Nikon announces the D7100. Time to see the new A7x!
Today Nikon announced the new 24 megapixel D7100 (spes on Amazon). It’s a nice camera with no Anti Aliasing filter and plenty of new features. It puts again a lot of pressure on the Sony SLT cameras. Sony is going to announce the new A7x this summer and I hope the new generation of Sony sensors will at least catch up with the quality of the new Nikon! And for that they will probably have to get rid of the AA filter too.

I’m a Sony fan, i have a Nex 5n, a77 and for my videos work i use the FS100, can see my work at cajitacreativa.com and at Vimeo all my videos are done with Nex.
But i also like to have great tools, and this Nikon look like a good one. Will be great if the a78 can have similar or even better specs than this D7100, for me one of the most important aspect to improve are the Noise and the Video quality on the a77.
Hope I have not offended anyone.

4 months ago |Doug, I’m pretty sure the A78 will have wifi built in like the NEX6, so you dont have plug in anything like this Nikon 7100, also, I believe new Sony’s sensor will have good ISO performance like the A99.

I don’t think so.

4 months ago |I’m sure this new Niko is very fine indeed. I’m sure it will win all the neighborhood ISO awards and cool your lemonade real nice. And I’m sure the Nikkors have less noticeable focus shift on the APS-C sensor than on the full frame cams. All good for the sporting togs. Toshiba is sure to make headlines with this sensor (which on the D5100 looks practically as good as a99/D600).
Good thing they left out the articulating LCD, otherwise Mamma Sony might get her cookies burned. But Niko has a ways to go on the Live View tech. Unless they’ve addressed the blurry 100% view, compared to others… and still…
DPR… “Another frustration – and again, not a new one – is the lack of ‘live’ aperture control in live view and movie mode. You must set aperture before you enter live view, and aperture changes made with the mode activated don’t actually do anything until you quit out of live view and re-activate it. Unless, that is, you use an older manual focus lens with a mechanical aperture ring…”
Sony is wise, really beginning to distinguish themselves as THE camera for best viewing experience with EVF advantage and sharp articulating LCD system. Starting to really pull away from the pack here.

4 months ago |EDIT: D5200 with new Toshiba sensor looks incredible… not the D5100 as stated above.
Spoon
4 months ago |Nice specs except for fps and buffer in this class. It’s currently set as the Nikon DX flagship with a mere 6 fps at full resolution (5 fps using the highest RAW quality) and a RAW full resolution buffer that is 6-9 shots. Remember how the A77 was slammed with a RAW buffer of about 15 shots?
Bare
4 months ago |It’s sad to see that buffer will fill after 8 images. Two major drawbacks with this camera are fps(it could have at least 8 fps) and to small buffer. Other things are pretty good and price is good at $1200 but that is achieved because it shares most parts with D7000.
Also it’s Toshiba inside so no more Sony sensor in any current Nikon APS-C camera.
John Maverick
4 months ago |I don’t believe it’s been confirmed that this is a Toshiba sensor like the D5200.
Bare
4 months ago |It has same number of pixels and size as sensor in D5200 which is slightly different than Sony in NEX-7.
john
4 months ago |These specs leave room for the long awaited D400 though most say it will always be vaporware.
Steve
4 months ago |In Crop mode the D7100 buffer can handle 14 RAW shots at 7fps before filling. Most people using this body for sports/wildlife would likely use the crop mode. I hope Sony considers a Crop Raw mode as well for the A78. You end of with smaller files, faster processing and more shots before filling buffer. And a cropped view in the EVF.
Zohee35
4 months ago |Even the A57 has a 50% deeper buffer while shooting at full resolution RAW. And while it may be true that many will use the crop mode, I wonder how they will feel about the fact that their effectively used area of the viewfinder will be smaller than 0.5X magnification, considerably smaller than the average entry level OVF.
Sky_walker
4 months ago |Not to mention the fact that framing in a crop mode using OVF is quite a tricky thing.
Kursad Sezgin

4 months ago |Having spent the day shooting macro on an a77, I wouldn’t look at the d7100 twice. Lack of focus peaking and the fixed LCD would be deal breakers for me. Looks like Sony’s keeping my money this round…
Sky_walker
4 months ago |I hope that they at least improved low-light AF performance, cause last time I got a chance to compare these side by side my A77 easily beat D7000 both in single shooting and continuous.
BTW: Did you heard that it shoots only 6 frames in continuous mode till the buffer fills in? Hahahaha, and the people whined so much on how A77 had shallow buffer! I easily can shoot over 4 times as much with Sandisc pro card! Pathetic. And to make it even more fun: It runs maximum speed continuous mode only in crop. Doesn’t even offer full resolution at 7 fps.

