(SR5) All you have to know about the NEX-C3 and A35

As I already told you I do expect Sony to release the new NEX-C3, A35, new NEX flash and the new Sony 30mm f/3.5 macro NEX lens on June 3. Today I got more info about both cameras. The NEX-C3 and A35 will be in Stock by early August. And here are the specs:
NEX-C3:
16 megapixel sensor,
surprise: 200-12800 ISO (where is the ISO 100?)
HD video recording (why no FullHD?)
25 AF
same 3inch LCD as the NEX-5
The camera will also have the new picture effects (the NEX-3 and NEX-5 will get them with a firmware update)
The battery life has been increased by 20% compared to the battery life of the NEX-5
Price $599
A35:
16 megapixel sensor,
100-12800 ISO
FullHD 1080 AVCHD
New tele-zoom high speed shooting mode with 7 fps (???)
Same picture effects as the NEX-C3
Price $599

2 years ago |Isn’t the A35 able to record longer video with image stabilization enabled? I think the big thing they wanted to fix was overheating issues with the A33.

2 years ago |I waited the NEX-C3 to enter in the photography world cause I received some really nice Zeiss C/Y lenses ( f/1,4 35,50,80, 15mm f/3,5 and a 180 f/2,8) and I wait for it since january…
By the way, since January, I reject my basic Sony DSC N-1 and I take no more photographs cause I saw & touched the power of the RAW quality with Photoshop & Lightroom…
I’ll take my holidays in July and I don’t know what to do… Of course I’ll regret it if I buy quickly the NEX-5 (I know myself) but I don’t know… Maybe a DSLR will be a good choice instead of a compact NEX-like.
As photographers, do you take your big/large DSLR everywhere you go? Is it not to complicated to bring it at dinners or drinks with friends?
What’s your behaviors? (and maybe your advices)
Thanks in advance.

2 years ago |Take my input with a grain of salt since I’m a total n00b (I don’t even own a camera yet)…
If you see yourself being a casual shooter (i.e. “drink/dinner with friends”) the NEX would be the ideal choice IMO. The only complaints are from the more hardcore guys who need their view finder and manual controls. But you can still do some serious stuff with the NEX. And if you find yourself getting more serious into photography down the line, then at that point you should think about upgrading to a full-fledged DSLR. Personally, this is the route I, myself, will be going with as I see the NEX as a great stepping stone into photography. I’m not so keen on lugging a fat camera around my neck at the moment so I see the compactness of the NEX to be a huge selling point. Well, that’s my two cents!

2 years ago |I went with a small SLT for everyday carry and a large SLR for dedicated photography outings. Your C/Y lenses will make the NEX system rival an A33/A55 in size due to the adapter that is needed.
Far better to get the Leitax conversions and a focus confirm chip (which also enables SSS if it has the correct focal length encoded) and use them on an A55 or the new A35 and reap the benefits of Image Stabilization. All of those Zeiss lenses will do well on an SLT except possibly the 15/3.5 (which isn’t up to the performance of modern equivalents. It was incredible in its day but UWA design has come a long way since 1975 when it was introduced). It’s a little more cost up front than a single adapter for the NEX but also nets you the benefit of supporting all A and E mount cameras (as well as any other mirrorless systems with an A mount adapter).
For regular adaptation use Rangefinder lenses are the best choice for a NEX, they maintain the small size better.

2 years ago |It is always a trade-off. NEX will be smaller, less analog controls, less battery. If you are really into photography, at some point the NEX will become an obstacle and you will want something more. But that shouldn’t stop you from buying it.
And, as Adam Maas said, do check the SLTs which are pretty much in-between the NEX and the DSLRs.

2 years ago |Many “real” photographers only need manual focus, aperture, shutter control and spot/center weighted metering (and, I guess ISO, if you shoot digital.) In fact, I SOLD my A700/A900 and all of my DSLR lenses after using the NEX-5 for a few months.
Sure, if you want to be a sport shooter, the NEX isn’t the tool. But, if you go get yourself some good priced manual lenses and a NEX camera, you can do many types of photography very well.

2 years ago |Thanks a lot every one.
If I make the point my destiny is to wait and to be patient…
In both of cases, the Nex-C3 and the A35 will come in few months and I always prefere to wait and buy the product at its release.
Thanks again !

2 years ago |Going on holidays in July, too.
Hence, I bought a NEX-3 now because the NEC-C3′s advantages keep within reasonable limits.
Voohoo
2 years ago |I’ll be going on holiday around the same time and have been thinking of getting a NEX now as well. I agree, it doesn’t seem like the NEX-C3 is a big enough upgrade to be a must-have.

2 years ago |What do you mean by “FullHD”? Do you mean 1080 vs 720?
Voohoo
2 years ago |Yep, “Full HD” refers to 1080.

2 years ago |Two important points haven’t been stressed:
- both A35 a new NEX have only fixed LCDs (no swivel anymore)
- A35 misses the digital level gauge from A33 / A55

2 years ago |Woah, seriously, the new NEX-C3 doesn’t have a tilt screen?!
Will
2 years ago |The pics show the NEX-C23 does have a tilt screen. True it does not swivel but it never has:

2 years ago |Hopefully they fixed the overheating issues when shooting video on the last Alpha SLT series of cameras. Would be nice if they extended the max time of video recording of at least 30 minutes like the NEX series cameras (from what I heard).

2 years ago |Why on earth would anybody buy an a35 over an a55? Did they fix the video overheating?
Marvin8
2 years ago |The reason to buy an A35 over A55 just disappeared when they removed the swivel LCD. Good business move by Sony.

2 years ago |My guess is that the A55 replacement (let’s call it the A5X for now) will be a big enough jump “up” to differentiate between the A35 and the A5X. But I agree with you guys, the A55 seems to be a better buy. The swivel screen is much more useful than a fixed one for the typical user of these cameras. Just a caveat, if the A55 is more prone to overheating and/or if they’ve fixed this problem in the A35, then the A35 might be a bit more compelling. I’m waiting for the A5X. I’m ready to buy now and would have bought the A35 if it had the swivel screen.

2 years ago |Oops, forgot to mention that it seems like all of the “big” camera manufacturers are going to a fixed screen for their “entry-level” cameras (Nikon D3100, Canon 1100D, etc). This obviously saves them money and makes the next model up seem desirable. My guess is that in a few years, all of the entry level models will have swivel screen as well because consumers will see the value in the form factor.
Marvin8
2 years ago |Remember, the manufacturers would NEVER EVER collude to keep swivel screens off their entry level cameras.

2 years ago |Hmm =/ Probably going NEX-5, then. I’ll still wait for June for all details

2 years ago |Honestly, if a35 will not have manual video control and there will be a FW for the a55, a33 it will be a big disappointment for many users. A77 should have manual video control as well, because any current and future Canon DSLR will have.
Next Canon 5D and 7D replacement will be out some day soon and will probably match most of the FS100 camcorder features for a fraction of the price.
Most pro photographers need of shooting video on order to stay in the market, and buying a Sony FS100 camcorder at 5000$ that still need all the rigs to be usable, is not an option when you can do exactly the same videos with the camera you are taking the stills.
