Til yesterday BHphoto (Click here) said the A7 and A7r would ship late November. They now changed the delivery estimation to “beginning of December”. Amazon (Click here) says December 1. The great 55mm f/1.8 Zeiss will ship right before Christmas (Dec 22 according to Amazon). I hope you will be able to get your camera and lens preorders before Christmas!

The cameras will ship earlier in Europe (mid November says Sony Germany) and Asia (2-3 weeks says Digitalrev). Click on the links below to check the shipment estimation for single countries and stores:

Debunking rumors: Fuji will NOT use the Sony A7 sensors (nor will Nikon).

DSRLmagazine posted a tweet where they claim that Fuji’s new fixed lens Full Frame camera will use the A7 sensor. it’s my duty to let you know that Fuji will most definitely NOT use a Sony sensor for their upcoming FF camera. And as far as I know not even Nikon will use the A7-A7r sensors.

What’s true is that Fuji will launch an RX1-RX1R competitor in Spring. That I can confirm via my sources. They also know some stuff about the competition ;) But I expect Sony to launch an RX2 in Spring 2014 too so this will be a nice battle between the two!

The real surprise is that Nikon and Canon still have no serious plan to challenge Sony’s A7 and RX cameras.

With all these A7-A7r excitement the RX10 release got a bit overshadowed. But this is really a suprising camera with an unique video feature that we miss on the A7-A7r cameras (question to Sony…why?):

First look at Photoreview Australia:

“The main advantage of the RX10 as a movie camera is its ability to read out image data from the entire sensor array and sub-sample it in the processor. This is a ‘first’ for this type of camera and minimises the risk of moiré and false colour effects, ensuring optimal image quality on a frame-by-frame basis. The BIONZ X processor has been designed to handle a 5K video stream and has a special large-scale integration chip to convert this data into 1920 x 1080 pixel movie clips. According to several specialist video commentators, this ‘full pixel readout’ has been restricted mainly to smaller sensors, although the Nikon 1 sensor (which is the same size as the RX10’s) can deliver 4K output at up to 60 fps (NTSC format).”

Sony A7r ISO test comparison by Focus Numerique. Says the results are impressive!

Focus Numerique (google translation here) posted the full Sony A7r ISO test. I translated their key findings:

– At lower sensitivities up to ISO 800 the performance is just remarkable! Details are clear and noise barely noticeable.
– Only from ISO 1600 you see first effects of smoothing but the details are still there and dynamic range is intact.
– At ISO 3200, the smoothing is a bit stronger, but once again the treatment due to the image analysis (solid, edge, texture) works really well. The dynamic range drops slightly, but nothing dramatic.
– The overall image is a little more dense, fine details are blunt and the rolling becomes more easily visible at 100% on screen. Chromatic noise is still well under control and images are still easily exploitable.
– At ISO 25600, the grain still looks natural, destroying a little more fine detail, but the results are still impressive, especially with a resolution of 36 megapixels.

This is a very impressive result from the Sony A7r! It looks like Sony was able to improve considerably their image processor engine. We were used to see Sony lagging behind Canon-Nikon. This now changed with he A7-A7r.

(SR4) FF and APS-C A-mount SLT coming.

I am working on the new 2014 camera and lens rumors. And as I told you last week it’s going to be an extremely exciting year with plenty of new cameras, many times more in number than we had in 2013! With all the E-mount news I posted in these days and weeks I feel obligated to post A-mount rumors as first :)

According to two anonymous sources Sony has two working A-mount prototypes cameras:
1) One Full Frame SLT A-mount cameras. It features a new 36 Megapixel sensor which is slightly different from the A7r sensor (it has no offset microlens design).
2) One APS-C SLT A-mount camera with new 24 megapixel sensor (improved over the A77 sensor!).

One trusted source also told me that Sony is well aware of the need to continue to make APS-C A-mount cameras. In short, the chances are high to see two new A-mount cameras in early 2014. Both, for FF and APS-C A-mount system. I am working to get the final specs of the cameras.

Stay tuned on SAR, because I am also working on the new APS-C and FF E-mount cameras front. I have to say I am surprised to hear how much Sony is developing rigt now. They are more “convinced” about their roadmap than ever.