Sky_walker
4 months ago |Well, my experience goes bit more deeply that yours, as I quite freely use sensitivities above ISO400. Pretty much it’s as usable as A57 in whole ISO range. If you don’t know how to denoise images correctly than simply scale them down to 16MPx. It makes wonders!
Neo NiGHTS ®
4 months ago |Let’s face it: image-wise the Sonys will always be worse than their Nikon/Pentax counterparts simply because of the translucent mirror.
While Sony doesn’t get rid of it (or make some kind of work-around like mirror flip up/down/side/whatever), it’ll always be behind compared to others.
I think the SLT route simply didn’t go as planned. The main reason was to offer full time PDAF on video and then grab some of the marketshare Canon was (and still is) getting from videographers. But how many people made the switch? How many people left Canon in favor to Sony (because of video, I ask)?
Not to mention that Sony does one thing right, then cripples another.
Let’s what they’ll do about the A7x…
Sky_walker
4 months ago |Solution is simple: Flip-up mode. Sony released 2 patents already for SLT mirror flip-up option.
I hope it’s just a matter of time till they release a camera with it.
Bare
4 months ago |Solution is simple, get back classic mirror and develop much better sensor PDAF than existing for video AF. And you can have EVF even with that.
Sky_walker
4 months ago |Erm… not really. OSPDAF isn’t anywhere close to fully-fledged PDAF. Especially for video where you work in AF-C. So I wouldn’t say it’s something doable in any foreseeable future.
Though I wouldn’t mind new OVF camera as long as it includes at least half of the EVF features. Don’t want to go back to the OVFs like these in D7000. It’s like making a gigantic leap backwards.
Beachrider
4 months ago |SLT is not a dismal failure. It is an issue for diverting light, but different lenses also do this, some to MUCH larger degrees than SLT. Some of the most sanctimonious diatribe focuses on a birthright to ALL the light, but they disregard other ways that those same people dump light.
It does enable video convergence in a way that cannot be done with CDAF-alone. Even with PDAF on-sensor, the PDAF cells must displace photo-cells, so the PDAF areas must be small. Nikon 1 users testify to the exasperating experience of using on-sensor PDAF (it often is tantamount to a CDAF camera).
So it is a polemic, but most people that give the more-advanced Sony DSLRs a week’s work warm up to DSLT and EVF. The loudest noise comes from those that haven’t done this and object on priciple.
stfu

Sky_walker
4 months ago |Beachrider – I’m well aware of that
But the optional mirror flip-up mode is something WITH NO DISADVANTAGES so I can’t convince myself into making any excuses for Sony.
Funny
4 months ago |I believe everyone want to have that opinions too, including Sony. That’s why it is patented. I am sure they have even made the prototype. however, I am guessing there may be some technical difficulties to do that at current technology level or maybe the flip up version will create a bigger issue than the simple slt with only a half stop light loss.
So, I dun see how Sony failed the users if it is technically impossible to make a product that is better than the existing ones.
Spoon
4 months ago |The main goal of the SLT design was >NOT< PDAF with video. I don't know where this myth originates from but it keeps popping up. In fact, none of the original Sony patents mention video to begin with, they mention stills and live view and possible speed and AF benefits.
LR
4 months ago |I think Sony chose the SLT technology because it’s cheaper to produice than a prism (remember Sony is an electronic manufacturer, not originally in photography).
Thus, Sony still kept some visibility on the market without losing too much money. They may have thought it is preferable losing less money and have a small market share than selling more OVF alpha DSLR and losing more money in the end.
By the way, i think EVF has their strenghs, i think they will bring some great features in the a78 evf such as eye recognition tracking.
Vamp898
4 months ago |I changed my 5D3 for an A99 because of the horrible low iso noise of the Canon. Also the viewfinder in the Sony is much better.
Dual sd slot and the flip screen as the in body image stabilisation are dealbraker. Not to mention mfnr which give better high iso result then the Canon ever did. For me also subject tracking was much better at 300mm than the 61 af points of the Canon.
I don’t see any reason to switch back to Canon again. The half f-stop of noise really isn’t a reason. And as said, the mfnr is way more usable than what the Canon give me at high ISO.

When sensor tech reach to a point that can get good result even with slt at 6400, problem will be solved.

If you’re not going to improve my camera then give me credit towards an a78.

