes closer to competing with camera phones rather than competing with mid-upper tier DSLR’s… and THAT was the promise of NEX. The promise of NEX was to produce a small body mirrorless component system that could compete with serious DSLR. That promise is fading fast.
Garron
2 years ago |Reading that a couple of times I don’t think we are disagreeing on anything…
If we have wifi we want it implemented well -> too allow all those things and more via a standard communications mechanism and protocol. Nothing to not like there. If Sony are brave and open up the operating system software, then we can also enter a brave new world of Apps – someone will eventually do this and win big. You need wifi or 3G/4G for that to happen.
Clyde
2 years ago |I’m all for an APP Store… First brave monkey smart enough to allow for that wins.
Only question is the control. Like Apple, where everything goes through them for profit and compatible assurance… Or like Android, the wild wild west never know what you get but get it cheap without restraints.
Then we could start whining for interchangeable chips/backs… to keep camera body same but upgrade IQ like medium format systems. Sony sells chips directly to other manufacturers. Why not sell interchangeable chips to user?
Garron
2 years ago |Something like the Ricoh GXR range?
Just wonder how feasible that would be for the non-medium format cameras and their faster technology refreshes…
Regarding the Appstore – I would have thought the easiest option would be to implement the camera O/S in Android (Sonys can reuse experience from their Xperia phone range or even their wrist watch phone thing that runs on Android) and then use what is already there to handle the distribution and payments for apps.
Clyde
2 years ago |I would love an Android based system. Unrestricted but riskier. No need to get approval from Apple. Or maybe Sony would require a key for approved apps… I don’t really care. Just like to see someone with big enough kahoona’s to make it so.
GXR is interesting and should be applauded. Innovation like that should be encouraged. Still no one is gutsy enough to release the full package with quality EVF and fully articulating screen.

2 years ago |Till now nothing interesting. Wi-fi, flip…toys. AF needs serious upgrade, AWB also can be better, AA filter can be thinner, working ISO can be higher, possibility to change ISO with 1/3 stop step can be provided, controlling external flashes must be added. Those things, not toys.

2 years ago |Not very excited about the wifi, not something I would use. Also not at all excited about the new rotating screen, getting rid of downward angle is taking away a useful feature and adding a gimmick one.
Also not a fan of a bigger body. The nex 5 is a perfect size. Can’t see myself wanting this camera plus EVF, the nex 7 seems more and more worth the splurge.
Clyde
2 years ago |The promise of NEX was to produce a small body mirrorless component system that could compete with serious DSLR. That promise is fading fast.
Keep your promise Sony.

2 years ago |I for one would love to have a slightly bigger body than the NEX-5N. Yes, dragging DSLR gear weighing a a ton is no fun, but holding a 5N with two fingers and poking the tiny buttons with a finger nail are no joy either. Besides, big long lenses and a tiny thin body just don’t match well.
I agree with all others about the undesirable “new feathers”. Sony, can you give me at least one real useful feature such as an EVG or one more control wheel/button for me to upgrade to F5 from my 5N please?
Pei
2 years ago |Metal body
Integrated flash
Touch screen with touch focus and shutter

All in a body smaller than F3 because metal are thinner. Not bad.
F7 will have better sensor, EVF, better sealing, hot shoe and more external controls.

2 years ago |I didn’t read all comments, but I feel in photography there is no place for this feature. It’s a camera, it should develop for more high IQ & so on.
Not a silly one in camera.

