Sony announced the new IMX928 68MP square global shutter sensor, the smaller brother of the IMX927 105MP sensor

Sony announced the new IMX928 sensor. It’s a 68MP square global shutter sensor and the smaller brother of the IMX927 105MP sensor that was announced in autumn.
Even though the IMX928 is nearly as “tall” as a Full Frame sensor (22.5mm vs 24mm), it is much narrower (22.5mm vs 36mm). Overall, a Full Frame sensor is about 70% larger in total surface area. It’s a sensor made for industrial use so it won’t be in any cinema or Alpha camera in this form. But surely some of this tech will find it’s way what could become a new 50MP global shutter sensor for the future Sony A1III. Yes you heard me…I am betting a higher resolution global shutter Full Frame camera is coming sometimes in late 2027 or 2028.
