(SR5) Short super good news. New lenses coming for Alpha and NEX!

Just came back at home and found some good news in my mailbox (via trusted sources). New Alpha and NEX lenses are coming soon! At least one lens for each system…but there could be more. I am still working to get full details of the lenses. Spread the word guys! Tonight may be a Canon night, but the Sony time is coming soon too

2 years ago |I hope that means the Alpha 50mm SSM Carl Zeiss is coming out soon! I really have my heart set on getting one. I had a Minolta 50mm 1.4 that I had to return to KEH because of softness and have yet to replace it with anything. Neither the Sony or Minolta 50mm f1.4 have that great of autofocus on the A900.
Linh
2 years ago |Wait… so you bought a Minolta 50/1.4 and return it because of the “softness”?

2 years ago |I highly doubt it’s 50. There are several of them already for alpha mount: Sony 50 f1.4 and Sigma 50 f1.4 for full frame + Sony 50 f1.8 DT. Not to mention old Minolta AF variants and several excellent M42 glasses that adapt gorgerously to newer SLT bodies.
What FF shooters *DO* need is an updated version of 35 f2.
godsakes
2 years ago |On the softness part you either had a bad copy or needed to micro adjust to get the best out of it.
I really don’t follow your complaint about the autofocus, the sony 50mm f1.4 I have is the fastest AF lens I’ve used on the system.
Given Sigma already have the impressive 50mm f1.4 HSM I don’t think there’s a huge need to update the 50mm, FF needs a better general walkabout zoom in the 24-135mm range.
Vivek
2 years ago |I hope the next NEX lens is a fast 30mm prime in black.
After covering the E 50/1.8 in mat black vinyl, I discovered that it has a shiny plastic ring in the front that has the inscriptions of the lens!
The E-Sonnar 24/1.8 does not have that mirror.
I hope Sony would pay attention to these details and take the bling out of the important areas in a lens. They can put such things on a lens box or camera box instead if they are so keen on playing with bling things.

Geir E
2 years ago |Sony launch a fast prime – people complain it is too big
Sony launch a small lens – People complain it is too slow
you can’t have it both small and fast.
Vivek
2 years ago |The actual lens portions (glass) in 30/3.5, 24/1.8 and 50/1.8 (all same size BTW) is small. Even if they had made the 30mm lens to be f/1.1, there is no need for an increase in size and that could have the same 49mm filter thread.
There is no indication that the rumored 90/2.8 is a compact lens.
Denis
2 years ago |Long macro cannot be compact. BTW, this (90mm) sounds like FF lens.
Anonymous
2 years ago |@Denis Why would Sony make a FF 90/2.8 when they already have a FF 85/2.8? There are other focal lengths that are more important.
IHUR
2 years ago |while i also like when its fast, but for 90mm lens, 2.8 is quite a standard. Faster than tht you will mostly need a tripod to use while Nex is supposed to be walkaround camera. I remember how hard it is to keep a steady shot shot with my zuioko 90mm/2.0. Beside, faster than 2.8 ,the size will get bulkier
Carl
2 years ago |Looks like I have a doppelganger.
90mm sounds long for an APS macro, not that there’s anything really wrong with that, the extra working distance can be handy. It’s just strange that they’d go with 30mm and 90mm, and not something between the two.

2 years ago |I had to make the same decision 18 months ago and chose the STF. Not easy to handle and needs expertise on the 850/900 when it comes to focusing, even with the M-focusing screen. It is real fun on the A77 with focus peaking. You will like it.

2 years ago |When I got my first Sony SLR, one of my considerations, having come from a few years of shooting video was the tilting LCD. A few years later now, both Canon and Nikon have these only on the lower end models, as if this is something to be ashamed of, not worthy of a “pro”. I find that Sony really respects my wishes to be a more creative photographers, even in stressful environments. Then again, the wait for the A99 is really killing me right now.
passer-by
2 years ago |This is exactly the same with my thought. I don’t understand why Canikon think that swivel LCD is “less” pro, unless they want to sell external display.
RVN
2 years ago |that’s right man, i love tilting lcd camera because that give us more creativity to find any angle direction
David
2 years ago |The next NEX lens should be a 35 prime. Maybe f2. But I’m sceptical. They won’t want to offer something too similar to the 24/1.8.
I think it will be another zoom lens with variable aperture. And people will complain that it’s soft and slow. Of course if they released a constant aperture lens, everyone will say that it’s massive.
The alpha lens really should be a 50. The a850 and 900 have a ton of resolution but the current 50 is pretty poor. 50 is a very popular focal length – small, light and good on FF and APS-C. They really should have a good 50 with SSM focusing.
Bugger
2 years ago |Then again, they probably would, a non-zeiss one that’s aimed not the the ‘pros’.
Carl
2 years ago |If they make it a 35/1.8, that would give them a set of three fast primes. All are a bit longer and slower than ideal, but given the price point and target market that can be forgiven.

