3 months ago |I am pissed and I hope someone at sony read this :
The AEL button doesn’t work in manual mode, you can assign everything you want in P, A, S,
In menu, Function. of AEL button can be assign but not for manual mode.
Such a shame as its not about the camera capability…
Please I want to use focus magnifier, exposure comp., flash mode, smile shutter… Or any other option also in manual mode…???
In manual mode the AEL button will only work for one thing. Aperture ????
Please allow the same capability for manual mode as any other mode. Common, it as nothing to do with image setting, RAW, RAW & JPEG….
Please add this to the new firmware. I believe it’s just a command line that as been forgotten by programmer…
Thanks for reading this… I love my A65, I just wanna be able to use Fn button the way they suppose to work
Thank you!!!
Mist
3 months ago |+1, I really hope I can assign other function to AEL in M mode.
I also hope there is an option in Menu for back dial in A mode for aperture while front dial for Exposure Compensation.

3 months ago |This is wonderful they’ve specifically addressed the APO teleconverter compatibility issues. Big discussion of very inconsistent performance over at Dyxum. Works for some, not for others, and no combination is consistent.
Now WHERE IS OUR TETHERING SUPPORT??? Where is remote video shooting support? I was forced to rent a Canon last week because the client demanded tethered viewing of the shoot. So embarrassing and frustrating.
And WHY oh WHY no Smart Teleconverter in RAW mode?
Look, I can get FF or APS-C in RAW mode on a900. This is great for when I don’t want to deal with all the large files for certain shooting. Why not a crop mode for a77 and NEX too, in RAW? Take advantage of that EVF Sony and provide a cropped RAW mode which still allows full EVF screen display.

kk
3 months ago |Nevermind. If you’re creating professional work, you should be using Canon or Hasselblad anyway. I was just suggesting LR for Sony-importing during the shoot. I’m looking forward to trying my Nex-7 with LR. Live-view tethering would be great, but not necessarily needed. What app are you using with your Canon at work?
SonyA77
3 months ago |LR and CS5 and Sony IQ is as good as a Canon in the studio!

3 months ago |It is true that my clients often are surprised that I use Sony. But most of my assignments include both video and stills – and most clients understand that Sony is very much used in professional video environments. So it is not that hard to convince them.
And at the end of the day all that matter for the client is results. If they get the quality they hope for they dont care what brand you are shooting with.
I also know professionals that shoot Olympus and Pentax … they get by too.

5 weeks ago |i think you all are on the hype of canon because its canon iv had a guy come to my job to take a passport picture i use a point and shoot Olympus, he looked at me and said ah Olympus I’m a canon guy (so then why are you here)
fact is APS sensor camera manufacturers (Nikon,Canon,Pentax and not to exclude Sony) all use a SONY SENSOR. Therefore apart from handling, loyalty to a certain system etc all these cameras should give equal performance the rest depends on your printers dpi and paper, quality wise operation system is the only difference… so its up to the user to decide what he/she likes best in system
im a sony user by the way
cito
5 weeks ago |yea yea we all know about noise levels depending on processor or special chips built in but who is really going to take that many pictures without flash, indoor light or daylight to get noise and who is actually going to zoom or magnify to look for noise not your customers for sure they will look at the whole picture and go OMG I LOVE IT (SATISFACTION)
Lofote
3 months ago |RAW is RAW and by definition it should never remove ANYTHING from what the sensor gives. Really, that is the definition of RAW. So having no support for the smart teleconverter in the RAW is in my opinion correct.
Clyde
3 months ago |I can shoot a 10MP RAW APS-C sized image on the a900. It’s still RAW. That has nothing to do with cropping.
Realistically, there should be numerous formats to chose from regardless of shooting RAW or JPG. And the EVF could easily format them all to full viewing.
A “Classic” size option for 8×10 – 16×20 for traditional frames and letter sized magazine spread. A “NEO” size option for 8×12 – 16×24 and tabloid magazine spread. I’d absolutely love a Square Format. How bout a half frame vertical mode? All available in 1x, 2x, 3x… A couple of buttons saves me tons of post cropping.
I certainly don’t need 24mp for EVERY shoot. Size down in camera and save this monkey some processing time.
Solo
3 months ago |This is definitely one of the best ways to utilize the new electronic viewfinder technology I hope Sony listens to you
Martin
3 months ago |Exactly as Clyde said,
I rarely need 24Mpx image. 12Mpx is faaar enough for majority of my work. And so I can work faster in the RAW processing program, and yes, the buffer will be able to save more images at once. Not a bad idea I think. And I also don’t thnk it is sooo impossible and complicated to do for the programmers. And if they can do it with pixel-binning, many users would be verry happy.
KaiserX
3 months ago |Why couldn’t you just use an Eye-Fi Pro card to wirelessly transfer the image to your laptop?. Lightroom can automatically load that image. You need the Pro card to transfer RAW, but it works just fine. And when you set up Direct transfer you don’t need a network.
SonyA77
3 months ago |That isn’t tethering. Look at tethering on the A700 and you’ll understand why we want it.
Tethering with live-view and focus peaking/magnification would be a killer application for the studio.
KaiserX
3 months ago |The HDMI out gives you your live-view and magnification; with Sony’s monitor you can have peaking.
Clyde
3 months ago |You can’t control the camera though. My setup was overhead boom shooting down on product. Need to control the camera from desktop.
SonyA77
3 months ago |You really need to look at the tethering on the A700 to understand it.
Maveric19
3 months ago |My thoughts on the subject are the same as yours. Why have live view and not be able to use a tethering mode? Sony dropped the ball on that one. I only hope that a FW can rectify that soon!
FK
3 months ago |I worked around that by using a mini-Hdmi -> HDMI cable and a 24″ HP display with my A700 in the studio. It works very well, giving a nice fullHD preview of the image, the only issue is that the crappy mini-Hdmi connections always brake after sevral days of usage, wich can be avoided by fixing it with to the body with zipties to prevent force from the connector. I do not understand yet why all manufacturers use a consumerconnection like Microhdmi on a professional piece of equipment. HD-Component or even HD-SDI would have been several times more durable.
By the way the original cables for the 700 are named VMC-15MHD / VMC-30MHD ( 1,5 and 3m); but I really don’t know if they are the same for the A77! (However on eBay, Amazon etc. you can find 3rd party cables working as well as the originals, that are cheaper and come in even greater lengths.

