(SR5) NEX-7 and A77 will be available in Japan on September 16 (announcement on August 24 confirmed).
Our Japanese friends over at Digitcaminfo (Click here) said the Nex-7 and A77 will start to ship in Japan on September 16. It will ship in the rest of the world by early October (A77) and late October (NEX-7).
In the meanwhile our sources confirmed the announcement will take place on August 24 in Tokyo (Should be at around 6-7am London time). As you know you can follow the announcement on this website as we will cover you live with all first news, reviews, image samples and so on. On the same day also Nikon will announce their new stuff. My guess is the new FF cameras will be based on the “old” Sony 24 Megapixels sensor as I have heard the new Sony sensor (and camera) will be ready in early 2012 only. And Nikon will also announce a mirrorless system.
So don’t miss to be here on SAR on August 24 (6-7 am London time). Keep following us on Facebook, Twitter and follow our RSS-feed! And be sure to be here at SAR on August 24th!

All the work you see here is made by me during my free time. If you want to help me to cover the monthly server costs there is an easy way: Click on affiliate links you see on that website like Amazon, Adorama, B&H, J&R, eBay to buy whatever product you want (it doesn’t have to be a camera) and I will earn a small commission from it. You don’t pay any penny more on the items you buy and at the same time you support SonyAlphaRumors without me having to put 100 banners on my website. Cool or not? Thanks

10 months ago |People will properly ignore it and wait for Nikon mirrorless system
Little too late sony? they toke forever to release NEX7 and still no small lenes or decent pancakes like samsung or M43
Nikon can easily get people to wait for their system if they would announce 2-3 fast pancakes at various focal length (I’d take 24mm F2.0- 30mm F2.0/ 50mm F1.8)
Sony had a nice run if nikon system had good lens roadmap because NEX lenses roadmap is utter failure (What’s the point of small camera when all lenses are big?)

