7 months ago |Sony Store USA has had them in stock for a week. Early sample pics this week had me canceling my pre-order from NYC and waiting for the Zeiss 12mm this spring or summer.

7 months ago |That much money? And, not very bright? No thanks ! will continue with my 16mm/f2.8 prime (12mm with the 0.75x magnification adapter)
Vlad
7 months ago |I am sure we’ll be able to buy it a bit cheaper in a couple of months. I tried the 16mm with both converters and at least for me, they are just bad.

7 months ago |Price is not bad actually considering the Panasonic 7-14mm is $40 more (Amazon prices). Then again, optical quality the Pany is excellent and it has a shorter FL with a much more bulbous front element (albeit similar FoV). This one is unknown.
Actually, Sony didn’t have to put OSS in a lens this wide (you can probably hand hold it down to 1/10s), which could’ve reduce the price a bit.

7 months ago |Saw it last week at Inter BEE, unfortunately they didn’t let me take photos with it. Feels great like the other nex lenses and it is really light and small. Quite amazing actually, especially considering it has OSS.

7 months ago |Was also at InterBEE but did not see it. Missed it at the Sony exhibit. The 16-50mm pancake zoom is lightweight and great. Handles perhaps 80% of shooting conditions. I want wide and bright as well, but this lens does not offer the brightness. And for the price? The money can be better spent. I have the 16mm/f2.8 prime with 0.75x magnification adaptor (as mentioned above) for 12mm at f2.8. With that I just purchased SLR Magic’s 35mm/f1.7 CINE lens with E-mount which is also very does a pretty good job. However, it’s not all that wide. I am looking forward to their 23mm/f1.4 release in February. I may consider this 10-18mm if it comes down in price, but then, with f4? Not at this point in time.

7 months ago |f/4 is actually quite decent for an uwa zoom. IIRC, on APS-C the only uwa zoom with a faster aperture is the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8.
Vlad
7 months ago |As Seeky said, it’s not that slow for a UWA and then you have it stabilized. But yes, the price is too high currently. I can get a Tokina 11-16 with the LAEA1 adapter for less. Or the Sigma 8-16 and the adapter for the same price.

7 months ago |Thanks for that additional input. I am not all that knowledgeable on lens structures and limitations. I did not realize it is difficult to get brighter than that on uwa (ultra wide angle?) lenses. I was thinking in terms the 16mm f2.8 I already own. But still, the price…. when considering that, I can buy a second NEX-6 body and avoid lens swapping. cheers…

7 months ago |Why would you NEED a wider aperture for?
Low light? It has OSS and all Nex cameras have great low light abilities anyway (Yes, even Nex-7)
Tiny DOF? Nope, wouldn’t make any difference whatsoever.
Personally, I use the 16/2.8 with x.75 adaper too, but I guess this lens will be of much higher image quality.
tokyojerry
7 months ago |Thanks for input. Yes, low light is exactly the thought I had in mind. For example when in low light scenario conditions… like in a dimly lit Izakaya (Japanese style pub) and you have people sitting across a table from you, I am think I want wide and I want bright. Or, at a birthday party, or special lighting in a wedding chapel. But then, if this OSS technology compensates that well in lieu of not having such a bright aperture, that may work. Actually, I have done some fairly decent shots in dark conditions with just the existing kit lens 16-50mm/f3.5. I reckon in addition to the OSS function that can also be attributed to the BSI technology Sony employs in their sensors and the added fact NEX is mirrorless. (= not even translucent). Here are a couple shots I took of the renovated Tokyo Station building just last night using the NEX-6 with 16-50mm:

7 months ago |BTW, why would you not just stick with the 16mm/12mm (with 0.75) f2.8? True, it is a prime lens and not a zoom, but if you consider, you have two focal lengths which fall in between 10-18mm and with brighter aperture. Besides, it costs you nothing.

7 months ago |Quality, 16/2.8 lenses are usually really bad lenses. Some are good, but most are not. Mine is definitely not
The center is OK but the corners are just crap.
True that one doesn’t always need mindblowingly sharp corners on an ultra wide angle lens, but still, 16/2.8 is REALLY bad. OK for snapshots, OK for some non-serious work, definitely NOT OK for most things serious. However, I also have a 5D with 17-35/2,8-4 Sigma which is my “serious” UWA setup right now. And it costs me about the same as the new Sony lens.
So, I might actually just skip this lens too. But if I need to get some serious UWA lens for my Nex setup, this is the one I’ll get. I’ll keep the 16/2.8+adapter just for fun.

7 months ago |I see. Then, maybe I should (might) sell my on Yahoo auction and just spring for the 10-18 mm as alternative. No 0.75x attachments, AF, and more flexibility, albeit a more expensive price tag. In Japan, cheapest thus far…. ¥71,800. (approx $909 USD @ 79=1) But… if the lens is that good, maybe I need to bite the bullet and get it. Then, alternatively, might be better to put out that sort of money with a full frame / alpha lens which I can adapt to NEX with LA-EA2 adapter, which I have. Thanks for the insight. Appreciate it.

7 months ago |Just think about what you’ll use it for. If 16/2,8+adapter is good enough for you(it is for me for most cases), that means you’re spending 900$ for extra quality for maybe what… ten uses for a year? Maybe you can rent a lens for that duration?
I thought to myself, if I’m definitely going to need that extra quality on UWA shots, then I might just bring a larger camera to the occation. So, why not just rent a 5dm2 with 16-35 for a few days when you need it?
If you’re going to constantly need that quality UWA, yes, then you might just have to actually buy one.
Btw, 16/2.8 with adapter also has AF.

7 months ago |F4 is a good compromise on price and size for an ultra wide.

7 months ago |The build quality on this lens is superb. The plasic lens hood is lighter than metal, but it serves its purpose. Plastic will also absorb more shock, in case the poor thing ever dives to the ground. The lens itself does not look oversized on an NEX body. I agree that the price could be lower. Perhaps around 650 USD? For the 35/1.8, something closer to 350-400 for sure.

7 months ago |B&H shipped mine today, despite the fact that it still shows as “New item, available for pre-order” on their site. Suggests that the lens is either fantastically popular, or supplies are very limited, and they are just filling pre-orders as limited supplies trickle in.
And YES, Sony DID have to make this an OSS lens… seems like ALL you guys & gals forget that NEX isn’t just stills cameras, NEX ***is*** VIDEO: VG10, 20, 30, VG900, FS100, FS700 and EA50 so far… and how many NEX stills cameras are there????
On a FS700, the un-stabilized 16mm pancake is utterly useless handheld. And no, not everyone uses these things as cine cams on tripods / dollies / steady-suits.