2 years ago |Packing a computer out into the field just to use wifi sounds awful, no matter what size computer. My load is big enough already and high capacity cards are relatively cheap. Even my bridge camera I have two cards with over 10,000 shot capacity between them. Wifi is way down at the bottom of the list of things Sony needs to do to be attractive. They need to work on improving IQ and photographic part of their cameras, especially in still photography.
Clyde
2 years ago |They’re obviously not thinking any further than in home cat photos. The furthest excursion is the back yard garden… and how cool to WiFi from there.
But field use? I agree all the storage needed will fit nicely within the hidden pocket of my Levi’s.
And though I still have no ability to auto bracket landscapes with ANY type of remote, at least I’ll be able to take better buddy shots with the bears. I wonder if smile detecting auto port will work with wildlife?
Judd
2 years ago |Wifi will be very useful with that flip up screen if you’re thinking of doing some video blogging in HD with a quality lens. The combination of those two new features will seriously expand the versatility of this camera. Very excited!
Mike
2 years ago |I thought about it twice. Now I’ve got hope and even wish it for the A-mount.
1. tethered shooting
2. more camera control
WiFi in a camera means it will have an IP address. It is straightforward to add a lightweight web-interface that allows more control over a camera than the menu. In its simplest form, why not browse the pictures on camera with your tablet PC.
The real hope I have is the following: if there is an IP address, there is probably also some security leak that can be exploited. Ideally to gain low-level access to the camera which would allow all kinds of hacks (think of Magic Lantern) that have not been possible before.

2 years ago |No fully articulated display still .
I was hoping Sony would move the 5 closer to a fully featured camera, too, by including a hotshoe .
It almost looks like the 7 was an accident, and the Nex line is moving closer to the P&S segment , while getting bigger at the same time .
Just when you think Sony is taking cameras seriously , they do a 180 and go all jpg shooter.

I want to here about IQ improvements on this new body.
Why can’t the LCD articulate like the Canon and Panasonics on the side.

2 years ago |There are at least 20 firmware fixes that need to be done by Sony so they just introduced a new camera with features that none of us need. I bet the firmware fixes for things like HDR bracketing, crappy video button and so many others will still need to be fixed even on this camera. The strategy by Sony must be beat us over the head with incremental updates and will forget all the problems.
Seeky
2 years ago |We have to realise that a NEX-F5 is not meant to be for us, it is meant for NEW customers! Those who have a NEX-5N have no reason to update to the successor of it, unless you have too much money. The real upgrade from the NEX-5/5N is the NEX-7 and it’s future brothers. Another thing: buy a camera as it is, don’t expect to get firmware updates for every particular thing you want to be adressed.
I would love to see a NEX F5 with one more dail and such things, but I don’t think the F5 is meant for us enthousiasts/hobbyists. This won’t be a rival of the NEX-7.

2 years ago |I like the old 5n screen. No need for flip screen to shoot self. Wifi will only drain the battery. I’d keep it turned off as i prefer to transfer directly from sd card, not even via usb cable. Too bad about the screen. I wanted to switch from m43 but looks like i’ll be waiting for G5. Arghhhh $ONY-$TYLE. Give me old screen and better everything else than 5n
What’s next, GPS and integrated facebook button like someone posted earlier??? fk $ony!

12 months ago |I’ve been reading posts here since months and this is my first one. I consider myself as i enthousiast and i want an upgrade from my compact. I wanted a 16mp with EVF because nex7 is not in my budget and i will have no use of 24px with my level yet. I think i will wait for a second hand nex7…
I think it’s not because Sony is not releasing products fulfilling my needs that they have a bad strategy: they know i want a nex and i will not go for a 4/3 or for bulky DSLR so they know I can wait to buy the one of the nex series at the right price. A company is position of monopole don’t need to move too fast, I think they dominate the hybrid system so they don’t have too much to listen to the pros demanding lenses or updates. Canon did the same thing with 500-550-600d
Still, i consider the nex system as the most serious option for my considering my need for compacity and control over depth of field.

11 months ago |Funny discussion. I found no real use for wi-fi there. Arguing with removing the card being too much work… oh gosh! The statement about the “must have” wi-fi must be a joke. It is not bad to have it but it is of zero value when deciding between two cameras for me. I prefer photography related features in the camera.

11 months ago |NX is a better overall system than NEX (much better lenses, better size IMHO), but NX new bodies are worse than NEX ones, technically speaking. They are terribly slow in processing, NX20 has a very bad sequential EVF, they have no focus peaking.
Besides NX bodies are too expensive for what they are.
If NX20 costed 600$, then it would be a great camera. It’s not at 1000+ $.