4 months ago |The new Nikon 7100 will have a couple of features that are better than the A77, but most are not. The focus system looks on paper to be better, you also get no AA filter, which may or not be an advantage depending on how many artifacts the lack of a AA filter generates. It will certainly have better ISO, but that is no different than the current line of Nikon cameras.
The A77 has high frame rates, better built body, much better live and video modes. So you trade ISO for live view features. Price is about the same.

What I would really appreciate, and I truly believe it would harbour greater brand loyalty, is support for older products.
As it is, my TV is no longer supported (it is supposed to comply with the Freeview HD specification, but does not), my BluRay is no longer supported (I can consistently crash it so that it has to be isolated from the power before being able to operate), and my A580 never received a firmware update.
If Sony would provide a firmware update that enabled manual audio record levels on the SLTs equipped with a mic socket people would flock in their droves to own a Sony SLT.
I’m currently looking for a replacement camcorder. Canon, Panasonic, and Fuji are all on my shortlist. I will not consider Sony at all. And so it will be with all my electronic equipment from now on.

Multiple reasons:
1. cause the cameras they release are never up to expectations compared to competitors
2. to attempt to maintain some market share
3. to attempt to cash in on consumers
4. to lower costs and keep small inventory stock
5. allow them to lower loses if they want to fold up anything if it does not do well
6. no need to employ too many staff to maintain firmware
As sony says, get people to DREAM with them, they MAKE what they can profit from, then they try to make consumers BELIEVE.

4 months ago |The problem at Sony is that, although they have great technicians making great cameras in the main, (the lack of screen movement in the A58 is deplorable), they appear to have no one at all sorting out the firmware. What’s the point having a great camera and sensor when the pictures they produce aren’t the best possible (and how embarrassing is it when other producers get better results out of Sony’s own sensors). Their total lack of response to the calls for a better Jpeg engine in the A65 and A77 has disappointed, and been noted, by many in this forum and this is only the tip of the iceberg, just think how many people out there are unaware of SAR and have nowhere to make their case. Sony really need to up their game and employ someone who knows how to, and is allowed to, write the firmware needed to get the best out of their cameras. We buy cameras to take pictures and if another manufacturers camera at a similar price does it better, consistently, then guess who will sell the most cameras. Sony could also save so much money by producing a good camera, like they did with the A65 and A77, supporting it with quality firmware and letting the production run and run rather than throwing money at producing firmware updates in the shape of new cameras in rapid succession which people will soon get fed up of buying. Sony needs a good stable range which people recognise and trust. Look after your existing users Sony and they will look after you by buying and recommending your cameras, ignore them and…………

Sony, if you lose the fanboys and aren’t gaining market share then where are you going?
Tom S
4 months ago |Agreed – it seems like the attitude towards Sony and their camera division is getting worse. I’m no expert in imaging development/production, but they seem to have a lot of catching up to do. (and some things they do really well!)
1. Selection and Pricing of lenses. More choice needed (both alpha and e-mount). They charge too much for mediocre lenses and outrageous amounts for the good ones. (which admittedly are among the best in the world)
2. Crippling mid-level models of cameras. Why is there no clean HDMI out on the A77 or Nex-7? Seems like a lot of stuff could be done in firmware to make their cameras attractive, but they are too afraid of hurting their sales of the A99 and the video-cameras, like FS100/FS700.
3. Where is the lower level entry FF camera? (or the super high end for that matter)
I know they won’t sell huge volumes of those, but surely they could increase FF sales by a lot of they get something out that costs $700-$1000 less. Higher level would be good to show commitment to the Alpha-mount guys. Not feeling to confident in it’s future right now…
4. Why does the presence of Nex and Alpha seem so spotty in US retail? I know, we all like to buy online, but nothing beats playing with a camera. I have to date not seen a A99 in a store (though I admit I have not gone to a specialty photography store in a while). I have seen the D600,D800 and 5d mk3..
Simon T
4 months ago |Sony don’t know what they are doing that is obvious. A58 too cut down for many and the A77 too noisy for most and getting on a bit. They have nothing in the mid range, charge silly prices for lenses (mostly more expensive than Canikon equivalents)
Sony A99 was so grossly overpriced it caused no impact at all in the market bar probably quite a few A mount users dumping Sony to buy a more affordable Canikon FF body and putting the money saved into a few lenses.
Sony are on the ropes they’re trying to charge a premium when they are the underdog in the market, the only people who are here still are mostly Minolta fans who just want to put their lenses on something (I own 0 Sony lenses all Minolta and Tamron) Why would I put my hard earned cash into a company that is at best clueless, at worst likely to dump A mount anyway.
There is a reason most shoot Canon, they have a clue, Sony don’t

Sony has brought out the plastic-fantastic lenses at moderate prices. The lower cost approach to a58 establishes a higher-bar for a37 and a57 users. The new APS-C sensor (that no one else has, yet) looks to dig-out shadow detail better than the widely-accepted 16 Mp APS-C sensor.