10 months ago |the thing is, the nikon mirrorless system is rumorede to have a Crop-factor somewhere around 4-5
dac38
10 months ago |Yes, at that point, a Nokia N9 would serve me better that a 5x crop nikon. Nikon is absolutely horrible at making Consumer P&S cameras. I dont expect this one to fare any better than a Sony HX9V or a Canon S95.
matgay
10 months ago |the nikon mirrorless sensor being so cute and tiiiiny, it will only be considered a “professional” camera when compared for and against point and shoot pocket camera users.
nopt
10 months ago |The Nikon mirrorless is said to have a ~2.6x crop factor. If true it should be an interesting system with a small-ish sensor that allows for some very compact lenses, but not quite so compromised in image quality as the Pentax Q. I don’t know if it’ll necessarily be in direct competition with NEX though. Would you really want to go from a 1.5 to a ~2.6 crop sensor if image quality is the most important thing to you? Or conversely would you be able to deal with the size of NEX lenses if portability is your biggest concern?
Nico
10 months ago |Great, I’m waiting for the Nex-7 !!!
But, you can’t say that Nikon mirrorless won’t have good image quality simply because of the small sensor, a lot of “compact camera” today are really good.
Also Nikon knows how to make really good lenses (even easier with compact lenses)…
The biggest problem with this Tiny sensor is that you don’t have control on DOF.
nopt
10 months ago |I’m sure the image quality will be adequate/good and better than say, Pentax Q (which looks pretty bad from the samples I’ve seen). But it’ll still likely be a very noticeable downgrade from the latest Sony APS-C sensor, that’s all I’m saying.
David
10 months ago |I actually think you’re right.
When I’ve seen NEX7 and the new Zeiss posted on other websites, people laugh at the size of it.
People love the x100 because its so compact. NEX desperately needs pancake lenses to compete. It’s a great system in principle, but in practice if you can’t pocket it, you might as well use a DSLR.
The Nikon system will vastly outsell NEX, even with a smaller sensor. Because it will be small, and because Nikon is already well known and has tons of existing users.
Sad to say but I think Sony have really crippled their own NEX system.
Raul S.
10 months ago |The pancake “issue” has been discussed as hell on several forums…Do you at least understand the differences between m4/3 and E-mount system right? Not only sensor size but also registration distance..m4/3 can manage to create EASILY smaller lenses because of the smaller sensor…It’s like when manufacturers create a 36x zoom lens on a small package…it’s obvious why they can create such a wide telephoto lens that small..(hint: sensor size)
Now, let’s compare Samsung NX and Sony NEX systems…why Samsung is releasing several pancakes and Sony stayed with only 1 if both are APS-C based systems? HINT: registration distance…There’s 7.5mm of difference between NX and NEX..that’s why samsung can create “pancake” lenses easily.
Now my question after you read this is…Would you still prefer a pancake lens with a 30mm or 40mm focal lenght, but aperture around f/3.5 or f/4? or get a relatively smaller lens compared to dSLR counterparts with a relatively faster speed? Or even…would you still like a larger than “pancake” lens with the focal lenght and aperture that several people here comparing m4/3 and NX to Sony NEX system wants?
No, better think again before saying something about “pancake” lenses without having a good argument…
explorer76
10 months ago |The problem is not whether the lens is “pancake” or not, we simply need compact lenses to go with this compact body. If the issue is the registration distance then the question is that why was Sony so short-sighted that they spent so much effort into making an ultra-compact body and yet didn’t realize that the registration distance will make it so difficult to make comparable small lenses? Wouldn’t it be more prudent from system size point of view to have a slightly larger registration distance to allow having smaller lenses. Sony wanted to make the statement of having the slimmest mirror-less body and they got that. But from a system point of view that was a mistake. Not to mention that the short registration distance makes it so much more difficult to make corner-to-corner sharp wide-angle lenses. I actually like NEX, but this was really a case of marketing winning over technical concerns. They got the initial press and lots of users, but in the long run they have been unable to fulfill the potential of a truly compact system.
Also Pentax does make fairly compact lenses including pancakes for their DSLRs, so I think it should still be possible for Sony to make compact lenses.
Pacman
10 months ago |a lot of options for you dude!
Sahaja
10 months ago |Pentax DSLRs have a HUGE registration distance compared to the NEX.
The registration distance on Pentax DSLRs is actually much bigger than it needs to be as the K-mount was designed for “full frame” 35mm SLRs and all Pentax DSLRs are only APS-C. (leaving out the 645D of course)
explorer76
10 months ago |@Sahaja – Yes you are right, but that takes me back to the question of why-o-why did sony didn’t think beyond the goal of making the “slimmest mirrorless body” and did’t realize that its the system that counts not just the body
@Pacman – Sure one has to pick whichever system fits one’s need best. I use Sony DSLRs but at this time NEX does not meet my needs so I have to look elsewhere. However I like NEX body and keep hoping that someday Sony will realize the the illogical-ness of mating ultra-small body with large lenses.
G700
10 months ago |16mm f2.8 is a living proof that pancakes are possible with NEX
Same with sigma upcoming 30mm F2.8 which is almost a pancake size wise
With Sony the smallest lens is the the standard zoom which is funny if you think about it
Zeiss 24mm = as big as zoom lens and expensive as hell
16mm = too wide for standard use
35mm F3.5 bad focal length/slow and still big lens (near 18-55 size)
The rest are all zooms and not even released yet
Garbage lens roadmap if you want small system, might as well stay with DSLR
David
10 months ago |Raul, thanks gor that redunant explanation of the micro 4/3 system (which I never mentioned). As for pancakes; the Fuji x100 managed it with an APS-C sensor.. Sony should at least release the same lens to compete. Then you basically have the Fuji x100 equivalent but with the ability to swap lenses. If that isn’t possible on the Sony mount, then the Sony mount is badly designed.
That Zeiss 24 1.8 is ridiculous. It’s massive and expensive. And since you can’t pocket it, why not just take a DSLR? Any advantage if a compact body went out the window and instead you have a body with worse ergonomics…
I think the NEX system has such good potential. Amazing image quality in a small package. But the key word is SMALL, and until they make good compact lenses, the whole system is worthless.
Dulaney Ward
10 months ago |I would take that Zeiss 24 in a heartbeat over any “pancake” lens in existence. To each his own.
In any case, we’ll see some small lenses for the ssystem in the future.

10 months ago |Nikon will most likely come with a much smaller sensor (about a quarter of the size of APS) and probably only 10-12 MP to keep noise issues down. In what way will such a camera compete with NEX-7?
David
10 months ago |Double post
David
10 months ago |1) The fact it is Nikon – they have a lot of customers already
2) It will be compact.. ie the whole point of these cameras
3) Image quality will still be good. Even though its a smaller sensor, the IQ will be an acceptable compromise for a much smaller device to carry around.
4) Many people simply won’t know/care about sensor size anyway. The soccer moms, rich students etc who buy those cameras.. they don’t know or understand sensor size. They just look at the NEX and Zeiss and think its too big. Whereas a Fuji x100 is small and has good IQ for its size.
And I’ll say it again. The NEX system has great potential, but why have a small compact body if the lenses are massive? And why have a big sensor if the only small lens is a poor quality wide angle 16mm 2.8. If you want good image quality and don’t care about the size, why wouldn’t you just get a dSLR?
Dulaney Ward
10 months ago |Sony makes & sells far more P&S cameras than Nikon. Advantage Sony.
Compactness is ONE reason for “these” cameras, but not THE reason. Mirrorlessness & flexibility are other reasons. Sony has advantage in two of thse areas, Nikon in two. But flexibility, in which NEX is greatly superior to the proposed Nikon system, is likely in the long run to be THE reason for these cameras, and is where the NEX system has it all over the others. But for now, even.
The image quality of the NEX system will undoubtedly be greatly superior to the Nikon. Strong advantage Sony.
As to the cluelessness of the general public, you greatly exaggerate. Sony wins this argument hands down.
Of course the Nikon may well do fairly well, since it will really not be in competition with the larger-sensor cameras from Sony, Samsung, Olympus, and Panasonic. And they’ll wipe the Q. But just where will their sales come from? Nikon P&S users? Maybe a few Nikon dslr users looking for a second camera?
Zstan
10 months ago |People? What people? As far as I am concerned people who are really interested with the Mirrorless cameras have already gotten a NEX or m43 or even the x100.
Sony also has to take care of the Alpha line of products which inenvitably drags the production speed of new NEX lenses or products unlike Samsung or Panasonic or Olympus for that matter.
David
10 months ago |Sad to say, but the reason the x100 sold so well is because it looks good and because it has an APS-C sensor and great image quality. They’re sold out all over the place, and guys like Zack Arias absolutely raving about it. And that is despite all the problems.. terrible close focus, terrible manual focusing, glitchy firmware etc. Plus it is far less flexible than a NEX camera since it is fixed lens.
Trust me, I want Sony to do well. I love my a580 and a850. But the NEX system is such a let-down imo. The main use for me would be as a compact that fits in a pocket and has great IQ. Yet seemingly the NEX can’t do both of those thingd at once.
The NEX7 looks awesome in terms of appearance and specs. Give it ONE really good fixed length lens which is SMALL, and it could be a massive hit.

10 months ago |To my knowledge Nikon engineers (with Sony some help) really designed 12Mpix sensor, but production actually could be in Sony corp. Semiconductor factories. You believe or not, but even 4 years old sensor in D700 body for similar price is dream of many Nikonians. Actually, as I mentioned before, there is no any better FF sensors in the market. Nikon traditions is initially to put new sensor in top end camera and therefore for Nikonians isn’t big chance to get D800 with new Sony 30+Mpix sensor anyway.

Likewise the Pentax Auto 110 mirrorless variant coming out will also have a teensie sensor and take ‘C’ mount lenses. Sony NEX fans have nothing to worry about from these coming tiny proprietary camera systems.

Sony owners went through years of disgrace for associating themselves with a TV-making camera brand by the so-called Canikon “pros”. So, now that Sony got back into the competition with a winning mode, you will see flares of fanaticism sparkling in all camps. I enjoy reading them anyway.

10 months ago |Pedro – that’s true in many matters, hell, I live in Central Europe (which lags badly behind western), and we already have 4G cellphones for some time now, and in next year major cities will get free wireless internet, while in US you often end up with no cellphone range, 3G is new there and free wifi doesn’t exist in plans for next 150 years (though likelt internet won’t exist there till that moment due to patent wars)
But… they don’t care and big companies like Sony don’t care also. So we get stuff later and in higher prices
ARiaz
10 months ago |Umm… We’ve had 4G cellphones for some time too – more than 150 million Americans already have access to 4g. Not to mention, our 4g is LTE – about 3 times faster than what’s available in Europe. Companies like Verizon have also pracically blanketed the US with 3g coverage more than 5 years now. You only have poor cellphone range if you pick a small cell phone carrier to save money.
Every major city has wifi access points throughout and the suburban areas offer wifi in most public areas.
We get stuff earlier because our market is more developed and our consumers are richer for the most part and more likely to spend…

10 months ago |There is “no problem” with the Nikon mirrorless sensor being 1/4 the size of the APS-C sensor.
It is simply targeted at a different market segment.
I think it should make a very good compromise between the normal P&S and an APS-C in size, price and available lens zoom ranges.
In fact I think Sony should also make a NEX like camera with a sensor similar in size with commensurately smaller lenses.
There are 7 billion people in the world and I am sure many will like this new Nikon size camera. No it won’t have APS-C IQ but neither do high end P&S cameras and millions of them sell every year.
People have a tendency to only think what they like is any good but many people have their own idea of what they like also.
Last time I heard “variety is the spice of life”.