3 months ago |finally! hope it really improves to shorten time lags on power on and off of the a77. has anyone notice when using minolta lens, the white balance goes a bit yellowish, while the new sony 16-50mm lens (of cors) has a very accurate WB? AF is also a bit off with minolta lenses.
Minolta AF 50mm f/1.7
Minolta AF 28mm f/2.8
Minolta AF 75-300 F4.5-5.6
and on #5, who uses those teleconverters?? the lenses i mentioned are more consumer lenses and those needs to be improved instead. 500mm f/4? are you kidding me? 1/1000000 only have that lens.
fotowolf61
3 months ago |have you ever heard of AF micro adjustments? Read the manual to resolver your AF issues.
sleek
3 months ago |yes and they don’t specify how to setup the lens you have where it would take you a lot of time to experiment with that setting. some guy at dpreview made his own chart for the lenses and the AF micro adjustment settings but that is only by his opinion. unofficial.

3 months ago |It works very well though. I setup my Sigma 50 1.4 with it cleaning up a bit of back focus.
FK
3 months ago |You can’t just use random settings form other lenses.
Micro adjustments have to be made fore one precise lens. Other lenses won’t match a hundred percent even if they come from the same production-run. Remember that these lenses have been used for quite a while already so that naturally differentiate, even if it’s only slightly.
Nikko
3 months ago |and the lens is not even available at this time
who the f will know the response of the lens ?
BTW,,
I tried 16-80za and minolta 70-210 f4
i also think the wb is a bit yelloish
sleek
3 months ago |you are right. the sony branded lenses such as the first 55-200mm has great AF and WB with the A77. i only notice the yellowish tone with minoltas and sigmas, which also are not as sharp is it was in my a700. i think the a77 has really been made for the 16-50mm f2.8. that two is perfect together in every aspect. when mounted with a different lens, its a meh.. ok.. that seems to not utilizing the power of the a77. good choice that i bought the a77 with the 16-50mm lens, since i was having thoughts of saving money and since i have a bunch of minolta glass, kit lens from a700 and a sigma 28-105mm f2.8.

* Ability to view all media in playback (not having to select from still/mp4/AVCHD)
* Ability to use a time delay before HDR shots (drive mode -> 2/10sec self-timer)
* HDR Video… the canon 550d flashed with Magic-lantern can do it so the sony should be more than capable!!
* Within picture effects it would be nice to be able to change the ‘partial colour’ acceptance band, I’m finding its Torrance’s to strict for each colour.
* Open source firmware so the hacking community can improve things at a faster rate… Only need to look at magic-lantern to see what is possible. Open source has made android sales go through the roof Sony should give it a go!

