Sony A7V sensor, “tweaked” or completely new?
Leaked image of the Sony A7V prototype
After yesterdays video three new “sources” contacted me. Those are not long time trusted sources so I cannot know if they are telling me the truth. But I had the chance to chat with them a bit longer and they seemed to be genuine in their intention. Still, I have been naive before and/or they may got wrong information form their sources. So take it with a grain of salt!
Source 1:
the camera will feature a brand-new sensor
Source 2:
I can assure you that the sensor definitely captured images that had more than 33 Mpix. I 100% believe that the “L:33M” being displayed on screen is entirely a software issue.
Source 3:
I think with 99% confidence the A7IV is going to be stacked/semi stacked with additional video features
I appreciate the effort and thanks for trying to help, but I still cannot tell my readers anything certain about the sensor :(
Another long time reader (Thanks George) wrote this:
I saw your recent videos and posts on the A7V. I understand that the use of the 33mp sensor from Sony seems like a misstep.
Following the investor presentation documents I sent earlier you can see that this development was the likely outcome. Likely, the sensor is minimally tweaked and optimized for less noise and integration with the AI processor. This is likely why a company like Sony still utilizes investors as part of the sensor creation process. We will know when a new sensor is being implemented in a new mirrorless camera because we will see a spike in capital expenditure. My guess is that the Sony Imaging team already has a sensor design and logic suite for the next gen of cameras but is not yet green lit to build the camera. From the attached slide we can see that Sony is reducing expenses until 2026. New tech is coming from Sony but we will need to be patient. I am certain, 2027 will see some exciting developments from Sony like the TRISTA technology.