4 months ago |Yes boring but boring and small buffer or not the D7100 is going to sell a lot more than the A77.
Sony could have addressed some complaints with a new A65 with a better sensor and dual control wheels beef it up a bit offer a grip a real mid level body. But nope they want to carry on with the A77. A real missed chance from Sony they’ve effectively given up on SLT (A58 is going to bomb sales wise)
Frank
4 months ago |Sony struggle to sell dSLR/SLT because of bias, it is simple as that.
Read a magazine, the articles are written by CaNikon users. Go to camera stores, the sales people are CaNikon users. Look at the web forums, it’s full of CaNikon users.
This is what Sony are up against, new users simply don’t know their cameras exist!
I’ve just been reading Nikon users commenting on how great the 1.3 crop is, they are blissfully unaware of Sony doing it for years.
I keep saying it, slap a Nikon badge on a Sony camera the sales would be HUGE. It has nothing to do with specifications and everything to do with brand awareness and media/web bias.
Ken
4 months ago |Frank, Sony struggle to sell because they are unable to make their cameras perform as they should. They refuse to support their existing cameras when they know that the pictures they produce are being beaten by their competitors even when using Sony’s own sensors and they continue to produce ever more cameras rather than providing firmware to fix existing cameras so encouraging more sales. Sony has lost it completely. See my previous post (appearance delayed because of waiting for admin moderation)
Frank
4 months ago |I disagree. Canon and Nikon produce some mediocre cameras that give them vast sales, this is purely due to brand awareness.
Sony produced the A580 that pretty much matches the IQ and high ISO of the D7000 and yet it’s not in the hands of a similar number of users.
It has everything to do with media bias and brand awareness.
Simon T
4 months ago |Agree Sony dump on their users they failed to address the awful jpeg engine in the recent models. They don’t understand how to encourage loyalty in users as they don’t care.
Canikon on balance DO make better cameras they are more refined they respond to users needs much better. Sony are trying to sell a dead dog to buyers when they want cameras like the D7100. But they won’t listen they never had.
Had great bodies with the A900 and A700 even the A580 was pretty good but DUMPED the lot for some SLT pipe dream that most users couldn’t care less about.

4 months ago |Here in lies the poblem Frank…the 580 was/is a great camera, but didn’t make it available in Canada and discontinued shortly after it was released. In it’s place they tried to force down our throats slt tech thats appears to be driving away consumers.
Steve
4 months ago |I think you hit the nail on the head.
Today’s cameras are at a cross point, between yesterday’s SRL – DSLR and whatever’s next.
I shoot with Sony’s a850, a camera I got in 2009 and it’s basically an a900 the came out in 2008 and my camera with it’s now five year old technology still does a perfectly good job, so it’s hard to justify replacing it with the a99. Personally I had planned on getting the rumored second higher MP camera that Sony I guess decided not to make.
Everyone’s product, Nikon, Canon, Sony all of them are just making little more than marketing changes just to keep people buying something.
At least Sony went out on a limb with the SLT and that most would agree has been a dud as far as making noticeably better images.
One of these days someone will make a new sensor design that moves the bar whatever that bar is, but it’s not the Nikon D7100, or the Sony a58 or a99.
If today, I decided to jump off the Sony ship and buy something…………I don’t know who’s system I would invest in.

I would love to buy something through this site to help support the work being done or needs to be done, but Sony refuses to make something I’m willing to buy from them right now
Last year I would have gladly purchased both of the new full-frame lenses but now, not know when or even if a new full-frame A-Mount will come out I can’t justify spending nearly 4K on the mount just to ebay later.
But for those will to purchase a new Sony right now, help SAR out by purchasing it through the SAR website and maybe some of the money will go to making the site better.

4 months ago |Stop dreaming! The SLT system will never beat the classic titable mirror! The 2/3 stop loss IS NOT THE ONLY ISSUE!!! The translucent mirror affects the whole I.Q., the spectrum of the visible light. SONY adopted the translucent crap because it costs less than a movable part and now must pay for his decision!