LOL I’m happy to hear they are coming up with a firmware update and I don’t have to sell my new camera! I also had an issue which drove me crazy when editing photos after taking them. After editing the photos when I tried to save the photo, the modified settings from the camera were applied to the save. For example, if in the portrait mode I added +2 to sharpness, when the photo was being saved the photo would sharpen an addition +2 (in 2 different programs)to the finalize edit. It drove me nuts. I had to reset the camera to resolve the issue and make sure to not modify the settings.

If not are they just lazy … And give it to us as a fw upgrade after the release of a99….. if it is even on there??? 3 months ago |Meanwhile, I got my A77 & 2.8/16-50mm and I’m quite happy whith it.
Just 3 things would be great:
- Auto-ISO for manual mode
- noise improvement
- more lenses which are tailored for the A77/65, like the 2.8/16-50
I’m pleased to see that Sony is reacting to the market’s needs by providing fw, but there’s still work to be done.
Apart from that, the A77 really is a great camera – it’s fast (AF and menu-navigation) and it provides tons of detail.

These firmwares solve just tiny things and with 1.04 I still feel as I have just alpha-testing product version.
Martin
3 months ago |What I wanted to say, the 1.03 and 1.04 are just bug fixes… these things should be solved before the camera appeared in the shops.
Matt
3 months ago |And what do you EXPECT a firmware update to fix, other than bugs? Seriously.

3 months ago |Has anyone at Sony actually made a photograph, or worked with a camera? I’ve been with Alpha mount for twenty seven (27) years, since the Maxxum 7000. Only now am I beginning to see the benefits of a company like Nikon which concentrates their design philosophies on one thing (photography) and for one customer (photographers). Nikon’s not worried if their TV’s and Joysticks will compete against XBox.
There is NOTHING North of the North Pole.

3 months ago |Question again. It is a good place here fot it.
I would like very much as a Sony customer give them my feedback. Do they care what they customers do think and do need?
I’m not really wxcited about the 1.05, well, less laggy menu and AF able to really focus surfaces my A300 can, will be nice. I hope it will do it.
BUT I really want – a 12Mpx RAWs (pixel binning would be perfect here)
– better noise handling
– I really want better JPEG image quality (If I wanna aquarel painting, I will paint it by myself)
– CROP remove in video with stabilizer off ?!
– WHY can’t we all just choos whether do we want 60, 50, 24 or 25 fps video?!
– and possibility to shoot 720p ? WHY not? I think these things are quite easy to do. You don’t have to code a brand new modules (as tethered shooting for example), just give an extra option to the users. So the products will be more versatile and more customers will be happy with the same product. If sony is not going taking the way to give out 100 half-finished products every year rather than few good products which will satisfy majority of the customers.
+ Many people do want a tethering (at least via usb cable could be possible to code it not?)
I would really like to hear from Sony what do they plan to do about all these complains and requests from actual customers.
BTW maybe we all should to post the requests here

3 months ago |i’d love to see 720p as well.
if the camera can shoot 1080p at 60fps, surely it can do 720p at 120fps right?
standard 720p with 30fps would be brilliant, good res and lighter files to work with.

3 months ago |I really don’t understand why all of you people don’t send these complaints to Sony directly.
You talk here as if this is a Sony official forum. Gather yourself in a group somewhere on the internet (Facebook or whatever you want) and send emails, letters, or phone calls to Sony.
I agree with most of you, but you’re screaming under the wrong tree.

Hass
3 months ago |You don’t need an advisor.
The comments on these threads can easily be transformed into more “formal” letters. Organize yourselves and do it over one week, this would hit Sony in the head.
Martin
3 months ago |Exactly, can we make a poll with requests on a new firmware?
After few days or a week we will send a formal letter to Sony, as a group of customers requesting their answer as well.
SAR admin, what do you think?

3 months ago |Linux support!!! With the number of firmware updates this would cause a major headache for me. I do not have a ready access to a windows pc. Firmware updates with linux is possible with Nikon 7000. Why not Sony?
As I have just persuaded the wife to get one it may become the deciding factor.

I believe this is very welcoming news for those doing sports and the like.
I personally need this for daily use.
Major updates should come later when Sony gives us a seamless interface.

3 months ago |Simple deal on the flash issues- Since Sony doesn’t address them just sell your A77′s or have them RMA’d as defective back to Sony under the warranty (or try to do that). That will do a lot more than an online poll.

3 months ago |Well, I have just figured out that When I turn mu external flash on, the camera gets absolutely frozen. Only Live wiew works, but nothing else. No button affects anything. Neither shutter release, neither switch-off. Just remove the battery. Yay.

