Sony a1 Review by an Actual Professional Still Photographer, by Patrick Murphy-Racey

Patrick writes:

I’ve spend the last two months shooting with the new SONY a1 camera body, so I’ve had a chance to put it through its paces by shooting multiple sports in all kinds of light, portrait assignments, a food job, basketball on strobes to test out the new 1/400th strobe sync, and video as well. This review is still photo specific as I hope to have another video in the future that talks only about how capable the Alpha 1 is for that medium as well. Put short, it’s an awesome box that is beyond capable for virtually any assignment you might have. this review is more than just a regurgitation about the specifications of the Sony a1 and delves more into real world usage with the camera in a variety of situations. A the time of publishing this, Sony has become aware of an issue with the eye sensor below the eyepiece when direct sunlight hits the back of the camera and causes it to malfunction. Sony is looking at this closely and is compiling data from Sony Pro Service Members about this issue and will be working on a solution. That is literally the only pain point about a1 that I am aware of. stay tuned to my channel for more information on this. Last, if you have received your a1 in the last month, please be aware there is already a firmware update available for it so be sure to download it and take care of that to get your best results. Sincerely yours, pm-r :)

Sony A1 review at Dpreview “an incredibly effective photographic tool”

Dpreview published the full Sony A1 review.

The Sony a1 is the most refined Alpha-series interchangeable lens camera yet. Its combination of speed and resolution for both stills and video set it apart in a crowded field of excellent options, though that combination is also responsible for the price it commands. But the fact remains, most any professional photographer will be able to use the a1 for most anything they’d think to shoot.

Sony A1 vs Canon EOS-R3 size comparison

If I got this right: The new Canon EOS-R3 will have the same power as the Sony A1 (stacked sensor, 30fps), but likely less resolution (it’s a rumor os it may be wrong) and all that in a much bigger body? Yes I know Canon fanboys will hate me for saying that. But before you do the Canon definitely has superior IS and honestly, I like the R3 design a lot.