Sony is a big old corporation and the Camera division is just a small part of its operations and management does not worry about it because they could just sell it (to Samsung) if things don’t work out. I still remember what happened to betamax!

4 months ago |This really takes the steam out of Sony’s a58 and even a78 releases…
Nice specs and decent price and I doubt the a78 will be 1195.00 and I doubt it will have this good on an Autofocus system, resolution, jpeg quality, etc… Nikon has been relentless while we are still waiting for Sony… It also looks like Nikon leaves room for the ‘unicorn’ of Nikon crop bodies, the d400…
I think Sony needs to skip the a78 and just jump to the A1X with this release from Nikon. lol….
Frank
4 months ago |Interesting that you think so, I think the D7100 is a disappointment, I expected more.
MrLee
4 months ago |The “more” you refer to would probably be the very wanted D400….
You cant visit a Nikon forum without users begging for this model.
Raj
4 months ago |Frank,
With due respects, I don’t think D7100 is a disappointment. It improves upon a really good D7000 while keeping the price the same.
It’s very similar to what Pentax did with K-5ii but the key difference is Pentax increased the price significantly more than the prior version.
Regardless of what you think, Nikon is going to sell a lot of D7100s.
MrLee
4 months ago |For those of that have mentioned the negative comments that Sony receives from users on here… How can people be happy with Sony right now?? a99 was overpriced and underperforming( especially compared the price and quality of the d600 & d800).. And no plans for a better full-frame in the near future (A1X).. Only crappy NEX. The a77 has crappy image quality, crappy high iso, No clean HDMI output, no tethering, etc, etc, etc, and it was a pretty expensive body when you compare what you get with models like the d7100… No real firmware updates, only lens stuff…
Rx1 is overpriced and very limited, Definitely not for pros.
Sony is so lost right now its unbelievable… If you click on my name you will see every photo I have taken was with one Sony body or another, a350, a580, a580(2), a77 and I want to stick with Sony but they are making it very hard… I have sold my a77 and 3 Alpha lenses in the past 2 weeks and I am looking very hard at models like the d7100 to replace those items… I will hold on to my a580 (The best Sony Alpha Body they have ever made (Excluding no alpha models) – And last OVF) and the bare minimum amount of Mint Minolta Maxxum lenses I own until it dies or they produce something closer to what they are capable of…

4 months ago |Being vocal doesn’t make people “right” or represent a majority.
You need to realize that what you feel is best doesn’t necessarily mean best or even good for Sony. You consider the A580 best but it was one of the if not the worst selling A mount camera Sony has produced. The only sales statistics per model available tell us that the A55 was the best selling APS-C A mount camera (at the end of 2011). The A700 came in second but was on sale for a much longer period. Clicking statistics at Dpreview showed a near all time low interest in the A580 since announcement, outnumbered by the A55 by a factor of almost 10 (!).
Simply put, had Sony stuck to A580 like cameras, there probably wouldn’t be any new cameras to look forward anymore. As much bang for tge buck it delivered and even with the unique LV, those cameras didn’t differentiate themselves enough to be noticed amongst the big known brands. Only a Nikon or Canon badge could have saved it.
Simon T
4 months ago |You have no evidence to support that the A580 was not in production long and bodies are snapped up quicky s/h as people want the camera!
Sony have not had a camera in the top 10 on Amazon uk since the A200 SLT isn’t working people are ignoring it and they only have themselves to blame. My next purchases will be an A900 and A700 s/h because Sony are too dumb to make models people want NOW.
Every time Sony releases a new model it’s worse than the last one (A58 classic example of a failure) A99 is so expensive it’s irrelevant to the FF Market
Zohee35
4 months ago |Actually, I base my post on statistics, you’re stuck with meaningless anecdotes and guessing. I have the A580 and I know what it can’t and can do. But it gathered near zero interest outside loyal A mount users. But from the day of announcement until after the review, the A55 gathered up to 10 times more interest and also kept is its value much better where the A580 already started dropping in price.
MrLee
4 months ago |The a55 and a580 came out at the same time and I NEVER saw one ad for the 580, Only the a55.. Why ? to make more money and force people to go the slt route in the future… If they didnt make the a55 And force them on consumers, or only stock the a55 in ‘best buys’ and such, all of the sales would have been for the a580 with the same sensor! If Sony would have never lost their way and continued to produce amazing cameras like the a580, Sony would have a MUCH larger market share by now… Thanks for showing you dont know what you are talking about…
Funny
4 months ago |So you are saying that a company spent all their time and money to release 2 products to the market, but they only want one of them to sell. I dun get that theory at all.
A580 was a good camera, I almost got one myself. It might be the best mid class camera back then. however, when compare to nowadays camera, it’s just a little outdated. It can still capture great pictures though.