3 months ago |Also, I’m really sad my A65 won’t perform my SD card 32gb 95mbps, I wasted my money, as the camera while have the same writing speed on 45mbps card
Common Sony it’s 2012 almost half way to 2013
Keep up the good work and maybe follow apple philosophy, stop trying to sell 10 years old technology, and you will have the same customer response apple did the last past 5 years!
Thanks for reading this, you guys led the way with you translucent mirror tech, and everybody is following.! Keep up the good work!

Also, there is a number of usability improvements, and other issues and recommendations awaiting to be addressed:

3 months ago |Extra fine JPEG is a MUST in the A5X/A6X series. I can barely understand why it A3X series would not have such setting, but not in the A5X/A6X. It is simply unacceptable to have sub-par JPEG quality in $900 camera!
As a matter of fact, I know at least one person that decided to go with Canon T3i after comparing JPEGs from A65 and T3i. More noise and more JPEG compression were the deciding factors.
James
3 months ago |Sony would increase sales if they allowed an open source firmware. Fact.
Sony didn’t understand that when it came to Beta Max, they didn’t get it with the bogus UMD format on the Play Station Portables, and the god damn TV repair man is at my place every three months to fix the firmware in Sony Bravia’s TVs.
Boycott Sony.

3 months ago |Good! I’ll be installing this, and also waiting for the next update with a more decent JPEG engine. Also, want to be able to use fine and extra fine on A65 when in auto mode!

3 months ago |We have now taken over 50,000 professional photos with our 2 Sony SLT-A77s including several weddings, concerts, and we were also the official photographers on the Rock Legends Cruise… so yes there are professionals that shoot SONY! We were chosen out of thousands of photographers around the world to do the RLC shoot, over 9,000 excellent photos in 4 days. Many of these have been published worldwide and many of the subjects said they were the best photos ever taken of them!
These cameras rock and if you take the time to learn how to use them within their limits. I personally shot over 5,000 no flash concert photos in low light and got a 95% usable result.

2 months ago |Instead of using a camera “within there [Sony's arbitrary] limits”, why not get off on the right foot and buy a camera with no limits? Canon’s lineup offers firmware that’s been hacked, meaning you can get the most of the camera’s true potential.
I’m sick of seeing you post about an over-priced camera like it’s god’s gift to photographers and cinematographers. It. Is. Not.
Unless you can post about unlocking the Sony A77 by hacking the firmware, shut up.
Paying $2,000 for a piece of equipment that is out performed (video wise) by a $1,400, Canon 60D, is criminal.
Booo Sony.
wth
2 months ago |ohhh please! And you Canon fanboys are willing to pay and extra $500 for the 600D over the 550D just for a flappy screen.
STFU LOSER!
The A77 is a good camera.
james
2 months ago |Snore.
It has the potential to be a good camera, but Sony habitually drops the ball on software. They are habitual-ball droppers.
I own the A77 and would gladly shoot a Canon 60D instead (from a video perspective).
Until developers hack the firmware and allow options like Magic Lantern for Canon to be available on the Sony platform; I will permanently have buyers remorse.
I’m not making up facts here. I am stating objectively that for the price, the A77/65 are terrible cameras if your focus is to shoot video.

Puts Limits on the harware technology we rightfully paid for & own, Kinda like the crooks at AT&T charging an extra $30 a month to allow me to take full advantage of the hardware in my iphone that I paid for, It’s my hardware! I paid for it so I should be able to use it how i want… Not have limitations put in by Sony engineers & programmers, They must Unlock/open this firmware now!!!

2 months ago |I was wondering the same. It’s quiet on the rumors about this update.
I’m really excited to see the long list of improvements to this new version 1.0400000001.
Stil waiting for version 2.0 though. Sony has had quite some time for some real improvements (not that the camera isn’t good now).
fotowolf61
2 months ago |True, but Sony release a SLT-A57 with the same processor and UI and improvements even over the A77, like improved focus tracking, a special viewfinder mode for users with eye-glasses etc. (probably a hardware issue). Si I expect this thing to show up in the A77 too.
james
2 weeks ago |Virtual high-five. I can’t agree more to what the A77 owner said. As for the comment regarding the A57, no. You are missing the point. If you buy a camera, the company should stick with it by releasing major software updates. Releasing a new camera is fucking pointless because why should I spend more money on something I don’t need? I just bought the A77, why the F would I want to buy the A57 because they updated some bullshit from the A55?
AHGHG!

3 weeks ago |Dont really care about tethering but my only issue is so much noise at 1600 on my a65,,,, I’ve seen a Nikon user use an iso of 4000 at a wedding and HAD ABSOLUTLY NO NOISE, you say why go so high well it’s to get a higher shutter speed and have the right exposure