Maybe some TS-E for those “wierd” guys shooting landscapes/buildings.
Tho as was said, 70-200mm f4 wouldnt be bad (or f3.5 if they want slight advantage over competition). Truth to be told, 70-200mm f2.8 could use some upgrade (cause A77).
Otherwise no idea.. some Zeiss lens are always nice, but bit pricey..

2 years ago |The only prime that I own and do not use ever is the 16/2.8 (dog). I can put up with the bulky lenses (the other 3) when they can actually do what a lens is supposed to do.
Besides, body caps from China cost very little nowadays.
Useful lenses instead of crappy “pancakes”, please.
ItsaChris
2 years ago |I still am asking for pancake lens, but just as with the EVF/OVF the sides are to entrenched to realize that both can be a useful choice in the lineup and both have pros and cons (or people just type loudly a lot and in only absolutes).
A sightly longer version of Samsung 30mm lens (bc of the difference in flange) would be great or a collapsible shot telephoto (like the Leica 90mm f/4 macro)
The sigma 30mm looks very nice, given its mtf.

2 years ago |According to the most recent lens roadmap that was discussed on this blog, the three outstanding lenses for 2012 are:
1. “High-magnification Zoom” (70-300? 18-105?)
2. “Standard Zoom” (16-50? Collapsible 20-50?)
3. “Large Aperture Standard” (35/f2?)
Whatever Admin received in the mail today should therefore be already known, or it should be specific enough to post it as a rumor already. Make it “SR2″ or “SR3″, why else do we have that rumor classification scale? This site has become a peddler of near-certain-but-unconfirmed product announcements. It is very disappointing.

2 years ago |E-mount 90/2.8 with stabilization. If it’s dead sharp fully open 2.8 will do fine and keep it small. The now discontinued Leica 90/2.8 Elmarit-M is the benchmark (performance not price), small and sharp. Combined with the Nex-7 it’ll make the world my studio.

2 years ago |We recently got a NEX lens roadmap, right?
So we already know what’s coming for the NEX so there shouldn’t be any surprises.
Alpha on the other hand hasn’t had a published roadmap for some time and with an exception for the recent 500mm no rumors about new alpha lenses have been talked about, correct?
A roadmap for alpha glass would be helpful to keep people from jumping ship with all of the Nikon and Cannon announcements alpha shooters need some good news.

Wide angle zoom
It looks like the wide aperture standard will follow shortly.

2 years ago |My wish list:
FF could really do with a modern equivalent of the cz16-80mm on ASP-C say a 24-135mm which will have better image quality, faster AF and shorter MFD compared to the secret handshake.
APS-C a 50-200mm f2.8 zoom lens
NEX a 35mm f1.8 or f2 pancake lens, something similar to the samsung 30mm f2

2 years ago |My wish list:
Sony 50mm f/1.4 with SSM (either it’s Zeiss or G)
Sony 85mm f/1.4 CZ upgraded with SSM for video.
Sony DT 11-18mm upgraded with SSM and faster probably f/3.5?
Sony 70-200 f/2.8 upgraded with weather-sealed to match A77.

2 years ago |I’m not a NEX user, but a friend just bought one and I like the system, A 2.8 walk around 16-55 would certainly make the system more attractive to me, then later on, a 55-200ish 2.8. I don’t mind if its big, it will certainly be significantly smaller than the A mount versions I use now (with my A700)
I am sure I’m not alone with this thought.

2 years ago |Very high chance a a-mount 50 1.4/1.2 Za SSM
For E mount, would that be zoom lens or the large aperture prime promised? If Sony will have middle telephoto prime in 2013, I guess a more sensible guess should be 35 1.8
chris
2 years ago |The Nex macro and 50mm – announced months ago – are still nowhere to be found and not particularly great performers from the samples posted around the web, what difference does it make what Sony announces – it won’t be in stock till when … Summer? Fall? 2013?
I’m trying to stick with Nex, but the lens roadmap and the reality of when Sony actually get the lenses into people’s hands is disappointing. I’m getting the Metabones EOS adapter (if any ever become available again) and slapping my Canon “L” lenses on my Nex until Sony drops some fast/sharp pancakes – like the Pentax DA lenses. My 24/1.4 will mop the floor with the 24/1.8.