4 months ago |Correct Sony spent all their marketing money on the SLT models and NOT the A580 I never once saw an advert for that model it was SLT all the way ad spending wise.
It was almost as if Sony did not even want to release it, and was desperate to get rid of their OVF models as fast as possible. Problem is the SLT ones are not exactly setting the world on fire either with declining sales and struggling v rivals it is not hard to see Sony abandon A mount at some point.
Meanwhile Canikon release OVF models (not perfect some warts) but “people want them” and buy them. Thus we can only conclude that Sony’s ill fated SLT experiment has been a failure overall.
It didn’t have to be, if the A99 was priced at yes pleas levels (ie cheaper than the D600 or Canon 6d) things might be different. But Sony are trying to charge more for less with the SLT range. The A58 is just another irrelevant model that will do badly on sales.
Sony are on a road to destruction in the SLR market and it’s their own doing.

4 months ago |And the a580 is a 2 year older model and it will still SPANK the a77 and at high iso it will SPANK it twice… Once on each cheek, lol…
So… since you wanted mr to explain… Cameras are like computers… every new release should give you a little better (At least) results… With the a77 you waited 2 more years, paid twice as much, and got half the qualiy of image of the a77… If that dont “Suck” I dont know what does for you…

Canikon users are laughing at Sony this is their best shot a plastic mount SLT camera that will be forgotten very quickly indeed. Nobody is talking about the A99 either Sony messed up in an epic way.
AG
4 months ago |Yes a sad turn of events.

4 months ago |Yeah, Sony is nobody, so nobody will talks about nobody’s product. When Nikon removes the AA filter, everybody says that’s a home run. But when Pentax did that with the K-5 IIs, the forum was silent(you know which forum I’m referring to). Sure some congratulate Pentax, but not as positive as the Nikon D7100.
Simon T
4 months ago |Nobody shoots Pentax they have some nice ideas but the lens range is small and overpriced so the brand suffers badly as Ricoh don’t know how to manage it properly. They sell the bodies cheap enough K5II is a nice camera but it’s not enough really.
Sony are going the way of Pentax badly priced, small range, overpricing lenses they’ll probably leave the DSLR market in a few years just leaving Canikon to dominate all around them
Steve
4 months ago |I’m likely going to be trashed by saying this but I’m guessing that Sony is a company in sort of free-fall.
Their stock price has gone from an average close of about 14.40 this week from a year ago high of 36.78, some weeks up and some lower.
Although Sony has recently reported lower losses, the losses have continued.
I read that Sony is a top-down management structure, that maybe having difficulty focusing the needed resources to product within division’s like the A-Mount that have little chance of gaining any market share at a profit margin acceptable to management and shareholders.
Sony will be concentrating on supplying products to the market that are proven profit makers like NEX and maybe the E-Mount lenses and not spend resources battling entrenched market leaders like a Canon or Nikon for a shrinking product category.
Zohee35
4 months ago |You might be taken seriously if you could give any insight on profit margins on SLT’s. But you can’t.
GreenLens
4 months ago |Indeed all this boils down to judgement and belief. I too think that the company may be on its way out. Currently the imaging department enjoys a relative freedom of design and research making one wonderful device after another. Meanwhile their managers are busy loosing money in the most efficient way. As a photographer, I am happy I am a Minolta, Konica and Sony user! Hope their gear will serve me well.

4 months ago |I feel that in the next 2-3 years all sensor might be rid of anti-aliasing filter and have an inbody feature/software to calibrate the moire etc. Adobe PSCS7 & LR6 might have a new feature to filter these flaws of not having an anti-aliasing filter. Im still happy moving to Sony for the last 2 years – its because of its feature pack products. Since bodies are in a very fast paced im going to invest on good glass… still a shame regarding the NEX line are rather limited. but things might change. im having high hopes for Sony regarding lens for the NEX. NEX7r without anti-aliasing filter sounds really good.

A $1195 camera that will smash on the a78… I bet… For less… I bet…
I will bet anything the a78 will not have the IQ of this camera and will be 1595.00 or more… More of the “Less for More” mentality Sony has been in Lately starting with the a99 and RX1.. Heck even the a77 looking back… I will hold onto my a580 and my 5 legacy Minolta lenses just incase Sony produces a decent full-frame camera sometime between now and 2016…
