Full A99 review at Mobile01!

The first long and detailed Sony A99 test comes via Mobile01 (Translation here). You can watch and download plenty of images in JPG, RAW and different ISO’s. I will leave any comment about the image quality to you. I think there will be no difference between this camera and other FF camera in the same league. The features will make the difference (in better or in worse).

8 months ago |This is a really good look at the A99 and some of the features that aren’t explained in-depth on the spec sheet – this is one powerhouse camera and I’m very excited to get mine in hand. Lots of good samples and all ISO’s … the A99 is very clean up to 3200 and LR4 makes 6400 look much better than my EM5 and Nex5n. The multi-exposure NR is probably the only way I’d go above 6400 and those usually get converted to B&W because of the noise. All-in-all very impressive.
As a hybrid shooter this is a great camera with just about everything that’s missing from my last FF camera – the 5d2 – and competitors like the 5d3/800. Don’t care about the D600/6D so many keep whining about, because they lack too many features for me to even consider. I’m not selling my video camera just yet, but I’m hoping the clean HDMI will let me finally merge my photo and video business into one camera.
SHIP IT SONY!

8 months ago |The images did not disappoint. I cannot wait to get my hands on this camera and start using it. I preordered the protective lcd screen cover from Sony and it just shipped. Maybe the camera is next.

8 months ago |great review. dpreview needs to take a long look at this review and (re)learn, learn things like posted photos should be in focus. dpreview has gotten really lazy and sloppy over the last couple of years.

8 months ago |Theres one very important feature..
1st FF dSLT/dSLR with EVF and focus peaking and thats one of best features.
(yea sure Leica “M” has that too, but price is.. well somewhere else)

8 months ago |Looking good. To me, the biggest problem of the A99 is that it’s not available yet. I still love my A900, I think it’s biggest problem is that focussing sometimes struggles in low light. Though, when it does work, it’s very accurate. Face detection would be neat as well.

8 months ago |Everything I’ve seen or read indicates very good results from higher ISO which was not possible from other alpha models. I think it’s a step in the right direction because previous alphas lacked the necessary quality at hgh ISO levels.
I will say this I’ve used an alpha for years and I prefer the color and sharpness of the picture over the Canon that my buddy uses. We used to shoot weddings together and I could not go over ISO 400, but to be honest I rarely ever went over 200 and my shots always came out with better quality than his Canon 40d shooting at ISO 800 or higher during the ceremony.
Big win for me and other photos that need to shoot in lower light!!!!

8 months ago |I’m really impressed… by the reviewers! These are by far the best photographs I’ve seen in a review; subjects after subjects that totally challenge the sensor and the lenses, and beautifully shot to boot!
Going back to the a99, I’m also very impressed by the high ISO results. If I didn’t know what to look for, I’d be wondering why I’m looking at the same photo over and over. I’m used to using T-Max P3200 for high-ISO needs, and used to seeing grain even on a 4×6 print, so the ISO 6400 is, like, wow!
The underexposed RAW shots also show off the seriously high dynamic range. Nice.
And, again, nicely done!

8 months ago |wow. This must be a historic day! Seems like everyone is finally happy even on this thread! Wait, now they come the 50+mpix needers.. Just some minutes..
John Thomas
8 months ago |naaahhh…. the trolls just haven’t seen the thread yet. Someone will start griping that if it didn’t have the SLT mirror that it would be able to see Pluto on a dark night and 1/8000th shutter at f22.
Another will gripe that if it had a OVF that all the pictures would be better and somehow unicorns would be real.
Others will say the good review is actually a sony conspiracy to buy up all the review sites so they can trick the whole world into liking their cameras — because surely only Canon or Nikon can get good reviews becuase they implement every single feature everyone has ever asked for and their cameras never have any issues whatsoever!

But it would be cool if its was fully mirrorless AND if Sony announced a few more Zeiss and G lenses that take full advantage of it.

8 months ago |You see, now that Sony released a camera with such great AF and ISO performance (just to name two features), everyone would have been happier to shoot MF only and standing on a tripod at ISO 100. I really have fun reading some comments nowadays.

8 months ago |Those are indeed impressive image samples from people who obviously know what they’re doing. They’ve pretty much sold me on this camera’s capabilities (whether I live up to those capabilities is another story entirely!).
Though I have to say that I just got back from a trip with my a850 and some old Minolta lenses and they certainly did not disappoint. If this new camera can be the same kind of workhorse, I’ll be very impressed.
Daniel
8 months ago |Everything I’ve seen so far points out that this camera delivers the best IQ I’ve seen in a Sony camera…no wonder the D600 scored so high with DXO. One well engineered sensor.
I have to get my hands on the A99 soon….
I have to confess that it seems to be exactly what I was hopping for…clean 1600…good 3200…decent 6400.
I might get away with less time in Lightroom.

8 months ago |I think this was one really objective review, with the features explained as they are, not biased like on Luminous Landscape.
Also, actual photos were posted, so we could all get the idea. I like the quality. It looks like the best IQ I have seen so far from Sony.
One thing is not clear, if the camera can take stills while recording video.
Thank you, and keep up the good work!!!

8 months ago |An excellent review through A99 features. Best things IQ-wise are:
-Very improved JPEG engine over A77. Definitely very useable for jpeg-only features and TeleZoom 8fps-10fps modes.
-Excellent high ISO performance
-Sensational dynamic range

8 months ago |I have to say, the results are really starting to stack in a positive light. That site (slrclub) had a lot of great “real world” images. Sony has really stepped up to the challenge in battling high ISO noise it seems. I almost hate to bring it up , but even the videos seemed brilliant. Didn’t spot any of the aliasing issues that I’ve seen in previous footage. Could simply be the subject matter, but I didn’t see anything along the power lines or architectural patterns. All in all, I’m looking forward to the upgrade from my A900. This camera is proving itself as a true professional photography tool. Canon and Nikon are still great brands, but Sony is about to throw some heat.

8 months ago |Great AF! Also notice that after buffer is full the camera keeps shooting at roughly 4fps indefinitely. It seems A99 will benefit greatly from fast cards!

8 months ago |Does anyone know if the A99 has micro focus adjust on it? From what I can tell the AF-D system means you don’t need it, however that only supports a few lenses, does it adjust for non supported lenses (but doesn’t support the full set of AF-D features), or does it have separate micro focus adjust? Or is it a case of if you have non-supported lenses ‘too bad, so sad’?
Stephen Linhart
8 months ago |It says it uses Contrast Detection as a hybrid with Phase Detection for accuracy. I think this probably means it doesn’t need micro focus adjust.
