Sony A55 get’s hacked!
The Hacker “someone” released the first Sony A55 hack! More info at EosHD forum: “The patcher app is able to overcome the A55 firmware encryption and is the basis for adding bitrate patches and new menu options later on. The NEX 5 patcher I also believe is coming later.”
If the hacker managed to hack the A55 than I am sure he will soon do it with the A65 and A77 too. And maybe also with the future A99!

10 months ago |No. The presented firmware is for a55 only. For a33 and nexes it shuold be a bit different. It will not take long to make it for A33. Not sure for nexes since the have slightly different structure.

10 months ago |Might be interesting, given how Sony abandoned us A55 users firmware wise (like they do for just about every just model, better a new one than patch up what’s out it seems). But somehow I don’t believe this “hack”.

10 months ago |What don’t you believe? I mean a custom firmware with real changes hasn’t been made, things are still progressive but you can hit up the website and see that he’s put in a lot of time. He’s somehow gotten through encryption and has been able to alter the firmware, pass firmware check with sony’s own software, and still have a functioning camera. It’s just a matter of switching up the features now.

Still, fw “hacking” in sony cameras has never happened, and somehow there comes the news, and naming names for exactly the camera I own. Sounds weird, and I prefer to sit and wait. But, as I said, any news is good news for any sony camera that gets “jailbreaked” somehow, I guess.

10 months ago |It hasn’t happened because nobody has got their hands on the encryption keys. Perhaps this guy has and if so, the code is wide open to be modified.
You can bet that Sony will update the keys in future models though.

Custom firmwares can be the holy grail or bricking hell, and anything in between. I will follow your endeavor, with a bit of hope, and lots of jaded caution, as inappropriate as it sounds. I did read. He apparently bricked the camera during the endeavor, and was able to luckily restore it. And it seems the actual custom firmware is just a test, a landmark in itself nonetheless. Just saying “I did it”. The question is, what comes next.

10 months ago |Funny how in all this time I’ve never had a overheating shutdown, not in video mode (but seriously, how long do you need to shoot in one single take?), not in stills mode. I did have a warning once, and that was while shooting lots of pictures, and I mean lots, if I remember I was on the second battery, in the summer heat, under the sun. Waited a couple of minutes and kept on shooting.

10 months ago |I’m pretty sure it’s all firmware. The vg10 was released without peaking and it was added later via firmware. Doesn’t mean it isn’t dependent upon some piece of hardware but from what i’ve read it doesn’t seem so.

IMHO missing interesting “software only” functions :
- programme shifting : in P mode ability to shift aperture/shift without changing exposure
- adjustable iso auto range
- iso auto in Manual mode : you set aperture and speed, and the program set the iso
- enlarge autobracketing : 2/3 IL is ridiculous in Raw. -2,0,+2 seems more rational

10 months ago |I need this for an NEX-7! These patches need to be built and developed on the top end cameras first and then down, not the other away around. People that normally pay for higher end products are more easily motivated and capable of donations, just common sense! I’m donating 50 bucks now! First time I donate for anything of this kind, but SURELY worth the work for the developer and the money already spent on my NEX-7! Thanks and hope to see it happen soon:)

But right now, I think there is more lower and mid end cameras in the world than your high end camera, and since he/she does have a SLT-A55, he/she is beggining with what he/she does have.

Amazed there are so many neutral and even negative comments here.
For A55 owners this will benefit you even if you never use the firmware: resale price and/or second lease of life when you upgrade and are less bothered about bricking. I really hope the older Alphas all get hacked eventually.
FWIW, just try buying a secondhand hackable GH and see what I mean about resale price

10 months ago |The issue I have is that someone1.00 needs more bodies before he continues his hacking work. But why can’t he/she continue with the a55 hack in the meantime? Changing the menu slightly is something that can probably be done in a hex editor… programming new features on compiled firmware code is likely much harder!!
In addition, how is anyone supposed to get the donations/bodies to him if he wants to remain anon? no one even knows which country he lives in (but I guess Russia)…

What we need is an HDMI display mode that
1. just shows whatever the camera sensor is seeing (uncompressed, no recording needed),
2. leaves no graphics whatsoever on the screen,
3. allows you to adjust the output format (720p24, 1080p30, 1080i60, etc.)
4. fills the HDMI screen full of picture (no black bars).
This way we can use new inexpensive HDMI input boxes to get amazing quality high-bitrate video into our PCs and Macs. Others use that for cinematography, but I need it for signal processing purposes…..

10 months ago |because that camera is new, and probably, the hacker doesn’t have one since it’s still a bit pricey or whatever reason. Send him/her a SLT-A57 and for sure he/she will try to hack it.

1. Ability to display spirit level and histogram at the same time.
2. User defined max ISO for AutoISO.
3. Make the useless “Zoom” button programmable.
4. No additional cropping when recording video.

10 hours ago |If someone 1.00 can rewrite the firmware to remove the on screen display during live view you can use the ninja 2 by Atomos to record uncompressed video.