2 years ago |I switch between m43 and nex. The NEX7 is my ideal camera, practically perfect in my opinion, but there aren’t any lenses for the system so I’ve sold it for now and am using my G3, 7-14, 25f1.4, and 45 f1.8. It’s a great system, but the NEX7 does have much better IQ when used with great lenses. If they would come out with an equivalent to Panasonic’s 7-14 I would be perfectly fine using adapted lenses for everything else.

2 years ago |My wishlist:
DT 16 f2.8
DT 24 f2
Zooms we have enough already. But there isn’t a *single* APS-C windeangle-prime out there. There are some FF lenses that can be used as wides on crop bodies, but most of them are 1) pretty bad quality and/or 2) expensive. If Sony actually designs around the lens being for a crop body, I’m pretty sure they can make way better and cheaper offerings.
futile32
2 years ago |I own a few G and Zeiss FF lenses, but I’ve been really impressed with the cheaper 35mm and 50MM DTs. I wouldn’t mind seeing a nice 24mm F1.8 DT. That would round the range off nicely.
on the FF side of things, a 50mm replacement would be good. the 50mm F1.4 and F1.7 are both pretty soft, and have real issues with Lat CA.

2 years ago |As a A77 shooter, what I’d love to see is couple of quality DT zooms:
1. UWA (10-16mm, 11-18mm or something like that) with constant aperture (2.8 or 3.5)
2. Compact tele (50-150mm or similar) with constant 2.8 aperture
This would be a great zoom set with the 16-50/2.8.
The other thing would be updated macro lenses. Inner focusing like Sigma has and SSM. I don’t think there’s too much wrong with the current ones, image quality wise. Another awesome option would be 100mm f2 Zeiss Makro-Planar with 1:2 magnification, that would serve nicely as a portrait lens as well.
Christian Bernfeld
2 years ago |My wishlist:
1. There is definitly the need of a wide to slight tele zoom, 24-120 mm preferred. The Minolta 28-135 is a really sharp lens, but suffers from severe chromatic failures (purple fringing…) What else at this moment?
2. I would need an excellent FF superwide. No need of a zoom and ultrafast. In this region several lenses are missing in Sonys lineup. The 16-35 Zeiss in my opinion isn’t worth that much money, the 2/24 is an excellent lens, but not wide enough, the manual focusing Distagon 21 unfortunately isn’t available with A mount. What else below 24 mm?
So why not a 3.5/14 mm or similar?
3. The 2/100 Makro-Planar would be absolutely my favorite macro lens!! (Who cares about AF with it?) Does anybody know, why all the manual focusing Zeiss lenses aren’t available for A mount?
4. Weatherproof lenses….
But what will we get from Sony? I think it will be this one: http://www.sonyalpharumors.com/sr5-new-a-mount-zeiss-50mm-f1-4-ssm-coming-with-the-a9x/
So let’s hope for the future – once more…

spada
2 years ago |The Minolta 28-135 does not suffer from “severe chromatic failures” Honestly, on a full frame camera, it is not noticeable at all. If anything, I was surprised by the lack of CA that lens has for the large zoom range, and fairly constant aperture. It’s ONLY downside is the minimum focus distance. Even having the “macro” at the wide end is genius, and has produced some of my best shots.
cbsva
2 years ago |Thank you for that good news, Spada. I could use that lens only with a A700, but I am planning the A99. So maybe on FF the problem is gone?
Unfortunately I cannot send you an example image here, but with my A700 twigs and leaves before bright sky for instance produce severe amounts of purple fringing. Did you view your images in 100% view?
Minimum focusing distance really is a downside, I would wish at least 1 m, and you are right, 28mm macro can produce some astonishing effects, if one can handle it well. BTW.: For tele macro I use my 2,8/200 APO Minolta with distance rings – astonishing results too…;-)

2 years ago |Like the Nex-7, but the selection of lenses is poor in many ways:
- few
- strange focal lenghths: 75mm equiv short tele?? 45 mm equiv macro
- mediocre IQ compared to m43 – only one lens with great IQ (and high cost)
- weight is OK, but size! (are they Alpha lenses with built-in adapter rather than new design, optimized for NEX?)
Hope the one (!!!) new LENS is more relevant and has better IQ. And not another shit kit lens.
