Wild rumors roundup: ILME-FX9II, A7 IVA, A9III

About those rumors: I have no idea who sent them and 90% of the times they turn out to be wrong. But, it happened in the past that a couple of those were right. So I will post them today, and we all together can eventually keep track of this. If one of the sources turns out to be right than we will know we can trust it a bit more!

The newly developed 4K camera ILME-FX9 with dynamic resolution cmos sensor, has a similar reading nature to the Clear Vid sensor, but it has square original pixels. It supports full-frame 4K/60p with super-sampling and 4K/120p with 1.1x crop. And it has two base ISO at 800 and 6400.

After the new A9 series camera, Sony will introduce the A7 IVA, similar to the RX100M5 upgrade to the RX100M5A, rather than the A7R III simple upgrade to the A7R IIIA.
It will get all the new features of the A7RV: 4-axis multi-angle LCD, 8-stop image stabilization, new AI processor, new menus, full-time DMF, all-new AI-based autofocus system with advanced subject recognition, 4K 100/120fps video capability with pixel-by-pixel cropping and pixel-shift multi-shot.
The reason why it is not called A7 V is because the upgrade is not enough.

A9 iii will feature a stacked bsi cmos sensor of 33 mpx

Curious (unverified) rumors about the future Canon R5II having in some aspects same A7rV specs!

  • New design of vari-angle LCD monitor optimized for video shooting

Other specs (different from the A7rV)

  • New overheat prevention design similar to EOS R6 Mark II, at least 40min for 8K video, and over
  • 60 min for 4K video
  • Dual CFexpress type B card slot
  • 2x/4x/8x digital tele-convertor

FUTURE Sony cameras: The A6xxx, A9III, A7sIII and many more need a replacement in 2023!

We ain’t getting any new camera in November-December. But in 2023 a lot of Sony Alpha cameras are due for a replacement:

  • Sony A6600 (August 28, 2019) 3 years and 4 months old
  • Sony A6100 (August 28, 2019) 3 years and 4 months old
  • Sony A9II (October 3, 2019) 3 years and 2 months old
  • Sony A7sIII (July 28, 2020) 2 years and 4 months old
  • Sony A7c (September 15, 2020)  2 years and 2 months old
  • Sony A1 (January 26, 2021) 1 year and 11 months old

Consider that on average Sony announces a camera replacement after 3 years and you will quickly notice a surprisingly large number of cameras will be 3+ year old in 2023!

  • A6xxx:
The A6xxx line has to be updated in 2023 if Sony still wants to be considered as a serious APS-C contender. And recently Sony stated clearly that they have to release new APS-C bodies: “Unfortunately, I can’t mention future products in detail, but yes, we understand the market demand for APS-C models as well, and we’ve never stopped development of them.”
  • A9III:
I also do believe the A9III is coming in 2023. I have no solid specs yet but I discussed some wild rumors on my latest youtube video.
  • A7sIV:
I got no info about a possible A7sIV in 2023. But maybe towards the end of the year we will get an 8K A7sIV too?
  • A7cII:
I see this likely to be announced in 2023. Basically again a copy paste model of the current A7IV.
  • Sony A1II:
I think it’s more likely we will get this camera in 2024.

In this list I didn’t mention possible ZV or RX fixed lens cameras…but this is worth to be talked about in a future new post :)

The new Sony A9III will be tested at the FIFA World Cup?

A month ago I got hints that the A9III might be coming in early 2023. it’s only a hint, nothing solid yet. But small bread crumps of rumors keep coming in like this one I got this week:

A9 III will be lent to select photographers during the FIFA world cup and possibly during the Asian winter games.

I repeat, I am still not certain the A9III is coming in early 2023, but from a timing point of view it would certainly make sense for Sony to replace the now over 3 years old Sony A9II. Here some rumored WILD specs:
