Gustav posted the first SAL70-400 SSM G II image samples at Dyxum (Click here). He says that “this is a outstanding/superb lens for wildlife/sports , razor-sharp , even with the lens wide open. if you looking for a very good lens that have SSM and personal i think this lens come`s very close near a fixed-lens 300mm/400mm”
Thanks Gustav!

3 months ago |Looks promising, but I’m dubious that mere coatings could make that much improvement in optics, the remainder of which remain unchanged. I’ll wait for more reviews before I upgrade.

3 months ago |why are you guys all complaining, add to the 70-400 great optics better focusing and it becomes an amazing lens, should have been weather sealed, but otherwise great stuff.

Maybe his mouse has some sort of a problem with “left click” combined with some links.

3 months ago |Sony netherlands loan me this lens, unfortunately the lens. Must back to sony.
But. If i get discount or not, i shall buy this lens, because its a superb lens in his class.
Look on the link to DYXUM and on page on end seven you see picture’s, also 100% crops
Its not only the sharpness that this lens is great, but i notice a improfment to the. AF.
I had also the silver one, and that is also a great lens, , with the silver lens. It has sometime’ problems to get in AF. , when you use some of the other AF points. Than the middle one, now i notice a. Improvement there also
I invited some friends to my house, and try it in the garden. Also with. Bad weather. ! They where impressed.
If you have. The silver one its a very good lens, the last years i make vey good picture’s with it, but the white one is a step better
I have also the SAL 300mm 2.8 ssm g, but i think when i have the new 70-400. The 300mm stay’s in the bag

3 months ago |Thanks Gustav for your valuable info!
I had former silver 70-400 G but sold it because of slow AF for bird photos. I bought new 300/2.8 G II and it has very fast AF, being very happy with it! But it is also heavy (not so heavy as your 500/4 G) to carry all the time in nature. Now thinking to buy for my lighter lens that new 70-400 G II because it has faster AF and a bit better photo quality also compared to older one. But also considering 70-200/2.8 G because it has faster aperture… Have you any hint when Sony is making new 70-200 G II ???

3 months ago |The sharpness at 100% crop is amazing! Looks like a sweet combo for A77′s successor.
gustav
3 months ago |Yes i try this lens on the A77…and i think. It shall works maybe better on the new A58
Frank
3 months ago |If Gustav says it’s fast and sharp then I believe it more than any marketing Sony put out.
gustav
3 months ago |Thank you frank
The lens is improved, in the netherlands it’s in the shop in april, people can see it than for them self.
It’ not only the white paint

3 months ago |No weather sealing? The typical “snatching defeat from the jaws of victory” move from Sony.
ArtoS
3 months ago |I have used both silver 70-400 G I and 70-200/2.8 G in very demanding conditions and there were no troubles with weather sealing with both of them!

3 months ago |Having shot several thousands of bird photos with the original version of the 70-400mm I can tell you that it is sharp at all apertures and it is one of the most under rated lenses out there. When I speak of sharpness I am comparing to the Zeiss lineup (I have them all except 500mm) and the 300mm f/2.8 APO. The FL range is very versatile and the SSM is smooth and quick. So if this revised one is better in some way then we have another winner.
GreenLens
3 months ago |If the lens Gustav has was cherry-picked for him by Sony Netherlands, one can safely assume about 20% lower resolution for a lens purchased online.
Frank
3 months ago |The old 70-400mm is already sharp at 400mm f5.6.
Zohee35
3 months ago |With the number of lenses available(only demo models…), I doubt there’s much to cherry pick.

3 months ago |So can anybody clarify whether the optics are any different? I *love* my 70-400 and while improve AF would be nice, improved optics (less ringing bokeh) would be better.
Randy S. – yeah, unsharp mask…like what these guys used to cheat their analysis: http://www.photozone.de/sony-alpha-aps-c-lens-tests/432-sony_70400_456

3 months ago |Hi Chris you can check on the Sonystyle and look up there both lens design. The IQ Sony 70-400mmG1 is better than Nikon and Canon at 400mm. I am sure this G2 is very good too specially they use aspherical lens.
